PART 1I

COORDINATE INDEX

INTRODUCTION

It has become apparent from the users of the REIC Monthly AccessionList that it is no longer being used just for current awareness searches, as

was originally intended, but is now being used by some individual and/or or-ganizations to conduct retrospective searches. The REIC Technical InformationFile at Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio, was designed to maintainthe complete store of information used to compile the Accession Lists, ansd con-duct such searches. With the collection of a large number of reports dealingvrith radiation effects by many of the larger company libraries, as a result ofthe use of the Accession Lists, searching other sources, and internal researchreport preparation, the staff of the REIC has determined that an index to theabstracts provided in the Monthly Accession List would be highly desirable. It was found that the major REIC sponsor. the U.S. Air Force, AeronauticalSystems Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, also shared in thisreasoning.

The coordinate index approach was chosen, as it provides seve2raltimes the number of access points to the abstracts, and a much highcr degree'of search specificity than could be provided by a convenz:onal index.

Under each term in the index will be found the abstract accessionnumbers of documents which have been indexed by that term. The accessionnumbers have been arranged in ten columns in accordance with t- ieir Ltrminaldigit, so that accession numbers may be compared collmn b:, iolunn. Links

are used where necessary to show the relationship of term,. and to avoid un-necessary false abstract retrieval. Role indicators have not been usedbecause of the rextremely narrow scope of the literature abstracted. Forexample, it N. found that only four of the proposed Engineers Joint Councilrole indicators would have been used with the majority of terms used.

The terms and concepts used to index the abstracts have beenselected on the basis of the REIC contract scope and the (:xperience gainedduring the past five years in assisting users of the Technical InformationFile to locate information. Comments from the recipients and users ofthis index will enhance its future value as a ready search tool.

It should be noted that this is a SELECTED ACCESSION LIST, thus notall documents extracted for the REIC Technical Information File are abstractedfor the Monthly Accession List. Approximately sixty per cent of the litera-ture extracted for the REIC Technical Information File is abstracted for theMonthly Accession List. The remaining forty per cent consists of newsbriefs, author abstracts, extracts of internal papers, classified and proprietary mate-rial, which is felt not to be appropriate for inclusion in the Monthly Acces-sicn List. Hence. in order to assure cLmpleteness in searches and to obtaininformation on the most recently acquired reports, it is necessary to contactthe REIC. This dissemination service is not intended to replace direct con-tact with REIC, but rather to supplement such contact at the various locationsremote to the center. Direct contact with the Center and its technical staffis encouraged.

-112-

A cumulative index will be provided each month, so that the previousmonth's index may be discarded, thus reducing the amount of space required forstorage of the accession lists. Further, it is envisioned that at the end ofeach contract year, a dual coordinate dictionary will be provided to facilitatethe use of abstracts for retrospective searching.

For the users who plan to continue the use of the accession list forcurrent surveillance, the generic terms; miscellaneous, organic and inorganiccompounds, electronics, polymers, metals and ceramics, dosimetry, facilities, and space are included in the second section of the index to provide the gen-eral subject category as used in the Monthly Accession List format over theprevious years.

The coordinate index, as appearing this month, will be modified andrevised to fit the needs of the REIC users.

ORGANIZATION

The following sections are provided:

Section I: Radiation Environment

Section II: Materials, Properties,Secondary Environments,Devices, and OtherCoordinate Terms

Section III: Authors

Section IV: Organizations

Section I includes the various types of radiation with electronenergy, absorbed gamma dose, and neutron energy range subdivisions provided. The term space radiation is not included in this section; however, as aconcept it is placed in Section II. The constituents of space radiation, electrons and protons, are, however, located in Section I when numiericalvalues are attached to them.

Section II provides the terms and concepts for the various materials, properties, processes. The secondary environment concept, temperature, isindexed by temperature range to facilitate the location of the abstracts whichdeal with specific temperatures. The secondary or possibly primary environment, vacuum, is also included in its respective alphabetic position.

The authors of the abstracts are included in alphabetic order inSection III.

I-113-

Section IV, of the organizations generating the reports, is dividedinto three subdivisions: U.S. Organizations, U.S. Government Agencies, andForeign Organizations. Under each subdivision the organizations are listedalphabetically.

The REIC does not loan or distribute reports which are abstractedfor the Monthly Accession List. The documents are, however, available for youruse at the Center.

USE OF THE INDEX

The following examples indicate the approach to be followed inusing the index.

A. If you are interested in radiation effects on power converters, proceedas follows:

1. Turn in Section II to the concept power converters, which is listed in alphabetic order.

2. Note the accessions' numbers listed (17646 and17898).

3. In the abstract portion of the Monthly AccessionList locate the numbers which are provided withthe bibliographic citation in numerical order.

4. On the basis of the information provided in theabstract you should be able to determine the"1,ý'tinence of the article to your interest.

B. If you were interested, for example, in pulsed radiation effects oncables, proceed as follows:

1. Turn in Section I to the concept pulsed radiation.

2. Turn in Section II to the term cable.

3. Compare the accession numbers under pulsed radiationand cable, column by column. The coordination willyield five cormnon numbers (17650, 17921, 17522, 17626,and 17949), which should be noted.

4. Turn in the abstract portion of the MonthlyAccession List to the numbers for furtherbibliographic and abstract information.

C. If you were interested in the effect of 109 ergs g'l(C) on glass, proceedas follows:

Page 7: AD 401 755' · 2018-11-08 · NOTICE: When government or other drawings, speci-fications or other data are used for any purpose other than in connection with a definitely related

-114-

1, Turn in Section I to CGma 10 9 ergs g '(C).

2. Turn in Section II to Glass.

3. Compare the accession numbers column by column. The comparison will yield two common numbers(17365 and 17694).

4. Turn to the abstracts in the Monthly AccessionList for further information as to theirpertinence to your interest.

D. If you were interested in the effect of fast neutron irradiation of 1019n/cm2 on steels, you would proceed as follows:

1. In Section I locate fast neutron irradiation.

2. In Section I locate 1019 n/cm2 (included inthe 1019 to 1021 n/cm range).

3. Compare the accession numbers column by column.The comparison will yield twelve common numbers(17370, 17662, 17823B, 17375, 17665, 17985,17836, 17327, 17627A, 17349, 17379, and 17849).

4. Compare those accession numbers which were foundto be common (as indicated above) column bycolumn with the term steel in Section II. Thecomparison will yield three common numbers(17375, 17327, and 17849).

5. By turning to the abstracts, further informationis obtained.
