Located on East Houston St be tween Crosby and Lafayet te , th is pro jec t proposes a headquar te rs for the New York based hea l thcare non-prof i t o rgan iza t ion Hous ing Works, which would be sponsored by a New York based music composer. The in i t ia l mus ica l ana lys is o f the composer ’s work ser ves as insp i ra t ion for the tec ton ic ar t icu la t ion of the f ina l des ign.

The musica l composer f rom whom the pro jec t draws insp i ra t ion is Ph i l ip G lass, who s tar ted h is career in New York dur ing the 1960s. H is so lo p iano p iece, Metamorphos is 2 , was s tud ied a t the beg inn ing of the des ign process, where i t became c lear tha t h is musica l ident i ty cou ld be descr ibed as music made up of ‘ repeat ing s t r uctures ’ .

However, what makes the work most in te res t ing is the manner in which such s t r uctures in te ract wi th each o ther. The ‘h inge’ tha t enab les these layers to crea te ad jacenc ies wi th each o ther was the e lement in the music tha t c rea ted the complex i t ies wi th in the composi t ion.

The proposed des ign a ims to conso l ida te the var ious ser v ices prov ided by the organ iza t ion in to one s t r ucture , drawing insp i ra t ion f rom the s t r ucture in music , whi le represent ing arch i tec ture o f mass t imber amidst the Cast I ron d is t r ic t o f Soho.

The d iagram be low shows how the var ious programs wi th in the organ iza t ion re la te to each o ther. The sunken p laza leads to the bookstore tha t prov ides f inanc ia l s tab i l i ty to the organ iza t ion. Ver t ica l c i rcu la t ion a l lows for progress ion in to o ther ser v ices such as of f ices and c l in ics , which requ i re a cer ta in leve l o f pr ivacy.

The typ ica l house is f i xed to the ear th ; anchored and s t i l l , wh i le the sun and the e lements constant ly change. But what i f the house cou ld move? What i f we cou ld do more wi th less? What i f a s ing le space cou ld become S ix?SIX HOUSE proposes one room in suppor t o f s ix programs; empower ing each sur face to become wal l , f loor, ce i l ing and aper ture . Medi ta t ing, Drawing, Gather ing, Ea t ing, Rest ing and Dreaming dr ive reconnect ion to the sky, ground and communi ty o f Ta ik i -cho.

SIX HOUSE creates a new hous ing typo logy touch ing the ground more l igh t ly than t rad i t iona l bu i ld ing techn iques, whi le fos ter ing act ive engagement wi th in te r io r and ex ter io r env i ronments as we l l as those who inhab i t them. Natura l l igh t , compact but comfor tab le l i v ing spaces and a soc ia l r i tua l o f co l labora t ion wi th f r iends, fami ly and ne ighbours , reor ien t the l i v ing exper ience.

F ive peop le assemble to ro ta te the space together, and together they occupy each of the un ique and d i f fe rent sur faces.Trans i t ion between programs occurs through the coord ina t ion of f i ve bod ies and ten hands engag ing the ex ter io r she l l , in a communal ro l l ing sequence. The s ix ( f ive in te r io r, one ex ter io r ) programs are accessed through operab le aper tures tha t ser ve as both door way and window.

Lightness is not on ly about how the bu i ld ing lands ( touches the ground) , or about the embodied energy inherent in the mater ia l p rocesses of product ion, fabr ica t ion and t ranspor ta t ion, but L ightness is about an exper ien t ia l qua l i ty. Located of f o f 231st s t ree t in the Bronx, the pro jec t is s i tua ted in Ewen Park present a t the in te rsect ion of two ne ighbour ing but d ispara te ne ighborhoods; K ingsbr idge and Riverda le . The inherent topograph ica l change in the reg ion has resu l ted in a d ichotomous cond i t ion between the soc ia l c lasses tha t res ide in the count ies . Th is pro jec t t r ies to crea te an oppor tun i ty for the two separa ted soc ia l g roups to poss ib ly in te ract and in te rsect beyond jus t a dynamic mode of pass ing, by tak ing advantage of the e levat iona l change tha t has crea ted the separa t ion in the f i rs t p lace. I t ser ves as a pedest r ian c i rcu la t ive path , embedded wi th programs tha t a re a t t rac t ive to a l l members of the communi ty, wi th potent ia l soc ie ta l in tegra t ive consequences.

