Danny is a longtime crowd favorite at Paddlefest. This year he has added new demos, so be sure you don’t miss him!• Choosing the Perfect Kayak Paddle: Join

kayak instructor Danny Mongno as he starts you on this quest to paddle more efficiently! Starting with the paddle, we will define low angle and high angle paddling, paddle fit options, proper lengths and prescribe the perfect fitting paddle for each individual. From there we will dissect some every day strokes and see how, along with matching a better fitting paddle, you will be using less energy and have more fun on the water. Whether you are a sea kayaker, fisherman or quietly exploring the waters in your back yard, this seminar will talk to you.

• Easier Paddling for all Skill Levels: Join Werner Paddles kayak instructor, Danny Mongno, as he helps you to develop a more relaxing and more effi-cient set of techniques to use in your kayak. In the end, no matter what kind of kayaker you are, you will be using less energy, spending more time on the water and enjoying yourself more. This is an interactive seminar, so be ready to follow along with Danny while he demonstrates these skills on the water and above all have some fun.

Liquidlogic KayaksWoody Callaway

Woody was one of the first southern boaters to embrace Squirt boating and was the first squirt boater to hand pad-dle the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon back in the start of modern freestyle kayaking.• Importance of Seat Comfort in Choosing

a Kayak: Nobody knows seat comfort in a kayak like Woody because few have spent the years of dedication to kayak like Woody. Come by the Liquidlogic and Native Watercraft booth to hear Woody explain the Importance of Seat Comfort in Choosing a Kayak. ¬You are certain to leave with excellent information in choosing a kayak and Woody’s charm and southern grace will put a grin on your face as well.

Matt YablonowskiMatt first discovered his paddling passion about 12 years ago while exploring Northern California’s “Lost Coast‚“ and the Lake Tahoe region. His paddling adventures have taken him to the Pacific Northwest, around the Statue of Liberty, thru downtown Chicago, and to the Abel Tasman Sea off the coast of New Zealand. Currently living in Vermont, the New Eng-land seacoast has now become his pre-ferred playground for touring and coastal surf. Matt is currently a Northeast Sales Representative for Conflu-ence Watersports.• Choosing the Right Kayak: With an overwhelming number of

possibilities in boat designs and features, choosing the right kayak or canoe can be a challenge these days. Let’s overcome that chal-lenge as we look at each category and investigate which boat is the best option for you.

Swift Canoe & Kayak David Yost and Bill Swift

Bill Swift is one of those lucky one’s who grew up with parents that owned both a canoe tripping camp and a canoe rental operation in Algonquin Park, Ontario. Bill founded Swift Canoe & Kayak in 1989 and still is still at the helm today. David Yost may be the most versatile and prolific designer of human-powered watercraft today. His philosophy, that canoes should be adapted to the needs of people rather than adapting people to the canoe, has

led to a devoted following. Design and Construction: David will start the Clinic by describing how Swift takes a boat from design concept to the point where it is ready to put into production. He will discuss what to look for in today’s boat market. Swift will follow with a discussion on Modern Boat Building Materi-

als and Construction methods. Bill will review current boat building materials including Polyethylene, Thermoformed Plastics and Composite Materials.

Skip TaylorSkip’s passion for Paddlesports grew out of attending clinics in the era of Harry Roberts, Mike Galt, Dave Curtis and David Yost.• Solo Canoe Choices: This is an entertaining and in-

teractive demonstration of Canoeing Solo in a Tandem Canoe, Solo Canoe and Pack Canoe. We will go through solo paddling a Canadian style Prospector Canoe, a sleek American style Solo Canoe and a lightweight Pack Canoe. We will discuss the pros and cons of each and demonstrate the best ways of paddling and portaging each of these boats.

Karen BreerKaren has prior certification from the ACA, CRCA (Canadian Recreational Canoe Association) and AECSKO (Assoc. of Eastern Canadian Sea Kayak Outfitters). • Women’s Kayaking: Karen’s Clinic will cover kayak equipment that has been

designed specifically for women’s needs. She will cover the importance of lightweight kayaks and paddles. Karen show you to handle you boat on and off the water and how to load it on to your car by yourself! Karen also touches on properly fitting women’s specific life jackets and other new equipment!

Boardworks SUPsGreg Weber

I have been surfing since the 60s and began sup-ping five years ago. The people and shops I’ve been exposed to thru SUP, especially the excitement of someone’s first paddle, make repping and demoing my dream lifestyle job choice.• Which SUP is for you? I think the most exciting

and important part of SUP is being out there those first few times. The Board-works models here at the show will take you from your first paddle thru fitness and into race with confidence and fun! The first SUP you own doesn’t need to be something you trade in. Your first board should be one you can lend to a friend and still enjoy the stability yourself whenever conditions warrant.

