Activities on the NaesbycentreWe consider our many activities as some of the most important of ourcentre, and are constantly trying to develop our offers. We wish for ouroffers to be fun, exiting and challenging for all scouts, but we also wantthe activities to inspire to contemplation and reflection. Therefore youshould take your hour, exploring the book - and consider what you wantto achieve with the activities when you are doing them with your scouts. The activities are all marked with symbols as information or .The symbols will explain, what we think, is the primary purpose for theactivity. You can use the symbols as a guiding line, when you arechoosing amongst all of the activities.

We wish that the activities you arechoosing are linked in a way, so thatthe experience for the whole camp isgreater. That is why our activities arebuild up around a series of projects. For instance you can choose theViking project - "Erik the Red" orexperimenting with the marvellousworld of natural science in theexperimental tent - see page 12-16.Many of the projects also containsdifferent games and stories forreading aloud, which will, hopefullycontribute to the overall experience.A summer camp gives you anextraordinary opportunity to work

with the same thing for a longer period of hour, and therefore we hopethat you will cease it, and involve you deeper in the projects. For all of the activities it applies, that they are meant for groups ofapproximately 10 contestants. Bigger groups than this can with greatadvantage choose more than one activity per period.

Projects and activitiesThe activities are, as mentioned build up around a series of projects - seepage 12-16. From home you'll choose which projects you want to beinvolved in and which activities it must contain. To work with a projectdemands, that you do it for at least 3 activity periods, which means 3mornings, 3 afternoons or a whole day. Therefore you must choose 3activities within the project activities. When you arrive to the centre, youwill get a description of the project, some background materials andpossibly stories for reading aloud.A project is build up by a number of different activities, where most ofthe activities are box-activities. That means that you will get an ideacard, which will describe the activity, along with a box of materials. Therefore it is up to you, to run the activity and returning the box withleftover materials, when you are done. For the activities containingfoods, it is you responsibility to collect the ingredients.Historic workshopsSome of the activities are created as historic workshops. That goes forThe Smithy, Horn, Viking Jewellery, Tanner wool and cooking from themiddle age. In the historic workshops, there will be a staff member incharge of running the activity, because we wish to tell you more thanthere can be written on an idea card. In the same hour it ensures that thescouts will get a good experience while doing it. Not all of the workshopsare offered at each summer camp, so talk to your staff leader about whatis offered at your camp.Choosing activitiesA month or two before the camp you will be send a list, on which youmust write all your wishes regarding projects, sub activities and otheractivities. One list is for you to hold on to, the other you must send to thestaff leader. The responsible for activities will coordinate the activities ina way so that most groups gets what they assign for.We recommend that you, the day before the assigned activity, prepareyourself by looking over the idea card. If you assess that you can't do allof the activities, it is important, that you tell the responsible for activitiesso, so that we don't prepare the activity for you for no reason.

Activity symbolsSubdivision of age and purposeBy every activity it's noted, how old we think you should be at least, tobe able to do the activity. This is meant to be a guide line, but youngerchildren will often still be able to solve the activity; possibly just withmore help from you. Furthermore every activity is marked with symbols, illustrating what we think the activity especially concerns, but naturally, you can get different and more fun out of it.

Somehours you can takethe product home, like the steam-turbine-boats or the runes.InformationExplaining that you, by curiosity in a subject, will gain newknowledge. For example in history or nature.SkillsExplaining that you will be learning a new skill or technique.MovementExplaining that, in the activity, physical movement is included, fxpool kayaks, hikes or games.CooperationExplaining that cooperation will be necessary for solving the task.InventorExplaining that creativity, inventions and innovations areemphasized, like building in more storeys or the word machine.EnvironmentExplaining that the activity contains subjects from the environmentprogram, like plants and photosynthesises and the steam turbine.Nature guideExplaining that a nature guide or an assistant is available for theactivity – see page 9 to get more information.UniqueActivities marked with this icon are not found anywhere but onNaesby - don't miss this chance!

The Environment ProgrammeThe Naesbycentre is member of the "Scenes Network"(Scouts Centres of Excellence for Nature andEnvironment) which is a series of centres around theworld, who commits working intensively with nature andenvironment. That is why we, for this years summercamps, have launched a new environment programme, made of five elements, symbolising our fingers - a hand.Only hands can make a difference, when we want to take responsibilityfor the environment. Every guest on a camp must participate actively inall of the programme, to be able to carry the environmental patch on theuniform. The environmental patch is a symbol of succeeding theprogramme, but more important is, that you'll get new knowledge andare willing to make a difference - now and forever. The five elements• Sorting garbage and recycling• Energy consumption• Environmental effort in your local area• Our declaration• When returning home, we will...At the preliminary weekend you will receive a flyer, and the staff memberresponsible for the programme will explain many more details forparticipating in the programme on camp.Sorting garbageEvery group will, at camp start, receive six buckets and must design andbuild a recycling place on camp site.Colour of buckets• Dark green bucket: Compost• Yellow bucket: Plastic• White bucket: Cardboard• Grey bucket: Metal• Neon green bucket: Glass• Red bucket: Everything else

Miscellaneous PossibilitiesThe open air kitchenOn this centre we have a huge roofed kitchen. The kitchen contains twostone ovens and two wood stows and plenty of good space. It is possibleto book the kitchen to do some alternative cooking instead of the usualbonfire cooking – how about making lasagne, pizza, cookies or even awhole tenderloin? See activity F-55 for more information.SheltersSpread out all over our big centre, we have 4 shelters and a Sámi shelter– a kind of hut with grass on the roof. You can borrow the shelters, andstay overnight instead of ordinary camping. In front of every shelter, there is a fire place, making a cup of coffee, the or chocolate beforebedhour an option. Contact the staff responsible for the activities if youwant to use these offers, or write it on your activity list, centred in themiddle of this book.Tours and hikesWe offer a lot of hike routes, short for the youngsters, who doesn’t wantto walk as far and longer for the older scouts. It is also possible to hike onbike if that’s what you want, or a canoeing hike; that you must talk withyour camp leader about. The centre is situated right in the centre of Sjaelland with all kind ofsights placed all around us. Like a trip to Copenhagen, Holmegåaardsglass factory, the amusement park “Bonbonland” or a refreshing swim inthe nearby swimming facilities.

Common ActivitiesThe good thing about a centre camp is that you’ll have the opportunity tomeet a lot of other scouts. We are always trying to arrange a number ofcommon activities involving you. Talk to your camp leader about, what ispossible when you are here.Normally there are held 1-2 common camp fires and 1 service. We alsoattach great importance to a common activity day, where everybody isworking on a shared theme, and often the day is ended with a big dinner. We offer Giant Stratego, an activity for up to 80 people, running aroundall camp, looking for the coveted flag. Or Japanese Stratego, where 4army’s battle for killing the opposite Shoguns – only made possible withthe beautiful Geisha, which is in need of protection of her own. Commonfor every event is that it is a great opportunity to get to know scoutsfrom different groups and even different countries.

The centre also offers a number oftheme races, all prepared andarranged by the staff and the leadersof your group. Normally the wholecamp is participating in the themeraces. Depending of the number ofguests, the race can be divided intoclasses sorted by age.Talk to your camp leader about whichtheme races there is held whenyou’re here.Cooking in the open air kitchen
