Left Beaufort in fall of 1965 for Virginia Military Institute. A few wrong answers on a couple of
important quizzes put me on the road, so to speak. Joined the Marine Corps Reserve, picked up a
geology degree from Georgia Southern, married the most patient and loving woman in the world,
Taffy, and finally obtained a degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech. Headed west and
worked thirty-seven years at a nuclear plant in Bay City, TX. I have two wonderful children, a son
in Houston and a daughter in Tucson, AZ. I have three grandsons, all of whom truly believe that
I once fought with pirates!

paralegal until I retired in 2012 and now work part time as cashier at Bi-Lo. I have two beautiful
grandchildren, Emily Grace, age 6, and Christopher, age 3, who reside with my wonderful son,
James, and his beautiful wife, Jen, in Cincinnati, OH. I have two four-legged children (Buck and
Gunner) who make my life so enjoyable. I am still painting landscapes and learning new
techniques as I keep striving to improve my art. I still love our coastal waters and fishing, either
saltwater or freshwater. I don’t have a claim to fame, but I do enjoy spending time with my sister,
Phyllis, and our Tidal Wave Class of 65 classmates, who mean the world to me. Heck, I am still
trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up!

After 44 years full time employment in the nursing profession I am enjoying full time retirement
in Anderson, S.C…especially no weekends, nights, holidays or on call schedules to coordinate! I
graduated from St Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Savannah, GA and earned my Master’s
Degree from LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. I have a wonderful son and daughter-in-law
living in Greenville, S.C. In retirement I am enjoying golf, reading, cooking and sewing and
tolerating never ending yard work.

I left Beaufort at the end of 11th
grade because my father was transferred to Quantico, Va, where
I actually graduated. But Beaufort High was always my heart school, so my loyalty remains there.
After graduation, I went to Smith College, in Northampton, MA where I met my husband Edward
(Ted) Gundy, Dartmouth ’68. We were married three weeks after I graduated and moved to New
York City. He attended Union Theological Seminary while I worked for First National City Bank.

It was quite a tumultuous time, with the Vietnam War, Kent State, etc. After three years in
seminary, my husband switched gears and went to Cornell Medical School and then Hospital for
Special Surgery to pursue orthopedic surgery. During this time I got my Counseling Psychology
degree from Columbia and began to work as a guidance counselor in Westchester County schools.
We moved to Rye, New York, where my husband grew up (obviously I married “roots”). After my
children were in elementary and high school, I went back for my post graduate degree in Marriage
and Family therapy, and have had a private practice now for 33 years. I have three children, and
five grandchildren with one on the way. Tasker is an MD at Brigham Womens and Childrens in
Boston, specializing in anesthesia and pain management (which all us baby boomers really need!)
and has three daughters. Matt is living in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and daughter. He is in audio
post production in the movie business and was recently nominated for an Emmy for his sound
design work on the nature show “Duckumentary.” (spelling is right, a whimsical story about
ducks!) And last but not least, my daughter Amanda is a professional glass blower, living also in
Boston with her husband and daughter, 3 months old. So I have five granddaughters, but Matt and
his wife are expecting a boy in December! After 46 years of marriage and living and working in
the same community, life is full!

and our lives became a part of Beaufort. We built a house and met many of my now Beaufort
friends, that was in 1956. My mother had this great desire to catch fish, crabs and shrimp so we
spent many weekends at the Broad River Bridge as it was being built at that time. I remember the
Breeze Theater, Al’s steak house, Luther’s for ice cream and its booths that were at the front
window overlooking Bay Street. There was a five and dime store, Lipstiz where my mother bought
my shoes and the x-ray machine that could tell if the shoes fit well. Fordham’s Hardware store
where you could find almost anything and Hendrick’s furniture store where we bought most of
our furniture for our new house. Dad was stationed many times back and forth from Parris Island
and MCAS Beaufort. We got stationed to Camp Pendleton in 1961. My brother Todd was born
there and then in 1964 we moved back to Beaufort. We were so happy to be back. Lee and I
graduated from BHS in 1965. I got my first job working at MCAS Beaufort Federal Credit Union
and worked there until 1978 where I then worked for First Federal of Beaufort as Corporate
Treasurer which merged with Palmetto Federal in 1982. I moved to Aiken S.C. as Corporate
Treasurer of Palmetto Federal until 1986. I moved back to Beaufort to start my own business and
then in 1991 was elected Treasurer of Beaufort County until I retired in 2011. I have two beautiful
daughters, Mel (1973) and Evelyn (1976). I have two son-in-laws and five grandchildren. I was
married twice, Kenny Logan, and then to the love of my life, Sam Smith, deceased. I remain in
Beaufort and live on Huspah Creek overlooking the marsh and seeing the wildlife every day.
Beautiful Beaufort by the sea! I love it!

tells stories to entertain, educate, and pass on cultural heritage, but most of all for the joy of telling
tales. With powerful vocal quality and stage presence, stories are delivered in a highly polished

