THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT DAMPING...KONI’SANSWER IS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGYShockabsorbersaretheheartofanycar’ssuspension.Theyareoftenthemostneglectedcomponentwhenitcomestoperformancetuning.KONIrecognizesthateveryvehiclehasuniquedampingneeds,andforthatreasontheyoffershockswiththreedifferenttechnologiesinordertoofferasystemthatistheperfectsolutiontoanindividualracingapplication.
Itisvitalthatthedampingrateoftheshockabsorberbeinhar-monywiththespringrateandunsprungmassofthevehicleandthentunedtothecurrenttrackconditions.
EveryKONIisadjustableforultimateperformancebenefits,andtheadjustabilityfeatureofKonishocksmakesthisvitaltuningasimpleprocedureifafewsimpleguidelinesarefol-lowed.
BUMP DAMPINGThebumpdampingcontrolstheunsprungweightofthevehicle(wheels,axles,hubcarriers,etc.).Itcontrolstheupwardmove-mentofthesuspensionwhenhittingabumpinthetrackorunderbraking.Itshouldnotbeusedtocontrolthedownwardmovementofthevehiclewhenitencountersdips(thisisafunc-tionofthespring).
Also,bumpdampingshouldnotbeusedtocontrolrollorbottoming.Generally,theidealbumpsettingisachievedwhenwalkingorsidehopinacornerisataminimumandtractionandridefeelthebest.

Thefour-wayadjustable2822seriesisauniqueKONIshockabsorber,especiallyde-velopedforthetopendinmotorracing.Indevelopingthisnewproduct,Koniengineersbenefittedfrommanyyearsofknowhowandexperienceinmotorracing.Eversince1954,Konihasheldaprominentpositionintheracingworld.Manyvictoriesandcham-pionshipsinFormula1,IndyCar,Champcar,IRLandmanyothertouring,sportsandformulacarserieshaveproventhesuccessandconfidenceamongsttheracingteams.TheNewGeneration2822seriesshockisbasedontheproventechnologyofthe2812seriestwo-wayadjustabledamperhavingbeenusedbymanyraceteamsduringthemanyyearsofit’sexistence.
DAMPER TYPEThe2822seriesshockisadouble-walled,high-pressuregas,hydraulicshockabsorber.Specificallydesignedforcompetitionpurposes,itisfullyadjustablewhilemountedonthecar.Itcontainstwoadjustersinbump(compression)andtwoinrebound(extension),bothhavinganindependentlow-speed,aswellashigh-speedadjustment.Itsprecisionadjust-mentmechanismallowsthemaximumcontrolpossibleoverthedampingforcesgenerated.
LOW SPEEDOnmodernracingcars,themeanpistonspeedsthedampersarerunningatareverylow.Asaresult,precisecontroloverthedampingforcesatlowspeedsisveryimportant.Thisinturnmeansthatverysmallflowsofoilhavetobecontrolled.Inmanyracingshockdesigns,aneedlevalveisusedtotryandachievethisfunction.Suchasimplemechanismhasmanydrawbacks.ForKONI,repeatability,consistencyandeaseofuseareamustforanyqualityracingshockabsorber.Toachieveit,the2822seriesusesuperiorandad-vancedadjustmentcartridgesthatcontroltheopeningandclosingofvalve-loadedports.Thesetwocartridgesarecontainedinthepiston,oneforbumpandoneforrebound,operatingtotallyindependentofeachother.Bothofthesecartridgeshaveeightpositionadjustmentsavailable,generatingatotalof64predefineddampingcurves.Distinctstops(clicks)assurethateachportcanbeeitheropenorclosed.Thus,totalrepeatabilityofperformanceisengineeredintothedamper,withnoneedforanytypeofcalibration.Auniquefeatureisthatthelow-speeddampingiscreatedintwostages,onebypredefinedbleedholesandtheotherbyports.
HIGH SPEEDWithbiggermovementsoccurring,suchasdrivingoverrumblestrips,thehigh-speeddampingbecomesimportant.Thesuspensionneedstobeabletomoveinsteadofbecom-ingsolidduetotoomuchdamping.Twocartridgesfittedintotheoutercylindercontrolthehigh-speeddampingandadjustment.Theyallowthedampingtohaveanadjustableblow-offforce.Also,thesecartridgesoperatetotallyindependentofeachotherandfea-tureeightpositions,allbeingpredefinedandhavingdistinctstops.Theadjustmentrangeofallfourcartridgesiswideanddividedinequalsteps.Figure1showstheadjustmentstepsinreboundwiththelowspeedadjustersettopositiononeandad-high-speedadjustersettopositioneightandadjustingtheeightstepsinlowspeed.

