The strength of the fear is determined by the number of repetitions of the association betweenthe pain/fear experience and the stimuli, and also by the intensity of the fear or painexperienced in the presence of the stimuli. Stimuli resembling the fear-evoking ones also acquirefearful properties i.e. they become secondary CSs. the likelihood of fear developing is increasedby frequent repetition of the association between the new CS and the pain/fear. It was proposedfurther that once objects or situations acquire fear-provoking qualities, they develop motivatingproperties, i.e. a secondary fear drive emerges. Behaviour; patterns such as avoidance actions, which successfully reduce fear, increases in strength.
