♫ Music Notes ♫
Marqua Brunette, Director of Choirs
The Chancel Choir
The Lord is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! Make no mistake
about it, the glorious musical sounds of Resurrection
morning are still echoing through the sanctuary at Holy
Nativity. I would like to thank the entire Chancel Choir
for their hard work in making the music of Holy Week so
meaningful. Their numerous rehearsals and hard work
paid off and I hope that their musical offerings were well
received. We had outstanding instrumentalists who
played during Holy Week and Easter and their participa-
tion was most welcomed. John Durgan continues to
amaze all of us with his talents at the organ and he
„pulled out all the stops‟ on Easter!
The Chancel Choir will offer special music for Pentecost
and a special Sunday on June 20th. As you know, the dio-
cese recognizes various churches and groups with prayer
dedicated Sundays throughout the year. On Father‟s
Day – June 20th, all church musicians in the diocese will
be prayed for so we intend to recognize the importance of
music in our worship services with special hymns and
anthems. Be sure to mark your calendars for this special
Sunday!
After June 20th, many members will be on vacations and
weekends away during summer. We are always looking
for new voices to join us. We have recently added a cou-
ple of new members and always welcome a returning
member when their schedule permits. Rehearsals are on
Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 PM in the church and Sun-
day mornings at 9:30. During summer we will take some
rehearsals nights „off‟ so feel free to contact me or the
church office to make sure there is rehearsal that night if
you want to come. We would love it if you would share
your voice with us!
Children’s Choir
This Children‟s Choir is completing another successful
season, making a total of five years since I began to lead
them. Their next musical offering will be on June 20th.
We will have one rehearsal on the Sunday before to iron
out details, but they are musically ready now! I will be in
touch with all past and current children‟s choir members
who know the song and invite them to come and sing
with us.
Their musical gift was beautifully offered on Palm Sun-
day and April 25th. I am always so proud of them, their
dedication, and their enthusiasm. On Wednesday, April
28, we celebrated the end of our regular rehearsal sched-
ule until fall. At this time their certificates were pre-
sented. The Children‟s Choir also received their choir pins
recognizing their years of participation which were worn
with great pride on April 25th. It is our pleasure to honor
13 children this year for their service in Children‟s Choir.
Those who received their first year pins were Sarah
Eaton, Sophie Eaton, Katie Marie Hutt, Shelby
Roberson, Stevens Roberson, Chappell Syfrett, Sydney
Syfrett, and Zoe Thomas, Second year pins went to Ash-
ley Doran and Ginny Leebrick. Fourth year pins were
given to James Thompson and Joseph Thompson. And
finally, a fifth year pin was awarded to Jack Thompson.
The participation of these fine children in the music min-
istry would not be possible without the commitment
from their parents and a special thank-you goes to all of
them. They are on summer break &
will resume rehearsals in September.
We will continue to rehearse on
Wednesdays from 4:00 – 5:00. All
children in grades first through
eighth are welcome. Please consider
your child‟s participation in this won-
derful opportunity for sharing in the
worship services and music ministry
at Holy Nativity.
Music Tip of the Month
So many people come to me to offer their reasons for not
being able to sing. Invariably they will put their hand on
their throat and say things like, “I just can‟t sing any-
more.” Without missing a beat, I offer the same advice.
Stop thinking that your singing all comes from your
throat and think that it is entirely from your mouth.
This will help bring the sound forward and out. Try this
little experiment sometime when you are alone – choose
a note or pitch that you think you can sing fairly com-
fortably without any straining. As you continue to hold
the note, move your lips and mouth into as many strange
contortions as you can find. Do not stop the singing dur-
ing this process. If done properly, you will discover that
your sound changes dramatically by only moving your
mouth around and nothing was changed in your throat.
Remember all those old time country singers who sang
out of the sides of their mouths? That‟s how you get that
country „twang‟ sound. Now I‟m not saying I can make
you into George Strait over night but if you start think-
ing that your voice is really in your mouth and not your
throat I guarantee your sound will improve. Once you
have tried this – re-think that excuse for not being in the
choir!

Children‟s Ministry -
May/June 2010
If you have not experienced “Chapel with Fr. Steve” on a Sunday morning at 9:15 in our HNEC replica room, you need to make the effort by May 25th. Par-ents, please try to bring your children once so that they will nag you to come again. Fr. Steve leads the service, and someone is chosen to be the crucifer. Another serves as the lector, and another even gets to be Ms. Marqua. Fr. Steve usually preaches a mini-sermon pre-view of the sermon for church. Of course, the service is followed by “coffee hour” with punch and cookies in pretend Battin Hall.
Beginning May 30, the Children’s Sunday pro-
grams will move to the summer schedule…no more 9:15 meetings until after Labor Day. However, we will continue Children’s Church time during the 10:30 ser-vice. We are hoping to make this an opportunity for our children to learn more about people in the Bible, and it is also an opportunity for you to hone your acting skills. You must be willing to dress as a Biblical charac-ter and study his/her story well enough to withstand questioning. If you have a favorite you would like to portray for the children, please let me know. And if you will need help with your costume, our Christmas Pag-eant wardrobe mistress, Ashley Eaton, is on standby to assist. I think this will be fun.
Last month, Ed Richards came as our guest speaker to tell the children about his work with prison ministry. For most of our children, this was a totally new concept of a way to show God’s love through loving one an-other. Mr. Richards told us that he helps these “bad guys” understand that God still cares for them and that there is forgiveness through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Later we made pretty cards with messages for Mr. Richards to take to the prisoners. Thank you, Mr. Richards, for teaching us about this means of Christian service.
Indeed, thank you to all of you who contribute to making Holy Nativity a wonderful place for our children.

thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. UTO
combines these generous offerings to fund significant projects that make a differ-
ence in the work of the Episcopal Church and in people's lives. UTO's mission is to:
Expand the circle of thankful people. To achieve this mission, we encourage daily

Adult Christian Education - Fr. Tom
We have had quite a smorgasbord of adult Christian education events this year! Our schedule has
included Sunday school, Tuesday afternoon Bible classes, Wednesday evening Bible classes, Educa-
tion for Ministry on Monday evening, Wednesday afternoon, and Wednesday evening;
and Wednesday evening Holy Eucharist with brief discussion of the lectionary Bible readings for each
upcoming Sunday, Advent studies, and Lenten studies.
Taking a historical approach instead of the customary devotional approach, for the New Testament
we have studied the four Gospels, non-canonical early Christian gospels including the Gospel of Tho-
mas, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Secret Mark, and the Gospel of Peter; and apocalyptic literature
including the Revelation to John, the Apocalypse of Peter, and the Shepherd of Hermas. There have
been things for almost everyone. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
After a summer recess, we'll look forward to a similar schedule, but with new subjects including
two Old Testament offerings -- Genesis, and the so-called "minor prophets" (that means the little
short books, not the "less important" ones!), and in the New Testament the Epistles of Paul, and non-
canonical epistles. Watch for announcements as summer progresses. This will be fun -- I can't wait!!
