I think it’s important to examine our disciple-
ship, or how closely we are following the example leL
by Christ. Perhaps one of the greatest tests that we
face is how we love. First John 4:8 reminds us that God
is love. He is the very defini on of love. When we
think of all the characteris cs of love described in I
Corinthians 13 such as pa ence, kindness, humility
and persevering then we see the picture of who God
really is.
So how well do we love? First John 4:7-8 gives
us two truths.
Knowing God means giving love
Not giving love means you don’t know God
We can talk about how much we know God but
un l we show it through love, John tells us that we
don’t really know him. A test of our discipleship is how
much love are we giving, sharing and showing. This is a
love shown to all those around us.
First John 4:20 “If someone says, ‘I love
God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar;
for he who does not love his brother
whom he has seen, how can[c] he love
God whom he has not seen? 21 And this
commandment we have from Him: that
he who loves God must love his brother
also.”
It is not possible to claim love for God, whom
you cannot see if you don’t give love to those that you
can see.
So, what’s love got to do with it: Everything.
