It is important to note that affordable housing is not cheap housing. In order to comply with the standards set by the Affordable Housing Innovations Unit, dwellings which claim to be affordable must not only meet the financial affordability criteria, but must also be in keeping with surrounding residences, be of quality construction and be designed to be energy and water efficient to decrease ongoing costs. Ideally, they should also be close to services and public transport, not in fringe developments.
