CLUB NEWS from our PresidentHi Everyone
Well we’ve had another A.G.M. for the year and we have two new committee members in Robert Sexton and Tarlee Schultz (my daughter). Welcome to both of them. It’s great to have new members on board with fresh ideas. We still have one more vacancy on the general committee if anyone is interested. Merv Jackson is now our treasurer and Russell Byrne is now Vice President. We all thank Graham Silvy very much for the great job he did with the treasury whilst he was with us and we wish him all the very best with his and his family’s future. A big thank you also to the outgoing committee members, Helen Whelan and Jenny Englehardt.
Our dear ex President John Turner has been very much on the sick list having had major heart surgery. We pray he will very soon be on the mend. My dear Mum-in-law Myra Smith, who is a member of our club has also been in the wards having had a couple of falls, (I’m going to have to hide her bottle, HA, HA!). It’s not been a very good season for many of our members, health wise.
I nearly forgot to mention that at our A.G.M. Russell and Rhonda Byrne were voted by members to receive the club Merit Award and Ian Fisk was presented with the club Industry Award. They all very much deserve these awards.
Well bye for now,
Thanks God for Country Music. Di Smith (President)
There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group, there’s less competition.

August 2008 After the A.G.M. Carole Sturtzel and Wild Oats put on a wonderful performance. The dance floor was fully occupied most of the time. The turnout was good. All there had a great day!The ever popular Victorian Chooka Williams was the guest artist for the day, as always he earned his money!
LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP
Hi everyone.
I missed the AGM through sickness, but heard it went well. Carole Sturtzel always performs well and of course Chooka Williams is always popular.
Our September show was very good with Allan Webster the Country Gentlemen. I believe Allan has one of the best country voices in Sth. Australia, he is also a very friendly funny man. His little jokes along the way were quite amusing. Thanks Allan and band for a lovely day.
I hope all the dads enjoyed their time at the club.
Special guests artists Lee Brocky and Ben Furnell also entertained us. Lee has the band Outback Overdrive.

Young 10 year old Eliza Parker came along to sing a couple of songs. She has a lot to learn about choosing the right song, but that’s what we are the club are about, to help if we can. I had a little word with her. She sang for her dad! That’s special.
It was sad for me to announce the passing of Howard Michael, ‘Ardyakka Park’, Berri. He was 69. We first met
when he was 16 years old. He was my late husband Len’s apprentice at the Islington Railway workshop. I opened the Mallee Fowl Restaurant about 12 years ago. Sorry I did not make Barmera this year when it was announced that he was very ill. Rest in Peace Howard, hope there is a Cowboy Heaven for you and Len to meet up again. Lorraine
in the next couple of months. Maryanne is an accredited song-writer with APRA and many of her original songs are performed at the gigs and are well received. Brad, our accomplished bass guitarist, is also a skilled song-writer, so the new album will contain all originals. We are looking forward to recording again.

October Show:- Maryanne & Co.Maryanne & Co were established in 1992 and decided to focus on country music in 1993. We have played many quality venues and with a wide range of artists. Some of our more prominent gigs have included playing for The South Australian Tourism Awards, The Olympic Torch Ceremony and The Year of the Outback Cattle Drive. We have also been support act for Lee Kernaghan, Gina Jefferies, Craig Giles, Johnny Mac and Slim Dusty (at one of his last major concerts) as well as working with many prominent artists around the country. For the last 7 years, Maryanne & Co have a standing gig at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and play for the entire 10 days of the Festival.
We thoroughly enjoy working the South Australian Country Music clubs as we always know that the people attending are there only to hear country music, which is our love.
Our debut album ‘Table for Two’ was released in January 06 and has been very popular. We are currently working on a new album and hope to go into the recording studio

A great weekend was had by all, the numbers were not quite up to the limit of 200, but a considerable amount was raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Friday evening session was not as well attended as Saturday. This led to a more intimate evening. On the whole the music was good on the weekend, no big star
Woolshed Dinner Dance at Bungaree Station weekend of August 15 - 17attractions but a great opportunity to catch up with other country music lovers. A great meal was served on the Saturday evening. It was a cold wet weekend, but nice and dry in the woolshed (though a bit on the nose near the stalls!) If one dressed

November show - Creole cowboyZThe Creole cowboyZ (Yes, they’re still spelling it like that!) have spent over three years playing their signature ‘Gator Music’, inspired by Creole French traditions of Southern Louisiana.
After a break in the earlier part of this year when some members were travelling, the six-piece cowboyZ are back in force with new inductee Brent ‘Bayou’ Miller, alternating between Electric bass and Mandolin.
While still incorporating all their multi-instrumental mayhem with a mix of Cajun French Button Accordions, Frottoir (pronounced ‘frott-waah’) also known as the Zydeco Rub-board, Piano accordion, Keyboard, Guitars, Mandolin, Banjo, Harp and even a Didgeridoo, this lineup change has further broadened their repertoire of tightly-mixed Cajun-Zydeco, Country Rock, Bluegrass and New Orleans Blues.
Their new sound has also provided the opportunity to feature the talents of the individual boyZ, with many more solos and musical variations in the mix…‘Jambalaya’ John gets to occasionally get off his drum-kit and play bass and sing, ‘Gumbo’ Pete gets to play a whole lot more guitar, “Buckwheat” Steve gets even more out of his collection of accordions and gravel-throat vocals, and ‘Scrubber’ Pete has added extra sound effects and stage props to his incredible rub-board playing…you really have to keep your eye on that end of the stage to figure out what might be happening next!!
There are many new songs in their non-stop musical treat, but the cowboyZ have kept their infectious blend of humour and danceable enjoyment, in fact they insist that
if you ain’t dancin’, you just ain’t list’nin! It’s nothing to find some of the boyZ on the floor, mixing it with the dancers in the middle of a number…
Many of their old favourites still make it to the set list, and as ‘Dixie’ Darryl says “We don’t seem to able to ever stop playing that Chicken Song! It’s become our signature tune!” True to their word, the cowboyZ included it as a video clip on their ‘Live & Kickin’ CD/DVD combo released last year, and available at their gigs.
They even have a regular electronic newsletter called ‘BoyZ-NoyZ’ that details all their up-coming gigs and is peppered with their own mad-cap brand of humour and off-the-wall trivia; you can register for their mailing list and become part of the fun by sending an email to: [email protected]
Contact details, music and video clips for the band, gig guides and a blog are all on their website:

