In Every Generation
Soon we will be reading in our Passover Haggadah the message that not only Phar-aoh and the Egyptians wanted to destroy us, but in every generation, there arise those who want to annihilate us. Today, the enemies are Iran and their cohorts in Hamas and Hezbollah; and others around the world.
However, this Passover we should have an extra feeling of confidence in the second half of that message in the Haggadah: The Holy One Blessed Be He saves us from their power. Israel has not only the strong support of the United States of America but for the first time in modern history the cooperation with some of the Arab
States in the region against their common enemy Iran.
We should feel good when we say, "Barukh Shawmehr Havtakhataw L'ahmaw”, "Thanks and blessings to the One Who keeps His promise to His people".
Happy Passover ! ~ Rabbi Barukh Schectman
YIZKOR MEMORIAL SERVICE There will be a Yizkor service on Saturday
morning, April 27. When most of us think
about Yizkor, we think about Yom Kippur
afternoon when we gather each year to
recall all of our beloved family and friends
who are no longer with us. But tradition-
ally, the Yizkor memorial service is held
three other times each year. One of those
is on the eighth day of Passover. This year,
Passover concludes on Shabbat. You can
come at 9:30 and enjoy the Shabbat morn-
ing service and stay for Yizkor, or you can
come just for the Yizkor prayers which
will begin around 11:00. It is also tradi-
tional to light a yahrzeit candle on the
evening of the seventh day of Passover, so
that it will burn through to the end of the
holiday.

MEGILLAH READING
A fun time was had as members and friends joined the fun on
March 20th to hear the story of Esther, shake their groggers at
the mention of Haman and enjoy the delicious homemade
hamentashen made the day before by the 4th graders and
Katherine Kohrman. Photos by Bonnie Goldstein

THE NEZVESKY SCHOOL
Purim was celebrated with a great deal of fun this year. Our 4th graders retold the story in the style of Dr. Seuss and were followed by our 6th and 7th graders performing a Purim tune on violin, trumpet and accordion. The Purim Carnival included new activities such as Glitter Tattoo and Jelly Bean guessing. Many thanks to our volunteers, Francesca and Ben Glazer, Cheryl Gilman, Gabrielle Joshpe, Dona Malitsky, Jacob Markowsky, Susan Rubin, Jessica Sachs, Pam Tassiello, Eric Vine, and especially to our organizers, Claudia Mele and Laura Goldstein. We also had a wonderful presentation by Terry Murphy and Mariam Azeez on their book, Soulful Sydney. The Caring Committee sponsored the event and provided a copy to each family in the reli-gious school. The children appreciated its message of respect and welcoming diversity across differ-ent people. Photographs of these events can be seen elsewhere in this newsletter. April will have a number of special events even though school will be curtailed because of spring break and Pesach. On Friday, April 5 we will celebrate Rabbi Schectman turning 80 during Kabbalat Shabbat services, and on Sunday April 7 we will have our Model Seder sponsored by school families. As this year is coming to an end, we are starting to plan for next year. Some emails have already gone out for the 4-7th grades to look at scheduling for the midweek classes and how to handle the inevitable conflicts that occur each year. We are looking at new technology to ameliorate those difficulties and to enhance our children's learning. Happy Pesach!

We hope you will enjoy trying out these tasty treats each month. Bonnie Goldstein will be collecting and compiling the recipes for the newsletter. If you would like to contribute a favorite recipe for this section, please email it to her at [email protected]. If you have a photo of your dish to include with the recipe, send that too! Recipes must follow Kosher guidelines.
The following recipe was submitted by Linda Baulsir.
BRISKET
For every 2 lbs. of brisket…
Stir together in a bowl: 1 cup of Manischewitz Concord Grape Wine ¼ cup of ketchup ¼ cup maple syrup (or brown sugar or agave) 1 tablespoon mustard
Three carrots Three stalks of celery One sliced onion Three or four cloves of garlic Salt and pepper to taste Place carrots, celery, onion and crushed garlic on the bottom of a roasting pan. Place brisket on top after you have rubbed the salt and pepper into the meat. Pour the wine mixture over the top (braising liquid). Cover the roasting pan tightly with tin foil and put into a 350 degree oven for 3 ½ to 4 hours.
After allowing the meat to cool, place in the refrig-erator overnight.
Before serving, remove the fat from the braising liquid. Slice the meat and place in a shallow pan with enough liquid to cover.
Put the carrot, onion garlic and celery into either a food processor or blender and puree the vegeta-bles.
Put the remaining braising liquid in a sauce pan, bring to a boil then add the pureed vegetables (this thickens the gravy).

THANK YOU
I want to extend a belated thank you for the support that I received after my hus-band's passing. I have come to realize what an extraordinary community Adath Israel is. Your support meant the world to me.

Join our Israeli Folk Dancing Group
Israeli folk dancing has come to Adath Israel!! In Israel itself, there are thousands of dancers who enjoy Israeli dancing—known as Rikudei Am (dances of the people)—they meet regu-larly and have huge repertoires of dances. In our congregation, a group of budding enthusi-asts have been gathering at the synagogue to learn a few of these traditional dances. We meet twice monthly, usually on Tuesday eve-nings. No prior experience is necessary. We teach simple dances that can be learned easi-ly and we review the steps each time. It is fun, it is lively, and it is aerobic! It is also a perk of your synagogue membership. Non-members are also welcome, for a small fee. So, join us! And bring your friends too! For more information, and to be put on the group’s mailing list, contact Katherine Kohrman at [email protected].

Caring Committee Update
During the month of March our committee was
active in synagogue events. We sponsored a Sun-
day school program called Soulful Sydney. The
author and the girl from Newtown who inspired
the book on diversity came to speak to our chil-
dren in the Hebrew School for a book reading
and discussion. We purchased a copy of the book
for each Sunday school family. We provided re-
freshments for the students. Our committee
proudly provided the flowers for Katherine
Kohrman’s 50th anniversary of her Bat Mitzvah
celebration. In addition, we sent cards and plant-
ed trees in Israel in memory of the loved ones
recently lost by two of our congregants.
As always, if anyone knows of someone who
would benefit from our services, please contact
Sue Morse at: [email protected].
Please share your Mitzvah’s with us as well.

BOOK TALK
Local Author, Deborah Vadas Levison, talks about her new book, THE CRATE, at Adath Israel on April 28 at 2pm.
After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust – in ghettos, on death marches, and in concentration camps – a young couple seeks refuge in Canada. They settle into a new life, certain that the terrors of their past are behind them. They build them-selves a cozy little cottage on a lake in Muskoka, a cottage that becomes emblematic of their victory over the Nazis. The charming retreat is a safe haven, a refuge from haunted mem-ories.
That is, until a single act of unspeakable violence defiles their sanctuary. Poking around the dark crawl space beneath their cottage, they discover a wooden crate, nailed tightly shut and almost hidden from view. Nothing could have prepared them for the horror of the crate’s contents – or how the peace and tranquility of their lives would be shattered.
Now, their daughter, Deborah Vadas Levison, an award-winning journalist, tells the extraordinary account of her par-ents' ordeals, both in one of the darkest times in world history and their present-day lives. Written in searing, lyrical prose, THE CRATE: A Story Of War, A Murder, And Justice examines man’s seemingly limitless capacity for evil... but also, his ca-pacity for good.
