The Three Souls
• People were believed to have three souls: Ka, Ba, and Akh– Ka was a duplicate of the body, but less solid– Ba could leave the tomb and revisit the mortal
world– Akh was the immortal soul that existed once Ba
and Ka united after the person’s death
•Mummification was used to preserve these souls

Embalmers
• Four different types of embalmers– Hery Sesheta- made the incision for removal of the
internal organs – Hetemw Netjer - assisted the Hery Sesheta with the death
rituals– Hery Heb- read spells and prayers– Wetyw- removed the organs and bandaged the mummy
• They were very secretive about their work

70-Day Rule
• The process lasted for 70 days– 15 days for cleaning and purification– 40 days for drying– 15 days for wrapping,
bandaging, and painting

• Step 1- Body taken to embalmers• Step 2- Body was washed• Step 3- Brain was removed• Step 4- Sap was poured into brain, to keep the
skull from collapsing• Step 5- Intestines were removed