Pyranha KayaksMatt Young

Matt, a Team Pyranha Paddler, is a passionate, lifelong paddler who hails from Lake Placid, New York. He has experience in freestyle, downriver racing, and extreme racing. His most recent passion involves multi-day expedition paddling.• River Touring with Crossover Boats: A perfect match for Adiron-

dack Waterways: Crossover, or “hybrid” boats combine the maneuverability of a whitewater kayak with the speed and tracking of a touring kayak. Matt will cover all of the features that make these boats so versatile, the right gear, how to pack one for an overnight, and the best places in the Adirondack region to paddle.

Terry KentTerry picked up paddling at a young age and had a competitive career in Sprint Kayaking that culminated in a World Championship silver medal.• Kayaking 101: In his role as Sales for Swift Canoe

and Kayak, Terry has put hundreds of new paddlers into kayaks for the first time. Terry will talk about the most common mistakes made by beginners and demonstrate the easy tips to correct them.

Charlie WilsonCharlie formerly chaired the American Canoe Associa-tion’s Instruction Council, was instrumental in develop-ing current FreeStyle technique and has written and contributed to several books and magazine articles on canoeing skills. He has been a principle in both Bell Ca-noe Works and Placid Boatworks and currently consults with Swift Canoe and Kayak on infusion technology.• Tandem Canoeing Skills: Charlie will present an overview of tandem

canoeing skills. After discussing paddle physics and bio-mechanics, the clinic emphasizes basic directional control for sitting paddlers using Sit and Switch Technique, before progressing to more advanced kneeling techniques includ-ing skidded turns, sideslips and efficient forward travel without correctional effort. Use of both bent and straight paddles is addressed.

Old Forge, New York is a prime spot for Adirondack fun and activity. Out-door or indoor, summer or winter, there’s always plenty to do here, no matter how you define “vacation”. Old Forge is easily accessible from most of New York State, and cap-tures the best of both worlds; this bustling town boasts a wide variety

of restaurants and shopping oppor-tunities yet lies close enough to the wilderness that a truly personal ex-perience with nature is never out of reach. One of the most popular ways to get that experience is by paddling a canoe or a kayak on one of the ar-ea’s many waterways.

When you take a winding trip down the Moose River, you’ll find yourself winding down as well. One

of the greatest things about pad-dling is that provides a way to get to places that can’t be reached by boat or by car, or even on foot. And nature is close here; you’re likely to find deer rustling through the bushes, or a heron swooping grace-fully into the water. If you’re lucky, you may spot a playful otter duck-ing under water, or a moose grazing on the shore. It’s easy to forget the

world as you paddle by lush, plant-studded banks and towering pines. On a beautiful day, nothing is more refreshing than stopping on a sandy riverbank to take a swim, or spread-ing out a picnic blanket and sipping a cold drink as you lounge. The view of the mountains in the distance, their green peaks stretching up to the clear blue sky, will transport you to a different time and place, where

all that matters is the sunshine on your face, the cool water beneath you, and the beauty of nature that surrounds you.

In this peaceful, beautiful atmo-sphere, you’ll never want your pad-dling experience to end. The good news is it doesn’t have to. Old Forge offers paddlers access to some of the most diverse and gorgeous wa-terways in the Adirondacks. With flat and whitewater, lakes and rivers, and all manner of scenery the pad-dling opportunities here are end-less. Trips ranging from a few hours to a few weeks are possible, and the variety of overnight options from lean-tos to charming bed and break-fasts, make it easy to customize your trip. Sites like Alger Island provide great canoe camping opportuni-ties, with just the right amount of

paddling and the chance to spend a night under the stars by the warm glow of a campfire, miles away from street lights and car horns. If a few weeks on the water isn’t enough, you can head out for a few months. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail, a 740-mile route composed of 22 riv-ers and 56 lakes and ponds, starts in Old Forge and winds through the most breathtaking wilderness in New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Quebec, including three national wildlife refuges.

Not an experienced paddler? Nev-er even seen a kayak before? Don’t worry. From rentals to lessons, Old Forge has no shortage of resources that can get you on the water fast. Paddling is truly one of the most ver-satile recreational options around; just about anyone can learn to ca-

This sport is an excellent cardio workout but doesn’t require beginners to over-exert themselves, making it easy and enjoyable to build up strength and endurance while keeping the strain off knees and joints. For this reason, paddling is popular with people of every age and demographic. Once

you get the hang of it, you can customize your paddling experi-ence by varying the length, speed and waterways of your trips; Old Forge’s close proximity to different lakes, streams, and rivers makes it easy to change up your routine and have a blast testing out differ-ent types of trips.

