The following study guide has been carefully constructed to give fundamental support to

the ACWGC Union Army Awards system. Army and Corps Commanders will find this study

especially useful as a base guide for determining the proper battlefield ribbon for the particular

scenario played.

The study guide is constructed in a rolling table format in which all of the actions and

battles of the main game package(s) are primarily listed in order of their historical or ahistorical

date/time chronology. Larger, multiple-day scenarios generally follow in sequence all of the

smaller, single-day scenarios of which they are composed. Note should be taken that this order

is not always the order in which the scenarios are presented upon the original game disks. The

game and scenario designers did not always undertake a common, progressive identification

method in their presentations that could be considered universal in its application. Therefore

there are great differences from game package to game package in how the scenarios are listed,

as well as great differences within the same game package!

The battle date order is further sub-ordered based upon the general date of publication.

Thus the TalonSoft BattleGround scenarios and modifications will always precede the HPS

Simulations scenarios and modifications for that particular battle date.

The tables are headed by the description of the battle or action with which the scenario

group is associated. If there are any scenarios within that description that qualify by turn count

for a possible MAJOR VICTORY, then the selected file name and graphic of the updated award

ribbon are also displayed within the header, to the right of the older, displaced ribbon.

Each scenario entry within a table includes the ACWGC abbreviation of the parent game,

the scenario ID number or type if given, the number of constructed game turns, the historical

date of the scenario, and the exact description as given within the game. In addition, the number

of scenario turns is prefixed with an alpha character(s), which identifies the nature of the

scenario. The exact program scn (scenario) file identification is also included with the

description.

Note flashes are appropriately inserted into the study guide where necessary to indicate

additional information given at the end. Officers are encouraged to scan the abbreviation Legend

Key in the rear before using this guide. Special notes are sometimes inserted into the tables for

immediate read.

This study includes all of the scenarios contained in HPS Campaign Chancellorsville

(HPSCCV) and the modified scenarios originating from the TalonSoft Battleground Bull Run

(BGBR), Battleground Antietam (BGN), and HPS Corinth 1.01 modifications for the

Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville battles.

The new “Chancellorsville Series” UA awards have been designed to integrate well with the

existing UA awards and, at the same time, to clearly stand apart. Two existing ribbons had

heretofore represented only modified battles of this era, and special treatment has been made to

incorporate some of their original color design into the corresponding new battle ribbons. The

base color of the new Chancellorsville awards is royal purple. The four basic trim colors include

red, rose, black and cream white.

This four-color pattern supports a greater visual distinction of the individual ribbons

composing the Chancellorsville Series set, which consists of a total of 14 base ribbons and two

“attachment” ribbons. The battle ribbon set is divided into four groups: those battles leading up

to Fredericksburg; the Falmouth and Fredericksburg battles; the January to April, 1863 period

actions including the battles fought within the Chancellorsville campaign; and the unique “What-

If” scenarios following Chancellorsville.

(No ribbons are currently authorized for an AI contest of any length.)

Many of the separate battles and actions were not given distinctive names by the game

designer, who preferred instead to identify them largely by just the prosaic elements of their

time, date and type. Battle names are a necessary element in the Union Award system.

Therefore the battle names suggested for those particular actions were selected after a careful

study of the maps, forces involved and campaign overview.

The treatment of the two larger battles, especially Chancellorsville, demanded a closer

scrutiny, given the huge variety of both historical and ahistorical scenario constructions and the

inclusion of the novel “blind meetings”. After considering a number of different methods and

ribbon combinations to adequately distinguish these scenarios from each other, a system of

scenario day-length was adopted. This allowed the variations to be distinguished by their scope

of challenge and not lumped together unequally

The game designer also elected to include a larger number of “Equal Force Fights” in this

campaign set, some of them 35 turns or greater. In addition, some of the EFF scenarios are

overlays of existing non-EFF scenarios of the same name, posing a problem in making a

distinction for the awards. This was solved by the addition of an “equal bars” attachment to the

EFF award, a precedent which may be adopted whenever this may occur throughout the entire

UA battle award inventory.)

NF – Norris-Frost Scenario

SG – Spring Graphics

W – What-If Scenario

w – Weather Scenario (Weather Rules)

2 The first sub-group consists of four, “What-If”, preliminary battles of the Fredericksburg Campaign and a two-

day, open simulation of Burnside’s campaign shift to the east and Fredericksburg approach (Rappahannock). These

battle ribbons all feature red as the dominant, vertical bar color. A distinction was made between Brock Road and

Orange Plank Road, as the first is exclusively a cavalry battle. Silver Sabres is also a cavalry battle but occurs at a

later date in the campaign and over a much more broad area. The Rappahannock scenarios have been separated out

from the Fredericksburg set and given their own distinguishing name by virtue of their wide open, ahistorical nature;

but have also been accorded the unique facsimile central device of the Fredericksburg battle set in addition to the red

group color.

3 The second sub-group consists of the actions from November 21 to December 17, 1862. They include one,

preliminary, “What-If” battle entitled Marye’s Heights, the so-called “Face Off” and “City” battles (none of which

qualify for a ribbon), the single and multiple day versions of Fredericksburg, and an interesting “What-If” situation

called 2nd Fredericksburg. These battle ribbons, with the exception of the Fredericksburg ribbons, which contain

the facsimile of the original Fredericksburg ribbon, feature rose as the dominant, vertical bar color.

4 The third sub-group consists of the actions from January 1 to April 16, 1863. They include two AI Challenge

scenarios (Wilderness Fields and Fort Jackson); the historical Kelly’s Ford and Bank’s Ford actions and the

imaginary King of the Mountain scenario, none of which qualify for a separate ribbon; and four “What-If” actions

(Wilderness ’63, Hazel Grove, Ely’s Ford and Upper Fords) all of which do qualify. This group also includes all of

the Chancellorsville day-length variations, the ribbons of which are set apart with the facsimile of the original

Chancellorsville ribbon. The group is rounded out with the three actions of Dowdall’s Tavern (an “Equal Fight”

scenario), two versions of Salem Church (Historical and “Equal Fight”). With the exception of the Chancellorsville

variations, these battle ribbons feature black as the dominant, vertical bar color.

5 The fourth sub-group consists solely of the Burnt Bridges “What-If” scenarios, a Union defense of Fredericksburg.

The group features cream white as the dominant, vertical bar color.