Since graduating from Beaufort High School I have experienced a life full of fun and adventure.
Upon graduation from high school, I traveled with my Marine Corps family and lived in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and finally settled in the great state of Texas. I
began my career at State Farm Insurance and enjoyed 25 years with that company. While working
full time, I attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX where I obtained my Bachelor of Science
degree in Criminal Justice. Although I didn’t have a career in the field of Criminal Justice,
completing my 4 year degree was a lifetime goal that I set and was proud to accomplish. I have
been an active volunteer and supporter of many charitable events throughout my community for
many years. I was the March of Dimes chairperson for State Farm for many years, volunteered for
the Toys for Tots foundation, and currently serve as a volunteer for the Christian Care Center and
community service through my church organizations. As an interesting side note, I have enjoyed
living life to the fullest by doing things such as taking up tap and jazz as an adult and modeling for
Dillard’s Department Store. I am currently in my 5th
year of traveling throughout the country
working on the Production Staff for National American Miss, the largest teen pageant organization
for young ladies in the country. I have always had a determined spirit and strong will. I am a
fighter. This was most evident in my recent battle with breast cancer. With my strong faith in God,
-24-
the prayers and support of family and friends, along with the skilled hands of excellent doctors,
I am proud to say I am in my 5th
year of being cancer free. I am looking forward to a European trip
next summer with my beautiful daughter, Michelle, of whom I am so proud. We both enjoy
traveling and creating wonderful memories. I am excited to reunite and reconnect with many of
my longtime friends.

plans to tour the famous Route 66 next fall. I visit Barbara often in Mobile, AL and I stay on the
road as much as I can. My youngest daughter and my granddaughter are living with me now. I
have a mini dachshund (Rusty) that takes care of me now. Also I have visited the Grand Canyon
& Mt. Rushmore. I have found that the Gulf Coast has the sweetest shrimp. I have eaten at Lulu’s
in Gulf Shores and it was great. She is Jimmy Buffet’s sister. Johnny and I were married for 45
years when he died. It has taken me a long time to get over his death. Barbara helped me a lot
when he passed away and when I had breast cancer. It has been three hard years without Johnny,
but I am trying to finish what he dreamed of doing, After visiting Route 66, I plan to visit the Outer

I was born in Dublin, GA in March of 1947. In 1949 against my will, I was taken from the loving
arms of my grandmother and brought to this little seaside town of Beaufort when the Beaufort
Naval Hospital opened and provided jobs for my young parents. Eventually, I learned to love this
town and the people in it. I enjoyed school and the birth of three siblings. I met my husband at the
Baptist Church of Beaufort when I was a senior at Beaufort High. He had just graduated from
Clemson. I headed to Winthrop College and he to Officer’s Training School for the Navy and later
Vietnam. After I graduated from Winthrop, we were married and returned to Beaufort to live. I
began a teaching career at Beaufort High and worked with some of the teachers who had
previously taught me. That was an interesting experience. Later, I taught adult education classes
for the county and English at Beaufort Academy and TCL. Bruce and I have three adult children,
Brett, Eric and Joy. We chose to bring them up here because we wanted the benefits of
grandparents. And, now, years later, we are the proud grandparents of seven. It’s been our
pleasure to live in Beaufort all of these years.

"...In Dixie's Land, where I was born in, early on one frosty mornin'...." December 17, 1946 at
Cherry Point, North Carolina. Raised on or near U. S. Marine Corps bases like many of my BHS
1965 classmates. This taught us to be tough and flexible for life. I was fortunate to attend all four
years of high school at Beaufort High. We were bused in daily from Laurel Bay. I was told by a
graduating senior when I was in the eighth grade to enjoy high school, before responsibility hit.
So I did enjoy high school. I was only absent two days in the ninth grade because of some flu. I
didn't want to miss anything. We moved a few days after graduation to Camp Lejeune, NC . I did
not want to leave Beaufort. I did not go to Northern Michigan University, as planned, because it
was too far from Beaufort. I attended East Carolina College, at that time, in the evenings and
worked at the PX during the day. And I visited Beaufort when I could. I met Hazen Culley at Camp
Lejeune and we were married June 4, 1967, two years to the day after high school graduation. The
-37-
next thirty-seven years included two beautiful daughters, seventeen addresses, I finally finished
my degree, and Hazen and I both had careers with State Farm Insurance. I retired Dec. 1, 2003
a couple weeks before our youngest daughter was married. Hazen retired the next May and we
moved to beautiful Beaufort in July of 2004. So I came back as soon as I could. We love Beaufort
and all the friends we have here. Many of our friends were friends I had in high school. Jody
Henson and I have been friends since 1962 and now he and Anita are a big part of our lives. We
are members of Carteret Street United Methodist Church and I'm active with my Circle. I've been
a member of The Beaufort Garden Club since 2005 and held almost every office, except Treasurer.
Hazen and I have been on Viking and Vantage European river cruises. We love the cruising, hate
the flying. We are cruising again Oct. 18, for three weeks, from Lake Bled, Slovenia to Athens,
Greece. Our oldest daughter, Carol, has two sons; Sam (11) and Jack (9). They live in Cumming,
Ga. and Carol works for State Farm Insurance. Cadra, a year younger than Carol, moved here with
her husband and son in 2007. So now we get to spoil William (9) every chance we get. Cadra is
the art teacher at Lady's Island Middle School. So here we live in Dixie Land, enjoying life.

