British soldiers landed on Long Island (now Isle of Palms) – THE PLAN:

• expanse between islands is only 18 in. deep

• land forces & attack Americans (450 in fort) from the rear.

Actually: water depth over 7 feet at high tide

British guide not familiar with harbor3 ships caught on sandbars

• 2 – loosed• 1- burned

Cannon balls fired at the fort bounced off or stuck in the walls

Palmetto logs are spongy (soft)

(Americans later dug them out and used them against the British in another battle)

• During battle, flag fell

• Climbed over ramparts
