In nearly all fields of application in processing industries, adhesives can substitute or supplementthe traditional joining processes such as welding, riveting or screwing. More than any otherprocess, adhesive bonding technology can make it possible to fix the most dissimilar materialstogether permanently, without damaging the joining parts and thus impairing their stability.

As a result of rising production demands and high environmental awareness, adhesives havebecome high-tech products, which have for a long time been accepted in highly sensitiveindustries such as aviation and space technology. Advantages such as weight reduction, fasterassembly and more cost effective production, through short contact times and ease of applicationwith state-of-the art measuring technology, are constantly opening up new application fields forthis innovative method of fixing.

As a leading supplier of structural reaction adhesives, Bodo Möller Chemie offers a broad andcomprehensive range of solvent-free industrial adhesives.

The wide variety of demands made on adhesive systems and thenature of the components to be joined, make it necessary to buildup solid know-how in application technology. Bodo Möller Chemierecognised early on that no customer specific solution can bedeveloped without very good application technology.Today Bodo Möller Chemie possesses not only a well balancedproduct portfolio and a regionally deployed technical sales team, but also an in-house application laboratory, so that we can offer afull range of technical adhesive solutions.

Epoxy adhesives (EP)

With these adhesives we can offer systems with a sheer strengthof up to 40 Mpa as well as a peel resistance of up to 10 N/mm.They are therefore used as the adhesive of choice for extra-strongbonding in craft and industrial fields. These levels of strength canbe further increased by the application of heat, and can thendemonstrate temperature resistance from –30° to +120° C.

1-component epoxy resins

EP single-component systems are heatcuring and are primarily used whenhigh strength or high crash-strengthare required, as well as ease ofworking. In 1-K systems the resin andhardener lie side by side in themixture. The hardener is non-solubleat room temperature and dissolvesonly when heat is applied, whichinitiates the curing process. Theadvantage of this system is the simpleapplication handling, as well as thefact that the operator does not have toperform the mixing and dosingmeasurement. Our 1-K epoxy resinspossess an excellent long termdurability coupled with high resi-stance to temperature changes.

BETAMATE™ 1-component epoxystructural adhesivesystems

2-component epoxy resins

EP 2-component systems harden atboth cold and warm temperatures. The application of heat can reduce thecuring time. Heat increases theinterlocking density; the final strengthtends to increase and stays at a some-what higher level. In 2-componentepoxy resin systems the workingqualities of both components areadjusted to each other and are user-friendly. The dosage proportions aregiven by the manufacturer and can notbe varied. The dosing, mixing andapplication can be done by hand ormechanically. The variable curing timeand the continuously adjustedreactivity of the adhesive make2-component epoxy adhesive systemsas excellent problem-solvers wheremetals are used in the transportationsector or aircraft construction.

2-component polyurethanes

The dual-component adhesives consist of the polyol components (A) and theisocyanate components (B) and have to be mixed and worked in fixedproportions. The adhesives are also available as highly inflammable systems. The adhesive layer of 2-component polyurethane systems hardens to a toughrigidity or a rubbery elasticity, depending on the proportion of raw materialsused. We supply systems with a curing time ranging from 2 to 120 minutes, available in viscosities from volatile to highly viscous. Dual-component PURadhesives suit perfectly to flat-surface bonding in vehicle construction, claddingand in shipbuilding. Other appropriate applications are, for example, high-valueassembly bonding, plastics bonding, right-angle bonding, and also for use ascastings or as adhesive for SMC building components.

Polyurethane structural adhesives (PUR)

This type of polyurethane-based adhesive can also be obtainedby our customers as a 1-component or a 2-component system.Polyurethane systems can harden to form elastomers orduromers; here the degree of interlinking and thus the strengthis determined by the different raw materials, which are finallycontained in the adhesive systems. We offer a wide range ofapplications from flexible to high rigidity both in 1-componentand 2-component systems.

