PRAYER Use this prayer as a guide, either after talking about the Bible Story or sometime before bed tonight: “Dear God, it’s so comforting to know that You already know what we’re afraid of. You know when we face situations that we’re scared of. And we know that You’re there to help us face those fears. Remind us that You’re with us, especially when we don’t know what will happen next. Remind us that You can help us face anything. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.” MEMORY VERSE "Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see." WHAT YOU NEED: Play-Doh, or markers and paper WHAT YOU DO: Pick one person to go first. Ask that person to think of something someone might be afraid of (spiders, storms, cockroaches, snakes, roller coasters), and then either mold it out of Play-Doh or draw it on paper. Everyone else will try to guess what’s being created. The first person to guess correctly gets to be the next person to think of a scary thing for everyone else to guess. Wrap up the game with a quick conversation about fears. Share some of your own fears, and ask your family to share theirs as well. Then talk about how even though we can’t see God, we know He will give us the strength and courage to face our fears. Talk about the Bible story: o In the story, God told Ananias to go find Saul. Why was Ananias afraid to do that? (Saul had been arresting people who believed in Jesus) o When Ananias found Saul, he placed his hands on Saul. What happened next? (Something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again) o What did Saul do as soon as he could see again? (He got baptized) o Who helped Saul get connected with the disciples and other believers to share the story of Jesus? Tips For Parents: Helping Your Child With Their Fears

When you notice your child is afraid, you should encourage him or her to share their feelings with you. Get down at your child’s eye level and say with sincerity, “Tell me how you’re feeling; I want to know how I can help you.”

Instead of shame or irritation, lend a kind, listening, and caring ear. As James writes, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” James 1:19. You might be able to force a child to do something, but you cannot force a child to overcome fear. On the other hand, just talking about a fear can help your child move past it.

Do provide gentle support and encouragement as you approach the feared object or situation with your child. Be consistent and uncomplaining as you give them time to grow. Take the time to listen, acknowledge their fear and make sure your child feels heard. Use active listening skills: Nod your head, repeat back to them what they said, make eye contact, sit quietly.

If you don’t patiently help your son or daughter walk through the fear barriers of life, the phobia is likely to continue to affect your child.

Most important, always encourage your son or daughter to tell God how they feel. Teach them to remember that they are never alone because their good and faithful Father is always near. Pray with them about their fear and help them learn how to take any concern to Jesus. And then go beyond empathy. Talk about how you’re learning to handle your fears with faith. Tell them that you can face things that scare you because you know you’re not alone. Jesus has promised to be with you through every good or scary thing you’ll ever face. It’s good that your kids have you, but ultimately they will need more than what you can give. This is a great moment to teach them that we were never meant to live apart from the God who made us. Encourage them to believe that if Jesus doesn’t abandon their parents in their struggles, then they can trust him not to abandon them either.

ELEMENTARY ART CHALLENGE

Create your own unique version of our HOC5 Kids! logo to be shown on our Sunday YouTube lesson.

Kids can choose the color and style and use any artistic medium they like. Pencil, crayons, watercolor, glitter glue, a whiteboard, play dough, sidewalk chalk, toothpicks, legos, flower petals …….anything goes.

Just make sure it contains the 2 words: HOC5 Kids!

Decorate it any way. Dinosaurs, basketball, unicorns, outdoorsy, sparkly, draw your friends and family, a cross, or just have the words. Kids can create something all by themselves or the whole family can join in. It’s all good, so just have fun with it.

Take a photo of your finished project and text to Stacy @ 650-492-0043 or email [email protected].

No rush, we will continue to feature your creations through the summer.

We will show some each week on our video bible lesson.

No names on the artwork page, but we will include your first name when we feature your creation in the episode.
