• An adjective tells what kind or how many• Sometimes an adjective can follow the noun and a linking verb

connects the noun and adjective.• Examples:

– The terrifying sight of an approaching storm filled the men with dread.– Shackleton and his crew became exhausted after walking for many miles

• Find the adjectives in the following sentences.– Fifteen men pulled each boat.– They walked safely across the solid

ice.– Fierce, furious winds shook the Endurance during the storm.

Demonstrative Adjective• A demonstrative adjective tells

which one. Examples are “this”, “that”, “these”, and “those”.

• Demonstrative adjectives most often come before a noun.

• Use “this” and “that” with singular nouns and “these” and “those” with plural nouns

• Example:– The sailors wanted to land on

that island.

• Fill in the blanks with the correct demonstrative adjective.– _______ is the stormiest ocean

Proper Adjectives• Proper adjectives are

formed from proper nouns and begin with a capital letter.

• Regular adjectives and demonstrative adjectives are only capitalized if they begin a sentence or are part of a title.

• Examples:– Many of the sailors were

English.– He took a Chilean ship.

• Decide which word is the proper adjective and should be capitalized.– Many of the men wanted

italian food.– An alaskan sled dog could
