Activity Report 2019-20 1 Activity Report from 1 st April,2019 to 31 st March,2020 On 28 April 2019 Oriens goes to Jakrem by two busses for picnic. On 5 June 2019 Second Semester Exams start On 4 April 2019 an extension lecture was given by Prof. A.K. Nongkynrih from NEHU, Shillong, on the topic “Catholic Church in Modernizing World and Societies of Northeast India”. On 11 May 2019 College Day was held. Fr. Athnas Kerketta MSFS was the Chief Guest On 17 June 2019 a Three-Day Symposium on “Rediscovering the Spiritual Dimension of Pastoral Ministry” was held at Oriens to mark its Ruby Jubilee. Besides the staff and students of the college, Bishops, Major Superiors and select past pupils participate in it.

Activity Report from 1st April,2019 to 31st March,2020

On 5 June 2019 Second Semester Exams start

On 4 April 2019 an extension lecture was given by Prof. A.K. Nongkynrih from NEHU,

Shillong, on the topic “Catholic Church in Modernizing World and Societies of Northeast

India”.

On 11 May 2019 College Day was held. Fr. Athnas Kerketta MSFS was the Chief Guest

On 17 June 2019 a Three-Day Symposium on “Rediscovering the Spiritual Dimension of

Pastoral Ministry” was held at Oriens to mark its Ruby Jubilee. Besides the staff and students of

the college, Bishops, Major Superiors and select past pupils participate in it.

On 20 June 2019 Summer Vacation begins after the completion of the academic year 2018-2019.

On 25 July 2019 Students return after their summer vacation.

On 1 Aug. 2019 New Academic Year 2019-2020 inaugurated with solemn mass officiated by

Bishop Albert Hemrom from Dibrugarh and Archbishop Dominic Jala SDB as the Chief Guest

Bishop Albert gave a lecture on the topic, “Assessing the Needs and Serving Adivasi

Community in the Northeast”. 45 new students join the College.

On 10th August, 2019: Freshers’ Day celebrated with variety entertainment.

Students in groups of twos and threes are assigned to 11 Cultural Centres and 16 villages to

carry out social, cultural, educational, religious and charitable activities on Sundays through-

out the year. The Students according to their language and tribal groups to which they belong,

reach out to the children, the youth, the women, the sick and the families, by teaching, animating

and taking up social welfare programmes. The Cultural Groups are: Bodo, Hindi, Adivasi, Garo,

Nagas, Kukis, Mizo, Tripuri, Zou, and Khasi. The villages selected are: Mawprem, Madanryting,

Nongmynsong, Jyntah, Umphyrnai, Lamlyer, Mawmuthoh, Maw-u-Sam, Mareng, Mawphlang,

Mawlein, Umiam, Nongsder, Mawpun, Sumer, Umsaw and Mother Teresa Leprosorium at

Nongpoh, Sneha Bhavan at Shillong and Santi Bhavan at Nongthymai.

On 22nd August, 2019: Students go for a picnic.

On 24th August, 2019: A community meeting of the Students and Staff was held to evaluate the

programmes and activities of the College, prior to the General Body Meeting.

On 30th August, 2019: A book titled, “Spirituality in Pastoral Ministry” containing the Papers

presented at the Oriens Symposium conducted from July 17-19 was published.

On 2nd September, 2019, The General Body Meeting of the Oriens Theological College Society

is held.

On 5th September, 2019, Teachers’ Day was celebrated.

On 13th September, 2019, Fr. Joyee K Vellattuakara joins the College as its new Terasurer

On 16th September, 2019, Mid- Semester Examination begin

On 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti and Swatch Bharat Day Observed

On 3rd October,2019, Oriens community Day was held with a Cultural evening.

On 7th October, 2019: Final Examinations for the fourth Year students begin.

On 11th October, 2019: The College mourns the demise of its Ex-President, Archbishop Dominic

Jala SDB.

On 15th October, 2019: Farewell given to the Fourth Year Students: Scholarships given out.

On 19th October, 2019: Students organize Fund Raising Auction for the Social Welfare

Programmes. The money collected is handed over to the Charitable wing of the Archdiocese of

Shillong.

On 29th October, 2019: The College held an animation programme with the local community of

Motsyiar

On 30th October, 2019: Three students of the College take part in the National Seminar held at

Jorhat.

On 7th November, 2019: Literary and cultural competitions conducted.

On 8th November, 2019: Inter-college Basket Ball match conducted.

On 12th November, 2019: Christian Cardinal Bo SDB, the President of Federation of Asian

Bishops’ Conference paid a visit to the College.

On 14th November, 2019: The 75th Birthday of Emeritus Prof. Rev. Fr. Thomas Manjaly

observed.

On 26th November, 2019: A book titled, “Hermeneutics” by Fr. Thomas Manjaly is published by

the College.

On 1st December, 2019: Archbishop John Moolachira, the New President of the College paid an

official visit of the College.

On 2nd December, 2019: Semester Examinations begin

On 8th December, 2019: Winter vacation begins.

On 10th February, 2020: The College re-opens after the winter vacation.

On 3rd March, 2020: Archbishop John Moolachira, the President of the College interacted with

the students and the Staff:

On 3rd March, 2020: The work of the Extension of the Library, by building another floor to the

existing structure begins.

On 4th March, 2020: Annual Extension Lecture given by Dr. Christina Diengdoh.

On the 10th March, 2020: A work for securing an alternate source of water by digging an open

well at a probable source of water in the compound begins.

On 15th March 2020: Scooty is bought for the community.

Brothers visited different centers to educate people about Corona Virus Prevention and Personal

Hygiene.

18 March 2020: Replacement of water Pipeline and Motor

17 March 2020: Lockdown by State Government of Meghalaya to fight against COVID-19

22 March 2020: One day’s Janata curfew

Following the national lockdown 67 students are stranded. All are accommodated in the college.

22 March 2020: College joins the nation in appreciation of Doctors, nurses and health-workers

formidable work to contain COVID-19.

30 March 2020: College staff volunteers to help counselling the people in distress over the

phone.