1-component polyurethanes

The single-component adhesivesconsist of prepolymers containingisocyanates, which harden whenmoistened. This reaction can takeplace in a temperature range from 5°to 40° C., but a relative humidity of40% to 70% is necessary. Afterhardening, the adhesive joint has theelasticity of rubber. These systems areideal when using materials that have alarge variation in the rate of expansionunder temperature and load, as forexample in fixing windows in vehicles,or bonding GFK glass-fibre-parts tosteel, and aluminium parts to a steelsubstrate. In the European automotiveindustry BETASEAL™ systems are themarket leaders both for direct glazingof vehicles and for glazing repair. In addition to the appropriateadhesive systems, we offer all thenecessary products for preparationand finishing, as well as theaccessories required for the use ofthese proven window-fixing systems.

Methacrylate adhesives (MMA)

MMA adhesives are reaction adhesives based on methacryl acid esters. The curing of the reactivesystems takes place on the principle of radical chain polymerisation. With the quick hardening MMAadhesives, sheer strengths until 30 Mpa and above are achievable before ageing. In many cases, functional rigidity of 5 Mpa can be achieved after only 5 minutes.

2-component methacrylates

MMA adhesives harden to formthermoplasts and demonstrate goodadhesion properties on plastics andmetals, while being relativelyinsensitive to slightly greasy surfaces. These adhesives are generallyrequired in twin-chamber cartridgeswith static mixing-tube for quick andeasy application. For quantityproduction in large volume we do ofcourse deliver the differentcomponents separately. Typical fieldsof application for these high-performance adhesives are the vehicleand railway construction industries.

Phenol resins /Polycondensation adhesives

Depending on their composition, phenol resins harden at temperaturesbetween 140° and 200° C. The harde-ning process for phenol resins abso-lutely requires a temperature higherthan 100° C. Phenol resins aredistinguished by high adhesivestability and good mechanical pro-perties. Furthermore they show goodheat-resistance up to around 250° C.Phenol resins are ideal in applicationswhere the adhesive layer is subject to

high temperature and wheresafety considerations are apriority. Typical applications arethe bonding of brake- and clutch-linings in vehicle construction.

Cyanoacrylate adhesives

Cyanoacrylates are one-part adhesives and have beendesigned to cure by reacting to small traces of surfacemoisture. Cyanoacrylates cure within few seconds atroom temperature. Cyanoacrylates provide excellentbonding performance whether you are bonding metals, plastics or rubber. Materials which will be normallybond with difficulties as for example: POM, PP, PE, PET,EPDM or silicons can be bond very well with cyano-acrylates. As pre-treatment for these materials werecommend the "Permabond® polyolefin primer".

Anaerobic adhesives

Anaerobic adhesives are used as1-component-system. Assignedmonomers of (modified) acrylic acidesters harden out like the methyl-methacrylates by a radical chainmechanism. The curing process is onlypossible under exclusion of oxygen(anaerobic). This mechanism results atthe same time in the main application. If anaerobic adhesives are used in aclose metal gap by exclusion ofoxygen, the hardening will be initia-ted. This enables long open times.Typical applications are retaining, threadlocking, pipe sealing andgasketing.

Permabond® Anaerobic adhesives

UV-curing adhesives

These 1-component adhesives cure by a radical polymerisation. The impor-tant formation of the starting radicals is caused by the irradiation with UVlight. The curing takes place afterwards within seconds. Our customers canbenefit from our overall experience in bonding industrial parts together. We offer a complete solution for all your applications in the field of industrialbonding. The Single-part adhesive chemistry allows rapid preparation andapplication cure. Our Permabond® UV-curable adhesives are excellent forbonding glass to glass or glass to metal and for plastic applications. The increasing importance UV curing systems is clear regarding the manyadvantages: work safety, high assembly rates, short curing, curing ondemand to allow proper alignment of components before bonding, solventfree and not flammable, environmentally friendly.
