Date: 8th Aug 17

Time: 11 am to 2.00 pm and 12 pm to 3 pm

Target Group: Students from two schools

Introduction and Science of Climate Change, Its Cause and Impacts

The session started with a brief introduction of the session and about the initiative of MP

CDMA to create awareness about the climate change in the local context through the

campaign of Climate Caravan – Sab

Sath Chalen and its purpose to build a

public understanding about the

climate change and actions for

mitigation of greenhouse gases. It is

followed by an interactive discussion

describing the basic science of climate

change like the difference between

climate and weather of a place or a

region, greenhouse effect and global

warming, greenhouse gases and the natural and anthropogenic sources of greenhouse

gases. Also discussed with the students the activities responsible for the emissions of

greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide with respect to the production and use of energy,

waste generation and production of methane, use of fossil fuel formed over a longer period

of time as petroleum for transportation and emission of carbon dioxide. Make them

understood that water is going to be impact in many ways with respect to its availability for

human consumption, agriculture, etc due to the effect of climate change altering the

precipitation patterns, increasing temperature and increasing demand for water.

Also discussed with the students the

impact of climate change in the local

context like how it is going to affect

the local climatic context in the city of

Bhopal interms of increasing

temperature, shorten winters,

changing rainfall patterns. They were

made understand the connection

between the effects of climate

change with the health and vector

borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, malaria, etc due to increasingly favourable

conditions for the breading of mosquitos.

13 | P a g e

Students were also explained about the state level impacts of climate change. The

agriculture, biodiversity, plants, animals and pollinators which will get impacted or affected

due to the climate change in Madhya Pradesh which is a forested state.

Students were quite interactive and were asking many questions and responding to the

questions being posed to them during this discussion.

Climate Caravan – Sab Sath Chalen Exhibition

An exhibition of Climate Caravan – Sab

Sath Chalen campaign was also put up

for the students at the Habibganj

railway station. Students were divided

into groups and given different

themes energy, waste, transportation

and water. They were asked to go

through the exhibition standees on

science of climate change and sources

of greenhouse gases and the activities responsible for the emission of GHGs. They were

asked to identify the activities which are increasing our carbon footprint and the activities

which can increase out handprint towards reducing the GHGs emissions under each sub-

theme. The resource person discussed and explained the concept of carbon footprint and

handprint connecting them with our day to day activities and the lifestyle choices we make

especially as a student and as an individual.

Climate Action Activity – Group work

The students were divided into groups

of 6-8 students depending on the

strength of the schools, adhering to

the 4 themes under the programme,

namely, water, electricity, waste and

transportation.

Each group was asked to discuss in their group about the theme given to them. They were

told to discuss and identify any product or process under their theme and map the steps of

its production using lifecycle analysis approach of that product or process from its source to

final disposal or start of the process to the end of the process throughout its lifecycle.

14 | P a g e

They were asked to draw the same on

a cart paper sowing all the stages of

the product manufacturing or the

process. They then identified all the

stages where any type of GHG is

emitted and also identify which GHG is

this from the commonly known GHGs

(CO2, CH4, N2O, CFC). They then

discussed the alternative or solution

that can be adopted to mitigate or

minimize the emission of that GHG in the production of that product or process. It was again

drawn on the chart paper to show or represent the solution or alternative handprint option.

Leading questions for the discussion

1. Electricity - What are the sources of electricity, how it is produced, use of fossil fuel

like coal, uses of electricity, alternative sources like renewables, etc?

2. Waste - Trace the lifecycle of 1-2 items in your garbage from where it was produced

to where it goes after you use it (Tetrapak/batteries/plastic bag, vegetable peels,

notebook, etc).

3. Water - Sources of water, how does it reach our homes (treatment, supply), different

types of uses, impact of groundwater depletion due to borewells, pipelines/vehicles

to transport water, pumping, disposal of sewage after uses of water, etc.

4. Transportation - How do you travel? What forms of fuel it uses? Where does fuel

come from? The material used in manufacturing, mining for extraction of raw

material, etc.

Students again made a presentation in group to the other students and explained on the

following points under their give themes.

The product or process selected

and how the product is made or

process of implemented.

What are the stages where GHG is

emitted? Which GHGs are emitted?

How the emission of the GHG in

that process of product making can

be reduced?

This was with reference to the themes

given to them, that is, water, electricity, waste and transportation. Briefly it was discussed

to relate these activities with the lifestyle of the students and the things they do in their day

to day life. They were able to relate the solutions they suggested with their own activities

15 | P a g e

and choices they make and making suggestions which they can take up like using natural

light or use of bicycle and buses for travelling to schools, etc.

Quiz – on Climate Change with respect to Madhya Pradesh

A short quiz on climate change was conducted by MPCDMA with the students to understand

what they gathered from the session. Small token prizes were also distributed to those who

gave correct answers for the quiz questions. These questions were on the science of climate

change, climate change and its relevance to the state and personal actions towards GHGs

reductions.

Material Distribution

Each student was given a kit of the Climate Caravan – Sab Sath Chalen exhibition containing

a set of the six posters to carry with them and read later.
