Performance on the Kansas State Reading Assessment in 2005 was 61% which is 2.4% below the Kansas State Average of 63.4%.

Only 31.9% of the students with special needs scored proficient or above.

Only 51.9% of the students of poverty scored proficient

Why Literacy First?

Is flexible and can be customized to meet the needs of our staff and students

• 5 days of explicit reading instruction each year for Intensive Reading teachers

• 5 days of explicit reading instruction each year for Content Area teachers

• 8 days of on-site consultation with Literacy First consultant

Our Current Data

• Approximately 60 students at each grade level are enrolled in a 90 minute Reading Block

• 45 minutes of whole group reading instruction

• 45 minutes of small group reading instruction with a student/teacher ratio of approximately 6:1
