The word “vicarious” is an adjective referring to something “experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person.” It is something we particularly see happening at this time of the year as football teams win or lose in the “important” games at the end of the season. “We had a great year!” we hear Hawthorn or All Blacks supporters say, or West Coast or Wallabies fans saying, “We gave it our best shot, but weren’t quite good enough on the day.” I recently came across a poem called “Vicariously”, on the “warriorpoetwisdom.com” website, which captures something of this idea. Here are just 4 stanzas from what is a much longer piece: He pushes himself to his edge He sacrifices, makes a pledge To expect more from himself than of others He puts on all his gear and walks Out of the locker room and talks With his comrades, his teammates and his brothers But soon they’re all drowned out by fans Who yell and scream within the stands Who shout, “We’re gonna win!” with all their might A man who hasn’t run in ages Takes a swig of beer and rages “Show them what we’re made of and go fight!” This reminds me that it’s pretty easy to sit on the sidelines but still somehow imagine or believe that we are a real part of the action, while in reality it is someone else who is doing all the work and making all the sacrifice. I was very pleased that my team won the Rugby World Cup but I have to remember that my contribution of staying up late to watch the game did not add one thing to the team’s performance on the day. I earned some minor bragging rights, but only by virtue of my continuing choice, when it comes to rugby, to barrack for my country of birth rather than my adopted home. Planning for the Future The word “vicarious” is an adjective referring to something “experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person.” It is something we particularly see happening at this time of the year as football teams win or lose in the “important” games at the end of the season. “We had a great year!” we hear Hawthorn or All Blacks supporters say, or West Coast or Wallabies fans saying, “We gave it our best shot, but weren’t quite good enough on the day.” I recently came across a poem called “Vicariously”, on the “warriorpoetwisdom.com” website, which captures something of this idea. the flame Wednesday 4 November 2015 I have noticed from time to time that as Salvationists there is a danger that we can live somewhat vicariously. We are part of a movement that does some great things, but we can sometimes be little more than just supporters who wear our club colours without making any real or significant contribution. So as an officer, a Salvationist, and even as a follower of Christ I have to ask myself am I the “man who hasn’t run in ages…..” or the one who “pushes himself to his edge (who) sacrifices, makes a pledge”? I never want to live my life vicariously, through the actions and achievements of others that I align myself with. I want, instead, to be really involved in the struggle, to be able to look back and say that I actually contributed something meaningful, that I did my part and helped others to do theirs. I want to be able to say with Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (1 Tim 4:7) rather than say that I watched a great fight. “Lord, help me to be an authentic participant in all of the battles and experiences of life that you have called me to.” Major Warren Elliott Divisional Mission Resources Secretary

"Celebrating the life and ministry of CSM/Bandmaster Fred Freind" At a recent Sunday morning worship meeting at the Northam Corps, we all came together to celebrate our life in Christ, also included within the worship we unveiled a special plaque highlighting the life of Corps Sergeant Major Fred Freind who served God and the community. Along with his wife Mrs Ada Freind, both gave wholeheartedly to the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army throughout Northam and surrounding districts. Promoted to Glory in 2003 – this occasion was a moment to celebrate His life through recognition of this plaque that will hang on the back wall of the Northam Corps worship centre. Over the years CSM Fred Freind received numerous recognitions for his serve to people of Northam. A number of people shared memories/stories relating to their connection to CSM Fred Freind. It was a real joy to share in such an occasion where personally my relationship with CSM Fred Freind goes back to my early teenage years receiving the encouragement, teaching, words of wisdom etc that gave me the foundations that has lead me to where I am today.
