Addis Ababa (the name means 'new flower') is of fairly recent origin - Menelik II founded the city in 1887 but is an important administrative centre not only for Ethiopia but also for the whole of Africa. Situated in the foothills of the Entoto Mountains and standing 2,400 metres above sea level it is the third highest capital in the world. The city has a population of about four million. Addis Abeba is a noisy and chaotic town because of its traffic but Addis Abeba is a city with hubris, faith, hope, chaos and vibrancy… having one of the fastest rates of urban growth in the world…

We want to discover Addis Ababa...
... a chaotic and fascinating, ever-changing
metropolis in one of Africa’s poorest
countries...
Medhane Alem Cathedral, whose name means "Saviour of the World", is an Orthodox cathedral in Bole Medhanealem, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia. It is one of the largest cathedrals in the whole of Africa.
Ethiopia was well known to the ancient writers. It is mentioned in the Bible more than 38 times by both Old Testament and New Testament writers. So, in accordance with the Biblical traditions of the ancient Israel, Ethiopia is described as the land of "CUSH" which was located by the "RIVER NILE" (Gen. 2: 13).
The Septuagint (The Greek Translation) also describes Ethiopia after the name of "ETHIOPIA" which has the same location.
Apart from the Biblical traditions, many historians knew Ethiopia and described its geographical location, referring towards the south of Egypt, which was populated by both Hamitic and Semitic stocks of people.
According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, it was known as the "LAND OF PUNT" located at the end of the World, and they said "Land of Ghost. "
Homer (Greek poet of the 8th century B.C.) knew of this historical land and its people, when he said "ETHIOPIA, THE LAND OF SUN BURNED FACE." He described inhabitants again, as "THE BLAMELESS RACE."
Herodotus (Greek historian, 485-25 B.C.) praised the nation of Ethiopia as “THE MOST JUST MEN”
The legal Source of Ethiopia starts the introduction of Judaism to Ethiopia is recorded in the KEBRE NEGEST (The Glory of the Kings). This book reflects heavily its focal point upon two historical events:
A. The birth of Menilek, Son of Solomon, King of Israel and the Queen Sheba of Ethiopia. (970-33 B.C.)
B. The Ark of the Covenant which was brought to Axum from Jerusalem by the Levites. (946-B.C. ?)
Apart from the Kebre Negest, there are vast reliable written sources which describe that Ethiopia had good relationship with the Nation of Israel.
According to Biblical Sources, the relationship began in the time of Moses, which continues perpetually throughout the time of the New Testament era. (Numbers 12:1; I Kings 10:1-13; 2 Chron. 9:1-12; Mt. 12:42; Acts 8:27-39).
These sources start that next to the nation of Israel only Ethiopia knew, and confessed the Almighty God (The God of Abraham) and worshiped Him regularly.

This witness affirms the earnest prayer of Ethiopia, which was based on her impeccable faith in the Almighty God. Even among the people of Israel, the Ethiopians seem to be more dear to the Almighty God than they. For example, Amos, the Prophet, bears witness of this truth, when he says: "ARE YOU NOT LIKE THE ETHIOPIANS TO ME, O PEOPLE OF ISRAEL?"

There is no real center in the town. The poor and rich live close together, confrontation with poverty might be tough for a first time visitor. A comprehensive network of minibuses is available and taxis are everywhere. It is a very save city, but be aware of pickpockets.

Mount Entoto is the highest peak overlooking the city of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and has views of the city. It reaches 3,200 meters above sea level and is part of the Entoto mountain chain.
The mountain is densely covered by eucalyptus trees that were imported from Australia during the reign of Menelik II, and mostly planted during Emperor Haile Selassie's reign; thus it is sometimes referred to as the "lung of Addis Ababa".
The forest on the mountain is an important source of firewood for the city. It was also a source of building material in earlier times.
Mount Entoto is the best location to observe the panoramic view of the capital. It is also a historical place where Menelik II resided and built his palace, when he came from Ankober and founded Addis Ababa. It is considered a sacred mountain and holds many monasteries.

Zantedeschia aethiopica (common names calla lily, arum lily; a.k.a. varkoor, an Afrikaans name meaning 'pig's ear') is a species in the family Araceae, native to southern Africa in Lesotho, South Africa, and Swaziland
China Railway Engineering Corp expects to complete civil works for the 34 km Addis Ababa light rail system by the end of the year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
Two lines are under construction, one running 16·9 km north-south from Menelik Square to Kaliti and the second running 17·35 km east-west from Ayat to Tor Hailoch. The two lines will share tracks for a 2·7 km section between Lideta and Meskel Square.
Meyazia 27 Square is the official name of what is popularly known as Arat Kilo. In its center is the monument, commemorating Ethiopia's liberation from Fascist Italy. In the Ethiopian Calendar Meyazia 27 (May 5th), is both the day when Addis Ababa fell to Italy in the March of the Iron Will and the day when Emperor Haile Selassie triumphantly returned to the city after its liberation
The original monument included a relief of the Emperor Haile Selassie holding the flag of Ethiopia, which was altered during the rule of Mengistu Haile Mariam into a representation of a guerrilla fighter holding flag.
Addis Ababa…
... a place where Sheraton meet shanty towns, as well as where a continent’s history meets today’s challenges...
Addis Ababa…
... just a stone’s throw away from Somali pirates and Sudanese independence fighters, but a safe place nevertheless...
Addis Ababa...
... seat of the African Union’s headquarters, and therefore called the capital of political Africa...