Whether you’ve paddled the ar-ea’s waterways or just want to get some legwork in, a hike to the top of a mountain offers a new perspective on familiar territory and an incred-ible feeling of being on top of the world. Many hikes in the Old Forge area are close to town and easily ac-cessible, but the all-encompassing presence of nature makes you feel like you’re far away in the heart of

The Moss Lake trailhead is also the starting point for the trails to Bubb and Sis Lakes, 1.5 and 2.5 miles. Cascade Falls offers unparalleled views of a gorgeous waterfall, making it a different than the traditional Adirondack hike. The 2-mile trail to the lake and the 3-mile

trail to the falls are both rated ‘easy’ trails, and an intermediate-level spur trail continues 4.6 miles to Queer Lake. The popular Bald Mountain hike is a two-mile round trip on inter-mediate terrain that offers beautiful views of the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Bald Mountain shares a starting point with a variety of shorter trails; from the parking lot, it’s .3 miles to Fly Pond, .6 miles to Carry Pond, and

Groups with small children or less experienced hikers should find the .6 mile intermediate climb to the sum-mit of Rocky Mountain less challeng-ing, with a stellar view. Feeling ambi-tious? Climb both, and then reward yourself with ice cream cones from one of the local shops. Being close to town has its benefits.

In fact, there’s enough go-ing on in Old Forge that even people who cringe at the idea of lacing up a pair of hiking boots or strapping into a lifejacket will find plenty to do. There’s an incredible variety squeezed into a few miles in Old Forge. Main Street boasts gift shops, galleries, wine shops, clothing stores, and eateries ranging from sandwich shops to taverns to fine dining. The iconic Old Forge Hardware Store, a time-tested favorite, has more than just tools; look for everything from nuts and bolts to snacks and souve-nirs here. The Art Center has opened a brand new eco-friendly facility this year, where visitors can enjoy local art or sign up for a class. The Adiron-dack Scenic Railroad and Old Forge Lake Cruises allow everyone to enjoy the beauty of the Adirondacks, by land or by sea, without working up a sweat. Enchanted Forest Water Sa-fari offers one of the best water park experiences around for young and old alike. Throw in a sand beach for swimming, tennis courts, and pic-nic areas overlooking First Lake and you have the makings of a great va-cation. SUP Types and SizesThere are three basic types of SUPs. It is strongly advised that you speak to Mountainman’s knowledgeable staff before you buy one. The most versatile and popular SUP is a basic flatwa-ter model that is big, wide, and stable. (These boards can also be used to ride waves in the ocean.) There are also wave-riding and racing types. Mountainman car-ries a full line of flatwater models and can special order surf and racing models.

The heavier the rider is the larger the SUP should be. For instance, a 125 lb. paddler can easily han-dle a 10’ flat-water SUP, while a 200 lb. paddler would need a 12’ SUP. The 10’ SUP would sink with a heavier paddler, while the 12’ SUP would be unmanageable for a lighter paddler to carry and paddle. Mountainman’s staff can fit you with the correct size SUP.

SUP PaddlesSUP Paddles come in all shapes and sizes and it is important to get one that is either adjustable

New York’s Stand Up Paddleboard Headquarters!

The hottest new watersports craze to hit the U.S. mainland since surfing in the mid-1960s is coming to an upstate New York lake near you. It is called Stand-up Paddle Boarding and you can expect to see it throughout the summer, especially on the Fulton Chain of Lakes and vicinity.

What’s SUP? The Hottest New Watersport!By Peter Pan

Stand-up Paddle Boarding is a simple, easy-to-learn waters-port that is also a great full body workout. A SUP (Stand-up Paddle Board) is essentially an oversized surfboard that is specifically de-signed for use on both flatwater and surf. The volume of the surf-board makes it so that the rider is

able to stand up and paddle with both mobility and stability.

Advantages of SUPUsing a SUP as a touring craft on flatwater, you get to see much more from the higher vantage point in a standing position, as opposed to sitting down in a kay-ak or canoe. From a workout per-spective, you get the shoulders and arms involved, as well as the abs and legs. The paddler’s great-er range of mobility decreases the leg cramps and lower back issues that many paddlers experi-ence while kayaking or canoeing.

SUP is easy!SUP-ing will open up a whole new world and make the lakes more exciting than ever before. With the help of a competent instruc-tor, anyone can learn to ride these boards within minutes. Once you experience the thrill of SUP-ing, it will be difficult to return to a seat-ed boat. There is very little gear required for SUP-ing: a board, a PFD, a safety whistle, and a pad-dle. Just toss the board on the wa-ter, climb on, and go!

or sized to your specific height. The general rule is that the pad-dle should extend approximately one foot over the head of the rid-er while standing on the board. A wider paddle blade is better for flat water and racing, while a nar-row blade works better in surf.

