NOVARES resins allow the formulator to produce an adhesive with optimum properties andoffer the following advantages: improvement of adhesion properties and heat resistance increase of hot tack control of melt viscosity adjustment of open time

Typical hot melt application areas in whichNOVARES are successfully used are: .

edge banding profile wrapping surface lamination assembly

Adhesives are subjected to a variety of conditions, e.g. humidity and temperature fluctuations

in kitchen, bath and outdoor areas. Also stress in edge banding requires high quality products.NOVARES resins are well established and ensure a good bond.

Due to their very good compatibility with EVA-copolymers even at high resin softening pointsup to 160C, NOVARES TNgrades are the resins of first choice in hot melt adhesives for wood-working applications.

Paper and Packaging Hot melt Adhesives

The equipment in the paper and packagingindustry operates with high speed cycle timeand therefore there are many demands on theadhesives. The adhesive has to form a quickbond and must not break under stress. Otherchallenges to the adhesive are differentsubstrates and surfaces. The adhesives havean important influence on the stability anddurability of the packaging.

Resin are commonly used to improve hot tack control melt viscosity adjust open time

Aliphatically modified aromatic NOVARES TKresins are especially recommended astackifiers for hot melts used for paper andpackaging applications.

In dispersion adhesive systems based on acrylic, PVAc, VAE and SBRNOVARES resins have taken a strong position. Ageing resistance and alow emission value in the formulation are requirements which have to befulfilled by modifiers. The liquid resins NOVARES LS 500and LX 200arepopular solubilisers and carriers for resins used in dispersion adhesiveformulations. They can be used to replace solvents and plasticisers withthe advantage of having a lower proportion of volatile components.LS 500and LX 200can assist in the formulation of dispersion adhesiveswhich meet EC1 requirements.

By using NOVARES LS 500 in acrylic based adhesives a clear improvement of the peel strength, wet tack and dry tack is shown.

NOVARES Resins for Solvent borne Adhesives

Due to their good tack and processing pro-perties giving secure and durable bondings, solvent based adhesives are still being used.

NOVARES resins offer the following advan-tages in solvent borne adhesives, e.g. basedon PVAc, polychloroprene, SBR:

    adjustment of open time

    lower processing viscosity

    improved adhesion and cohesion

    improved heat resistance

For the manufacture of parquet adhesives

    especially

NOVARES TNA 80and TNA 90resinsare recommended.

    These resins are characterised by

good compatibility with polar polymers(PVAc) because of their modification withphenol

    improvement of adhesion

    increase of cohesiveness and thermalplasticity

positive effect on the pseudo plasticity

increase of oxidation and ageing resistancein comparision with natural resins

    increase of hydrophobic character.

NOVARES Resins for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) are permanentlytacky products, which achieve a bond under lightcontact pressure. A PSA is able to carry forward forcesup to a certain level. The cohesion of that adhesivecan be improved by using high melting NOVARESresins, e.g. C 160, TN 160and TN 170. These resinsare endblock-reinforcers in PSA on the basis of styrenic

block copolymers like SIS, SBS und SEBS. .They improve heat stability shear resistance softening point of the formulation

NOVARES resins do not display any tendency to re-crystallise and can reduce or inhibit thetendency of natural resins to crystallise in compounds.

NOVARES resins are distinguished by the diversity of their chemical composition and their widerange of softening points. This diagram shows NOVARES resin types according to their softeningpoint and their increasing aliphatic character.

The NOVARES C series are typical indene coumarone resins. NOVARES TT resins are producedby the polymerisation of the petro-based aromatic C9-fraction and are the standard resins foradhesive industry.Tailor made resins which have influence on compatibility and solubility can be produced by: targeted combinations of aromatic monomers (NOVARES TN, TL, TM, TX) modification with aliphatic monomers (NOVARES TK, TS, TP, TR) modification with phenol (NOVARES TNA, TA, TMA)

The adhesive producer can select his tailor made resin for his specific formulation from a wideand comprehensive range of NOVARES types.
