Welcome to another edition of Newsletter
May 2016
Dear Families, we would like to start by welcoming the families who have recently
joined our centre. It is a pleasure to have you in our centre and we hope you and
your children are enjoying your time in our centre.
I wish all Mother’s a Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday 8th
of May. I am sure your
beautiful children will ensure this day is very special for you! The children have
created beautiful Mother’s Day presents, one for you to keep forever. The children
are so excited to present you with their creative gift. I take the opportunity to thank
the staff for dedicating extra time to assist the children to create these masterpieces
– we hope you enjoy them!
Contagious Illnesses and Diseases
We aim to minimize cross infection at the centre and to do this, we need your help!
If your child has developed a contagious illness (Gastro, conjunctivitis, impetigo,
head lice etc) the exclusion period will be as per the Staying Healthy in Childcare
Manual located in the front foyer. You will also need to obtain a medical clearance
certificate before returning to the centre and provide this to the Office on your
child’s first day back. If your child develops a temperature or diarrhea, there is a
24 hour exclusion period or until they are well before you can return. By
implementing these guidelines, we aim to keep all our children safe and minimize
the amount of infectious diseases we have at the centre.

Hello Kuula Families,
Hello to all of our wonderful families as we fast approach the middle of the year –
how the time has flown as we move into the colder months!
What have we been up to?
It has been another busy month in the Kuula room with the children engaging in a
variety of both indoor and outdoor activities. We have been getting up to the
sensory garden and sometimes the Pilta yard as much as possible before the cold
weather sets in. It gives the children the opportunity to experience the natural
environment and often allows them to interact with the Pilta children. This is of
particular benefit to some of our older children as they will be transitioning soon.
To celebrate Mother’s Day the children, with a bit of help from staff, have been
decorating little jars with glitter and collage before placing a lovely scented tea-
light candle inside, just a small memento but we’re sure our mums will love them.
There has been a lot of make-believe play, especially with the older children who
have really enjoyed our new ‘muppet’ puppets (Although some were a little wary
at first!) as well as wrapping our dolls, taking them for a walk in the pram and
saying “bye bye”
And now for a spot of housekeeping…..
As the weather starts to get chilly please make sure that your child has plenty of
warm clothes - including spare socks as the ground is sometimes wet – as we still
like to get outside when we can.
We would like to bid a fond farewell to Henry and Milo who have just finished
transitioning to the Pilta room – have fun lads, we’ll miss you!
Have a great month – cheers until next time, Sofie, Grace, Aprajita, Kate and
Catherine.
PILTA NEWS
Whilst we have been enjoying a beautiful Indian summer, the cold, wet, windy
weather is just around the corner. The change of season means appropriate
clothing. Warm jackets and foot wear are essential items of clothing as the children
still engage in the outdoor environment even if the weather is slightly inclement.
Our TERM 2 programme will continue in the same format, consisting of 5
principal headings. Please peruse the programming wall; this will give you
information and insight into the terms planning.
If you could assist in us in anyway with resources that will support the programme,
please let us know. These could include small lengths of smooth timber, PVC
piping, rope, clean sand, dirt, rocks , fabric, hats, shoes, clothing, obsolete
technology(batteries removed) and anyone with musical prowess (Jane and
Rachel’s harmonies, spoon playing, awkward yoga moves and the infamous plastic
bag dance are wearing a tad thin)
Within the Pilta room there is a strong focus on self-help and fostering
independence. The children are encouraged to be aware of their property and
looking after personal items. Putting on, with aid if required clothing and shoes,
self-serving of meals, helping peers and younger Pilta friends with transitions and
routines. These actions engage the child, makes them feel capable and important,
instils a strong sense of belonging and builds dispositions such as confidence,
persistence and resilience
Quite a few of our Pilta friends are undertaking toileting at the moment. An email
will be sent out containing an information sheet entitled “Toileting your Toddler”
and additional handy hints. If you have any hints and tips that have been successful
for you and your child, please let us know so we can include them in the next
newsletter.
The past few months the children have been enjoying particular songs and stories;
BOOKS
Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi
Yummy and Yucky by Leslie Patricelli
We’re going on a croc hunt by Laine Mitchell and Louis Shea

TARNDA NEWS
Welcome to our new friends Elroy and Evie and their families. We look forward to
getting to know you.
We have been busy in the Tarnda room talking about the journey of our bins
(waste, recycling and green organics). The children have been keen to talk about
their red, yellow & green bins at home and what they do with them.
Protecting our environment and saving our earth from pollution should be taught to
children at a young age – Earth Day is every day
We would appreciate any large or small plastic bottles and small jars for the
children to recycle into craft items .The children have enjoyed using the Early
Recycle activity. By putting the pictures into the recycle bins according to the
appropriate categories, the children will be learning to reduce waste and to recycle.
This is our popular recycling song:
Save, save, save the cans
throw the in the bin
We can help to save the earth
If we all pitch in
Save, save, save the paper
throw them in the bin
We can help to save the earth
If we all pitch in
Save, save, save the bottles
throw them in the bin
We can help to save the earth
If we all pitch in
Save, save, save the plastic
throw them in the bin
We can help to save the earth
If we all pitch in
As part of our Art Classes the children had lots of fun threading to make their
necklaces with bits and pieces
The Tarnda children would like to thank Raul (Samuels’s dad) for coming in to
read a story. The children really enjoyed the story.
Please feel free to come in and read a story, sing a song, cook, dance, share your
culture. All welcome, come and chat to the staff.
Making Treasure Maps
The children have had a great time making treasure maps, then going out to look
for their hidden treasures, this experience has help them to explore their
imagination and improve their social skills as they had to work with friends to
follow and find the treasure.
A few friendly reminders
From the 1st May to 1
st August sunscreen will not be applied, however the children
will still need to wear a hat. Could you please make sure your child has a suitable
hat. All children’s belongings and spare clothes to be clearly labelled with child’s
name. Please bring a piece of fruit each day to share at morning tea. No Apples or
cut fruit. No food or beverages to be kept in your child’s bag
Until next time Jacinta, Leanne, Angie and Sarma.
The Centre has a nutrition policy based on the Commonwealth Department
Of Health guidelines. The centre has been awarded a Start Right Eat Right
certificate in recognition of the centre’s provision of appropriate nutrition for
young children.
Parents are requested to supply one medium size piece of fruit/or equivalent
quantity of dried fruit per day per child. Please note the centre is unable to accept
apples as it’s a potential choking hazard (KidSafe SA)
For children attending 3 or more days per week parents may alternatively bring
one whole piece of fruit eg. A pineapple or rock melon or a packet of sultanas.
This allows each child to contribute someting they like to eat.