Give SUP-ing a try!You owe it to yourself to try out this exciting new sport that has already taken off on both the west and east coasts of the main-land U.S. You can rent or test paddle a SUP and paddle right at Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company anytime.

Peter Pan is a professional surfing and SUP com-petitor, surfboard and SUP designer for both Bic Sport and Hobie Surfboards, and member of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. He is the current New England SUP flat water and surf riding Senior Men’s Pro Am Champion. He is the designer of both the 11’4” and 10’4” Peter Pan Bic Sport Stand-up Paddle Boards.

Over the past few years we’ve refined the ideal composite lay-up for SUP, with ACE-TEC as the result. Three sizes suit the needs of experienced riders and newbies alike with a unique combination of durability, light weight and performance shapes.

Boardworks EPX models are constructed of single density, stringerless, hand-shaped EPS cores with epoxy resin lamina-tions, painted with superior automotive grade paint and polish coat with a hand sanded finish. These boards are very user-friendly boards that are designed to surf and are great for

cruising as well. The perfect choice for entry level to advanced paddlers at an affordable price.Boardworks Soft Foam models are based on proven designs and constructed of premium Dow dense foam with a solid double fiberglass laminated stringer system and a 30ml slick skin bottom. The full template outline with natural rockers, foiled decks and ticked rails give these boards a performance enhanced smooth ride like no other foam boards!

Founded in 1989, Surftech was an early innovator in the windsurfing sport, then surfboards. Now they have applied their com-mitment to excellence and unlatch craftsmanship to Stand Up Paddleboards.

Mad River Serenade

Mad River 40th Anniversary ExplorerForty years ago, in a small workshop on a picturesque hill in Vermont, a tradition of innovation and craftsmanship was born in Mad River Canoe. In celebration of our 40th Anniversary, we’re offering a limited-time special edition of one of our most revered classics: the Explorer Kevlar. Hearkening back to aesthetics from limited editions long passed, the 40th Anniversary hull is two-toned red and white with el-

egantly stained slotted gunwales and contoured cane seats and yoke. The quick, efficient Explorer Kevlar is a rare hull design that can satisfy the most discerning paddler but also welcomes the developing canoeist – a combina-tion as unique as the company itself.

A fiberglass construction, the Serenade is designed for those looking for easy paddling in a relatively lightweight, cost-effective, low-maintenance boat. This hybrid solo canoe merges the best attributes of a canoe with the best attributes of a kayak. Bridging the gap between a small, easy-portaging pack canoe and a solo hull, the Serenade is stable, comfortable, easy to paddle and cost-effective, provid-ing an option for recreational paddlers who prefer to go solo.

At 13 feet, the shallow-vee asymmetrical hull is very stable and versatile. The open canoe design makes loading and unloading quick and easy. Truly an innova-tion for the hybrid canoe sector, the unique seating system comes with standard adjustable footbraces, leg-lifter support and innovative adjustability in a reclining seat for all-day comfort on the water. The seat is also removable, so it can double as outdoor seating on the shore.

How to Choose Your New CanoeSolo or Tandem?

A solo canoe is designed to be paddled by one person and is set up with a single center seat at the proper balance point. Solos may be as short as 10’ for a pack type canoe to as long as 18’ and longer for a very efficient cruising, racing or expedition model. A tandem is set up for two paddlers and can range from 12’ to 19’ or more. They generally offer greater capacity and sta-bility due to their increased length and width. Hybrid canoes can be paddled as a tandem but have an added third seat so they can be paddled solo as well.

Types of Canoes

To help you determine the best length, design, and material, and the optimal stability, efficiency and capac-ity, consider the following questions:

What type of water will you paddle on? Calm or fast moving rivers? Small lakes or large open bodies of water?

What will you use the canoe for? Fishing, day outings, exercise, racing, overnight camping, or extended wil-derness trips? A shorter, deeper, more rockered (curved from bow to stern) and durable canoe would be ideal for moving rivers. Paddling larger and/or more windy bodies of water would dic-tate a longer, straighter, more efficient, seaworthy, and lighter craft.

Who and what will be in the canoe? Adults, squirmy children, pets, lots of heavy gear? Knowing what will be in the canoe will help you determine the length, design and capacity you’ll need.

Canoe MaterialsDifferent materials affect the weight,

strength, performance and cost of a canoe.