The s i te was located a t the end of the busy 231st s t ree t . The presence of a subway s ta t ion a long i ts ax is a long wi th the var ie ty o f d i f fe rent programs a long the s t ree t , c rea ted a var ie ty o f users tha t were in constant dynamic pass ing wi th each o ther.The s i te crea tes a d iv ide between the two ne ighbor ing count ies wi th i ts s teep sect iona l character is t ic . As a resu l t , the park has become a sparse ly used p iece of land tha t breaks c i rcu la t ion between the two ne ighborhoods.

Based in the town of Dobbs Fer r y in Upsta te New York , the pro jec t is located on the edge of the Hudson River, ad jacent to an ex is t ing water f ront deve lopment park . The water f ront as we l l as the s i te r un para l le l to the Met ro Nor th t racks, which act as a phys ica l bar r ie r, separa t ing the res t o f the town f rom the water.Th is pro jec t t r ies to exp lore the oppor tun i ty o f a boat mak ing academy as an ex tens ion of the water f ront park to become a hub of pub l ic in te ract ion wi th the r iver, thus br idg ing the gap between the townspeople and the water.

SCRIBED RELIEFThrough the act o f cut t ing , scor ing and fo ld ing, var ious i te ra t ions of s i te p lann ing and programmat ic mass ing were exp lored to re f lec t the data gathered through s i te ana lys is and t r ied to exp lore var ious access- types in to the s i te . I t became c lear tha t the ex is t ing bay on the s i te was another po in t o f access tha t cou ld be taken advantage of, as a potent ia l water fea ture tha t would cut in to the land and br ing the water in to the s i te .

THE ACADEMY

The academy is i tse l f d iv ided in to th i rds as we l l , w i th a sect iona l change accompany ing changes in pr ivacy. The lower leve l houses the boat mak ing workshop, open to a l l academy users as we l l as those v is i t ing the s i te . Ascend ing a leve l a re the c lass rooms, and lec ture rooms, pr iva te to the academy users on ly. The f ina l leve l is the most removed f rom the ground, and thus the most pr iva te , hous ing pr iva te quar te rs for the teachers .

THE MUSEUM

To ach ieve max imum v iews, the museum is an outdoor env i ronment tha t compr ises of s tepp ing leve ls tha t shoot o f f f rom the workshop in the academy, shar ing an overarch ing s t r ucture , which houses the boats for v iewing.

Home shou ld not on ly be a p lace to re juvenate one’s mind and body, but a lso to reconnect wi th loved ones. Th is pro jec t tack les the issue of l i v ing wi th in a mul t i -genera t iona l fami ly s t r ucture ; where the home is ab le acc l imat i ze to the chang ing dynamics of i ts occupants whi le es tab l ish ing s t rong fami ly in te ract ions.

The house is d iv ided in to 3 zones between the s t r uctura l wa l ls , as seen in the p lans. The outer zones house the res t ing and s leep ing quar te rs for each genera t ion, enab l ing the fami ly members to have the i r own moments o f pr ivacy. I t is impera t ive for a successfu l and happy l i fes ty le wi th in a la rge fami ly s t r ucture tha t ind iv idua ls have the i r own moments o f pr ivacy.

However, happ iness can a lso s tem f rom hea l thy re la t ions wi th the o ther fami ly members. The cent ra l zone houses the programmat ic re la t ions (seen in axonometr ic d iagram) tha t pu l l the var ious genera t ions towards i t , encourag ing in te r-genera t iona l in te ract ions.

Enc losed ch i ld ren’s p layroom prov ides an added leve l o f secur i ty, which once the ch i ld ren grow, can f lex in to a workspace. Th is same sect iona l qua l i ty a lso harbors hea l th benef i ts as younger genera t ions are made to use s ta i rcases da i ly to ge t a round the house. The o lder genera t ions, however, inhab i t the lower f loor for ease of access ib i l i ty and a lso have the added benef i ts o f a ramp to descend to the l i v ing room.

The sp l i t - leve l l i v ing crea tes a genera l d iv ide between the pub l ic aspects o f the house (western ha l f ) f rom the day- to-day usage of the house. As a resu l t , the da i ly occup ied space of the house is se t back in to the p lo t , separa t ing i t f rom the s t ree t s ide and there fore mak ing i t more pr iva te and secure .The e levat ions dep ic t th is leve l change. They a lso show how through d i f fe rent e leva t ions, l igh t is a l lowed to penet ra te the cent ra l zone, which harbors most o f these in te ract ions. Located a t the corner o f 13th s t ree t and F i f th Avenue, the pro jec t a ims to crea te a un ique seat ing space tha t can a lso promote work produced by New School S tudents . The des ign a ims to implement modular const r uct ion tha t reduces assembly t ime on s i te and is easy d ismant le and re-assemble .