Forces in Bump and Rebound generated by piston area, not effected by rod displacement
Thisisindeedauniquefeature!Othershockabsorbermanufacturersmakeuseoftheroddisplacementtogeneratethebumpforces.Theoilflowinthatcaseisalwayssmallerthantheoilflowcreatedbythepistonringarea.Manyofthesetypeofshockstakealargerdiameterpistonrodtogetagreaterandbetter-controllableflow.Thenegativesideeffectsofalargerrod,however,arenotmentioned.Tonameafew:
•agreatertravelofthefloatingpiston(whichdividesthegasfromthe oil)andconsequentlycausesashorterlifespan.
•bulkyreservoirstoaccommodatethegreaterflowofoil
•smallerringareaonthepistonforproperrebound
•higherhydraulicpressuresneededtoreachanequivalentreboundforce thanwiththeuseofsmallerrods,ortheneedforbiggerpistons.
KONIhasdesignedthedampertoavoidthesenegativesideeffects.Theroddis-placementhasnoeffectwhatsoeverandallforcesaregeneratedbythebestpossibleoilflow.
Negligible phase lag
Alargepistonringarea,combinedwithasmalldiameterpistonrodandhighgaspressure,givesnegligiblephaselag(hysteresis).Or,insimpleterms,anegligibledelayindampingresponsetimeagainstdampermovement.Whenusingaremotereservoirthisphaselagonlyincreases,asmoreoilcanbecompressed(andsometimesthetubebetweenthecylinderandremotereservoirisslightlyflexingaswell).KONIusesthebestpossiblecombinationtogiveaslittlephaselagaspossible.
Low Speed damping in 2 stages (bleed holes and ports), no needle valves
Manymanufacturersonlyusethenumberorsizeofbleedholestoadjustthelowspeeddamping.Sev-eralalsodothisthroughatapered-shapedneedle.Suchaconfigurationisnotconsistentenoughandverysensitivetotoler-ancesandtemperatures.KONIusesfixedbleedholesincombinationwithvalve-loadedports.Eachportcanevenbecombinedwithaspe-cificbleedholediameter.Theseportsareeither
openedorclosedwhenadjustingandthusensuretotalrepeatabilityandconsistencyineachadjustmentposition.
Wide adjustment range in equal steps
Throughthegreatflexibilityandconfigurationofboththehigh-speedaswellasthelow-speedadjustmentcartridges,awideadjustmentinequalstepscanbedesigned.Thiswiderangediminishesthenecessityofhavingdifferentshocksfordifferenttracks.
Factory assembled and calibrated adjustment cartridges
Allshimstackassemblies,whichdeterminethefinaldampingcharacteristics,arefactoryassembledaswellascalibrated,toensurethecorrectgraphafterassemblyofthedamper.Althoughtheassemblyofthedamperisajobtobedonebycertifiedpersonnelonly,itmakestheoutcomeofthecharacteristicfoolproofandtheneedforcalibrationonashockdynoiseliminated.

No need for external reservoir
Manydamperconfigura-tionsmakeuseofaremotereservoiramustasthebumpforcesareadjustedbychokingtheoilflowpassingthroughonitswaytothereservoir.Externalreservoirsbecomesuperfluous,asonlytheringareacreatesallforc-es.Needlesstosaythatthismakesthedamperlighterandresultsinasimpleandcleaninstallation.
Adjustable spring platform
Adjustablespringplatformsareamusttosetupthecorrectrideheightand/orspringpreload.KONIusesatrapezium-shapedthreadtohaveabiggerthreadsurfaceandconsequentlyasmallerloadonthethreadandlessforcetoadjusttheplatform.Witheachfullturn,theplatformheightchangesby2mm(0.08”).
Matches 2” and 2 1/4” springs

A TRUECHOICE KONI shock service technician will place your shock on our KONI Shock dynamometer, testing the bump and rebound. The machine plots out the shock’s response on a graph (above) to have a visual record of the shock’s performance. This graph is of a 2812 double-adjust-able shock and illustrates the range of adjustment in both bump and rebound.

KONI Threaded Suspension Kits include four KONI Sport-valved struts and/or shocks featuring threaded, adjustable, lower spring perches (where applicable) and progressive rate, lowering springs designed for per-formance street driving. The kits are engineered in a joint effort with KONI divisions in Holland, Germany, and North America. Testing of the kits was done on the famed, high-speed German Autobahns.These kits were designed to give the vehicle a preferred ride height of 1.5” to 2.0” below stock, but the threading range allows the owner to make the ride height considerably higher or lower. Additionally, the car can be run low in the summer and then raised for winter driving. It is always recommended that the kits be installed with bump rubbers because the threaded range of perch adjustment may allow the vehicle to sit low enough (for show or display purposes) to risk bottoming the shock’s internal parts without them. Also, care should be taken in setting ride height so as to not allow oversized rims and tires to rub on the car’s inner fender, etc.
