2. This information is provided for homeowners and contractors planning to
install a solid fuel (wood, pellet etc) burning appliance and/or chimney in a
Single Dwelling Unit only. Masonry fireplaces are not addressed in this
guide. For further information on such projects contact the Building
Department.
3. Although every attempt has been made to provide accurate information at
the time of printing, it is subject to change without notice and is provided as
a guide only. It is not intended to be used instead of current Municipal By-
laws or the current Building Code.
Please note that any installation of a non-masonry, solid fuel burning appliance (eg. Wood stove) shall comply with CAN/CSA-B365.

Part 1: Permit Submission 1. What do I need to obtain a building permit?
For this project you will need to provide the following forms and support documents when you apply for a permit:
a) Forms:
Building Permit Application (Called “Application for a Permit to Construct or
Demolish”) including all Schedules and Declaration of Applicant (6 pages)
b) Support Documents:
Copy of deed (or proof or ownership if property recently transferred)
Letter of authorization (if homeowner is not personally making the application)
Front view/elevation drawing/sketch (2 copies) shows appliance, wall shielding, flue
pipe and chimney arrangements looking at it from the front.
Side view/elevation drawing/sketch (2 copies) shows appliance, wall shielding, flue
pipe and chimney arrangement looking at it from the side.
Top of plan view/elevation drawing/sketch (2 copies) shows appliance position in
the room, wall clearances and shielding and floor pad – from a “birds eye” view)
Manufacturer’s Installation Instructions (for solid fuel burning appliance)
Note: If any of the required information is missing when the application is submitted, the permit application may not be
accepted.

Part 2: Permit Fees:
1. How much with the permit cost?
Building permit fees are determined by an established cost per square foot, and/or by
established flat fees as detailed in the current Building By-law. Plumbing and septic fees
are also assigned from this By-Law. The Fee Schedule is on the last few pages of the
Building By-law document.
Currently, all permit and permit related fees are due and payable when the building
permit is issued.

Part 3: Inspections
1. What type of inspections will be required for my project?
The Building Permit that you post includes a list of inspections that are required for your
project. You will be asked to sign this when you pick up your permit. The inspections will
be marked; for this type of project they generally include Base, Fire Box, Chimney and
Final inspections. If other inspections apply to your project, they will be noted on the
Inspection Agreement. Please be aware of all prescribed inspections for this type of
project according to the Building Code.
2. Does my installer need to be W.E.T.T. certified?
Yes. Please ensure that the installer is W.E.T.T. certified as we will ask for a copy of the W.E.T.T. report following installation of your wood burning appliance.

Please note that just as there are many types, sizes and shapes of wood burning appliances, there are also many different manufacturer’s specifications as each one is unique. A copy of these specifications should be given to you when you purchase your appliance. Please include this information with your permit application.
