  The three-aql-JANET interconnect…

 Service Overview – Eduroam compatibility

Service Overview .. Behind the scenes.

 Setting up the Service..

aql & ‘Customer’ agree network allocation to assign to 3G devices.

◦  Could be a single block allocated to mobile use, shared across all Universities ◦  Could be a small allocation from each

universities range (eg a /20). ◦  aql assign IP’s either permanently to each SIM

(statically) or randomly from a pool.

  Tech Overview

aql provide a managed L2TP service on behalf of JANET and the Universities/Colleges, handing off at Layer 3, routing over aql-JANET private peering

NO NAT – PPP session allows aql to natively assign IP to the end device. (although it is possible to provide a NAT’d service as an alternative).

Inbound traffic to the mobile device blocked by default.

To NAT or Not to NAT

Most mobile networks NAT or double NAT! ◦ Most useful if the IP is static, even if NAT’d

Options to provide NON NAT static IP’s to specialist ‘machine to machine’ devices eg: ◦ CCTV Cameras ◦ Research applications (embedded connectivity) ◦ More easily accessed.

 Service Overview – Tech rollout

 Sample Tariff Types

◦  12 Month Contract   Inclusive data – eg 2GB data/month   Free Dongle.

◦  24 Month Contract   Inclusive data – eg 2GB, 15GB data/month   Free Mi-fi.

◦  SIM-Only – Pay for what you use.   Data Billed at x pence per MB   Low monthly charges