Aluminum is very durable and cost efficient, but heavier, noisier, less effi-cient, and conducts heat and cold more readily.

There are several types of foam-cored, Molded Plastic constructions: Superlink and Polylink are trade names for Old Town’s less expensive, heavy-duty materials. They have foam cores which provide stiffness as well as buoyancy. They are a good option for the budget conscious paddler where weight is not a concern. Royalex has become a popular material due to its moderate weight, durability and price. It can be used on flatwater as well as in rapids. Royalex is not quite as indestruc-tible as Superlink, but is considerably lighter weight.

Fiberglass allows boats to have finer lines and is more efficient moving through the water. Kevlar is well known for its lightweight, puncture resistance and tear strength. Its use in the con-struction of high performance, ultra-lightweight canoes is ideal for flatwater paddling but has its limitations for more challenging conditions because it has

lower impact strength and abrasion resistance.

Graphite is used to create the lightest weight canoe for performance minded, weight conscious paddlers or racers. The weight savings gained by graphite increases the price making it the most expensive option.

Test paddle

The experience and comfort levels paddlers possess are important factors in the choice of a canoe. Read paddling publications and websites to learn about the variety of canoes available. However, the best way to find the right canoe is to paddle them! We offer the unique opportunity to test paddle sev-eral models so you find the right boat for you.. Whether you come to one of our stores or to Paddlefest, our staff will be happy to help make your selection process easy and effective. Then you can enjoy your new canoe for years!

Once you’ve decided to purchase a canoe, you’ll need to make some decisions to narrow the field of options from the hundreds of models available. Here’s some tips to help you wade through your choices.

Lightweight, long-lasting canoes for Sportsmen

Myth: Kevlar skid plates cause poor performance, slobbering-upa canoe’s entry lines. Depressing. Only bad paddlers that

Choosing the Right Kayak

Yakima high-performance sports trailers let you carry your gear in style without breaking a sweat (or your back, for that matter).

mountainman trailer ad 012712.indd 1 1/30/12 1:35 PM

Kayak MaterialsPolyethylene (PE): A tough, resilient plastic that can withstand years of use and is of moderate weight and price.

Thermoplastics: Not as light weight as fiberglass or Kevlar composites but have a tougher exterior surface than PE and represent a mid-point between PE and composites in terms of price, weight and durability. Similar to composite performance.

Composites: Fiberglass, Kevlar & Graph-ite are all used, often in combination, to produce the lightest weight. An exterior gel coat offers abrasion and UV protec-tion, but is less impact resistant than PE or Thermoplastic. In addition to reduc-ing weight, composites produce a stiffer hull and dramatically improve glide.

Recreational KayaksEven the most apprehensive of paddlers find recreational kayaks simple and fun because they offer a stable, easy-to-han-dle, and very affordable option. They are perfect for lazy rivers, as well as smaller lakes and ponds, or along protected shorelines of larger bodies of water.

Ranging in length from around 9 ½’ to 14’, they are wider than their touring counterparts. The cockpit of a recre-ational kayak tends to be large, mak-ing entry and exit easier. Many feature a stern storage hatch, which provides gear storage for day use.

Recreational kayaks have greater “initial stability,” the degree to which the boat resists that feeling of tippiness when at rest upon the water. It is also a desirable characteristic for paddlers who will be sitting in their kayak for long periods of time.

Touring KayaksTouring kayaks, longer length (usually

topping out at 18’) and narrower width (approx. 21 to 25”) yield a straighter tracking, more efficient craft that sig-nificantly reduces paddler effort when traveling greater distances or contend-ing with stronger wind and wave condi-tions.

They have better “secondary stability” (resistance to capsize) than recreational models and usually have both a bow and a stern hatch which offer more gear storage for extended trips and serve as flotation chambers.

Importance of a Good Fit: A touring kayak that’s too large for the paddler can be compared to wearing the wrong size shoe: If it’s several sizes too large, it’s dif-ficult to walk, much less tackle tougher demands. With smaller cockpits, narrow-er width and less volume, touring kayaks provide better physical contact between paddler and boat, which results in better control. Rudder VS. Skeg: Many models offer a rudder system that is designed to compensate for the effects of wind and

waves. Greenland or British style boats offer a drop down skeg which aids with tracking but lacks the turning benefit or ability to continually alter course provid-ed by a rudder.

So What to Choose?Ultimately your selection will depend on your intended us, but should include an element of your personality and comfort on the water as well.

We offer you the unique opportunity to test paddle several boats to make sure you select a great boat for YOU. Whether you come to one of our stores or to Paddlefest, we’ll assist you to make sure kayaking becomes as much fun for you as it is for all of us.