Frankie Baker UpdateFrank has had quite a year, driving issues, a heart attack, trip to the Gympie Muster and having to move because a house fire.
He reported that he had a wonderful time in Gympie attending at least 43 different events. He reckoned it was ‘Cowboy Heaven’ there! As well as seeing many South Australia artists there (including Talia Wittmann, Brad Bergen, Dave Prior, the Wegeners, Anthony Stewart, Danny Hooper, The Rustlers and Kristy Cox) he managed to see many others including 8 Ball Aitken, Billy Bridges and his family, Matt Manning, Anita Ree, Slim Dusty Family and the Sunny Cowgirls.
He was not home long before he was forced to change his digs. A fire completely gutted the unit above his resulting in extensive water and smoke damage to his unit. He has since been staying at two different places and is still looking for something more permanent.
Frank wanted to thank all those who have rung with offers of support during these challenging times!
He is having another birthday at the end of October.
I am sure we all hope that his next year is less eventful!

Those who appeared included Kristal Collins, Slim Connor, Chooka Williams, Tiffney Stroh, Guido Davis, Limestone Balladeers, Compact Country, Cobby Bob, Cross Country,
Lee Brocky & Outback Overdrive and JJ the DJ.
Thanks to the Royal Flying Doctors Bungaree Station support group and Outback Wings on their inaugural well organised show.
Due to some committee members being away at Mildura and Semaphore Music Festivals the Club would appreciate help from members in setting up and putting things away after the October meeting. Please arrive by

Ben Harris and the Kapunda Cancer Fund RaiserBen won a number of awards including:- SA Champion of Champions Under 16 Award 2000 and 2001 and Len Wakefield Memorial Award 2001.He has appeared at Barmera and done several walk up appearances at the Adelaide Country Music Club and the Southern Country Music Club.He has also appeared at clubs with his Band ‘The Wranglers’.I have often wondered what Ben was up to now. At the Kapunda Cancer Fund Raiser on September 6th someone pointed out a person saying he was Ben. When you see the picture you will see why some did not recognize him!Ben was in a rock band for a while. He has been in the butchering industry for seven years. Earlier this year he opened ‘Beno’s Family Meats’ at Kapunda. His sister Susan sang a few numbers on the day. She sounded great, her husband, Scott and Ben supplied the sound equipment and operated it for the day. Scott also drummed for several bands! The three of them also combined in various enjoyable combinations. The day was not well attended but that made for a more intimate experience with all being able to mix more easily. One of the bands advertised to attend did not show, but that was more than compensated by the others with surprise walk-ups by Ben, Susan and Scott and also by Ian List and Bruce Donald of the Phoenix band.Other appearing included Cross Country, Jay J Shannon and Winchester, Compact Country, David Croser, Chooka Williams, Guido Davis and Taylor Pfeiffer plus JJ the DJ. The Blanchetown group also entertained ie Rodney and Ferdy Noll, Dean Shubert
As noted in the last Country Call, Johnny and Carole appeared at a number of metropolitan venues as part of the Out of the Square Matinee Series Senior’s circuit sponsored by ArtsSA. I managed to fit in a show at the Star Theatre
Johnny, Carole and the band put on a very entertaining show.

and Trevor Kuntz.
The weather was warm and dry during the day, but a bit cool in the evening.
Thanks must go to Heather Smith of Cross Country for organizing the artists. She and Reg are leaving the state in October, good luck to you both in your travels.
Jeff Rattew (JJ the DJ) will be involved in the organization for next year’s function.

Georgette began singing at Our Lady of the River Catholic School in Berri as part of the year five school choir. This progressed to performing at the associated Catholic Church singing at school mass, reconciliation & confirmation etc. and school performances. Opportunities arose from this exposure and her first public singing performance was in 2005 at the Berri Lions Club change over dinner. Georgette was subsequently invited to perform at the Renmark Carols by Candle light at which this year will be her third appearance. In 2006 encouraged by family and friends she decided to exhibit her musical talents to a wider audience by entering into a number of Country music talent quests including Mildura, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Tailem Bend and Barmera. A number of placings were gained throughout these appearances. Georgette was special guest at the Christmas function of ‘Toomstone Country’ in Teasdale west of Geelong in 2007. She was also a finalist in the 2007 Victorian Champion of Champions. She was one of three finalists in the 2008 South Australian Champion of Champions and was privileged to be awarded the ‘Len Wakefield Memorial’ Trophy by the Adelaide Country Music Club.A very successful Riverland Country Music Festival saw Georgette receive the much coverted “Frank Harding Memorial” South Australian Award of Excellence.
Georgette Berry Profile
Georgette also performed for the second year, a duet of the National Anthem at the Riverland Football Grand Final.
Georgette performs locally at clubs private functions and charity events and is part of plans to form a country rock group over the coming months.
A year 10 student at Loxton High School Georgette includes music as one of her goals for a future career.
