Introduction Adjustment layers allow you to adjust and enhance your digital images. Adjustment layers are non-
destructive, meaning that your original image is maintained. With adjustment layers, you can return to
your original image at any time, make changes to the layers, and combine various adjustment types.
Learning Objectives After completing the instructions in this booklet, you will be able to:

Types of Adjustments You can choose from the following color adjustment commands:
Brightness/Contrast
Levels
Curves
Exposure
Vibrance
Hue/Saturation
Color Balance
Black & White
Photo Filter
Channel Mixer
Invert
Posterize
Threshold
Gradient Map
Selective Color
Color Lookup
Add an Adjustment Layer 1. To add an adjustment layer, use the Adjustments panel on the right side of your screen in
Photoshop.
Note: If you do not see the Adjustments panel, follow these steps:
a. Click Window in the menu bar (See Figure 1).
b. Click Adjustments (See Figure 1).
c. The Adjustments panel will appear (See Figure 1).

2. Click any icon for the desired adjustment command in the Adjustments panel. In this example,
we will use the Curves adjustment.

Note: When you hover your mouse over any adjustment command, you will see the name and a brief
description.
3. The Properties panel for that adjustment command will open.

4. Adjust your adjustment layer as desired:
a. Use the Auto button to apply an automatic color correction to your image
(See Figure 4).
b. Use on Preset drop-down to apply one of the available presets (e.g., Medium Contrast)
(See Figure 4).
c. Make adjustments manually if the Auto or Preset options don’t give the desired effect
(See Figure 4).

Modify an Adjustment Layer The following explains how to modify an adjustment layer:
1. Double-click the thumbnail of an existing adjustment layer in the Layers panel.

Note: If you do not see the Layers panel, follow these steps:
a. Click on Window in the menu bar (See Figure 6).
b. Click on Layers (See Figure 6).

Delete an Adjustment Layer The following explains how to delete an adjustment layer:
1. Double-click the thumbnail of an existing adjustment layer in the Layers pane.

2. Click the Trash Can button in the Properties panel for that adjustment.