I had a 35 year career with Allstate Insurance. First in Beaufort, where my two children, Tyler and
Tara, were born. In 1993, we moved to Greenville, where they married and gave me 4 beautiful
grandchildren, Caroline 15, Ava 10, Georgia and Garrett (twins) 13. After a 45 year marriage,
where we just grew apart, I was divorced. A year later, I married Skip, a wonderful man that I had
known for years. We’ve been married 5 years and 2 years ago decided to move back to Beaufort.
We have traveled a bit. The most memorable trip being a 3 week cruise where we visited 6
European countries.

Having no direction in life, ended up attending Palmer College at Charleston for two years. Still lost
in the world, I ended up getting drafted in the army during 1968 and 1969. Ended up with the
“Old Guard” protecting Presidents Johnson and Nixon from the racial riots and the war protesters,
and also burying everyone coming back from Vietnam at the Arlington Cemetery in Washington
DC. After graduating from the Baptist College at Charleston, started to work for my father at the
First Federal Savings and Loans Association. Then five years later, he fired me because of
management uprising, which the renegade management was using me to go against him. Before
that happened, my first marriage got dissolved after I jumped into the pool with Candy Dobyns
during our 10th
reunion. During 1977, I got into my little MGB, and drove across and around the
country. Ended up in San Francisco where I discovered it was a Mecca for straight single males.
In San Francisco, where I finally found myself, found employment with a bond and money market
division of a national bank dealing with US Treasury securities and municipal bonds. After about
5 years later, my boss’ girlfriend wanted my job. After I tried for several years to make it in the
financial planning business, my 2nd
wife told me to get a real job. I took the CPA exam and passed

it all in one sitting. Started a CPA practice during 1996 in the financial district San Francisco, and
sold the business last December 2014. The buyer is employing me to assist him with the CPA
business and supporting my lifestyle residing in both San Francisco and Beaufort. Two children
from the 2nd
wife, daughter age 31 and son age 28. They both live in San Francisco.
Currently heavily involved with a girlfriend, Sue, who I met on a blind date in Columbia during
the summer of 1963

I left my beloved Beaufort in 1967 and here’s the short version of 50 years…I lived in Michigan,
Maryland, Brasil…got married and divorced…had a beautiful daughter, and raised her in
Michigan…and had a great life up “North.” In 2010, I made a life changing decision. I took an
early retirement from my college job, left Michigan after 43 years to move to New Jersey to be close
to family. It’s been quite an adjustment, but the only constant IS change, right?! I found an
awesome job at Montclair State University at the Ben Samuels Children’s Center. I’ve made a new
circle of friends, tried some new hobbies (hiking, geocaching and kayaking) and have gotten to
explore the Big Apple! Family is EVERYTHING and I absolutely adore spending time with my 3
grandchildren, Toby, Nate and Gabi. Life is definitely good!

It’s hard to put 50 years into 100 words or less. After high school I found a passion in architectural
design, received by degree from UGA, and worked at Fripp Island when it was developing, designed
the fence for Marshlands which is a historical landmark, redesigned Wallace and Danner,
Hendricks law offices, and several other projects around Beaufort. Did a “Turn of the Century”
restaurant for Underground Atlanta; and then found another passion in teaching children with
learning problems. Helped develop St. Peter’s Catholic School. Was on the Board there and on the
board of the Oron Society for Word Blindness. Managed to do both design and teaching until the
school day became longer and longer. Was in Who’s Who among American Teachers in 1992.
Was Chairman of the Special Education Department for 13 years. Taught for 38 years and retired
in 2008. Met my husband, Pete Flood, in 1974, got married in 1974, we have our son, David, born
in 1976, and our daughter, Lisa, born in 1978. Lisa married and gave us two grandchildren,

Mountain Rose, born 2004, and Kaia Sol, born 2008. All our children live in Hawaii and are

The day after graduating from BHS, I moved from Beaufort to Jacksonville, FL, where I attended
Massey Business College, graduating with an Associates in Business. I moved to Charleston in late

In memory of those who have passed:
You left us too soon and you are forever locked in our hearts and minds. You will never be
forgotten. We know your spirits are with us as we celebrate our 50th
Class Reunion. We will
remember your laughter and joy during our school years. And we will remember our excitement
at graduation in 1965 when we were filled with all the hopes and expectations of life. We hope
that you reached your goals, that you had love and joy in your lives, and that you treasured your
memories of BHS “Tidal Wave” as much as we treasured you. You all impacted our lives in ways
that you never knew and we truly loved you.
Thank you Anne Darby Mobley
