I. Administration

A. Relationship of the Academy to the Church Liberty Christian Academy is one of the educational ministries of Liberty Lighthouse Church, and therefore falls under the leadership of the pastor. The Academy staff are however independent employees of Liberty Christian Academy.

B. Pastor The Pastor is ultimately responsible for the church’s education, including the Academy. He is not involved in the daily operation of the Academy. The pastor may recommend items to the school board of LCA on all matters relating to the ministry of education. The pastor may hire administrators and principals to assist him in carrying out the ministry of education.

C. School Board The following are the members of the school board of Liberty Christian Academy:

Stan McNutt – Senior Pastor Dr. C. D. BallardBarry WalkerRick Arnold

The board shall assist and advise the pastor and principal on matters relating to the Academy. The board also shall hear matters and disputes that may arise and shall advise the pastor and principal accordingly. The board may create and recommend to the pastor policies for governing the Academy consistent with the Biblical principles.

D. Administrator / Principal The Administrator / principal of Liberty Christian Academy works closely with and under the direction of the pastor. The principal oversees the daily operation of the Academy. The principal also has the primary decision-making authority for the Academy. Presently, Stephanie McNutt serves as the principal of the Academy. She has 3 years of experience in Christian education. She became associated with Liberty Christian Academy in the fall of 2014. Mrs. McNutt is a registered nurse and graduated with a degree in nursing from Grayson County College. She has completed administrator training through Accelerated Christian Education.

E. SupervisorsAt LCA, teachers are called supervisors. A supervisor is a professional educator who has been trained and certified exclusively for this position by Accelerated Christian Education, Inc. The supervisor must be active in a local, Bible-believing church. The supervisor has the responsibility to oversee the academic progress of students. They prescribe the students’ academics and assist the students in their academic issues. The supervisor also is responsible to inspire achievement in the students. They encourage and motivate students to maximize their potential in their daily academic work. Since LCA is committed to train young people in a Christian environment, with the emphasis on matters of eternal value, the supervisor will work closely with the pastor, principal, and the parents in the training and development of the whole child.

F. Monitor A monitor, who is a paraprofessional, serves as a teacher’s aide. They have at least a high school education and are active in a local, Bible-believing church. Their primary responsibility is to assist the supervisor in Learning Center activities. They provide procedural assistance to maintain a quiet and pleasant learning environment for the students. They are the supervisor’s eyes and ears in the learning center by keeping alert and attentive to specific needs and relaying these to the supervisor in private. The monitor works in agreement with the supervisor—in prayer, attitudes and actions toward fulfilling students’ needs and progress.

II. Admissions Policies Attendance at Liberty Christian Academy is a privilege and not a right. All new students are admitted on a probationary basis for the first six (6) weeks. The goal of the Academy is to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as: leadership, self-discipline, responsibility, integrity, good citizenship, and consistency. The church, as does the Academy, holds the Bible as our standard and expects the highest standards of morality, honesty, and genuine Christian character from its staff and students.

A. Kindergarten Learning Center Liberty Christian Academy has a selected open enrollment policy for kindergarten. LCA will accept children who turn 5 years of age by September 1st of that calendar year.

3

B. Elementary Learning Center LCA also has a selected open enrollment policy for students who are of elementary age, grades K-4th. All transfer students coming from 1st grade and up with curriculum other than the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum will be given diagnostic tests to assess math, English, and reading proficiency. Since each curriculum has its own uniqueness, the diagnostic tests will detect any learning gaps a student may have acquired so that an accurate performance level can be prescribed.

C. Upper Learning CenterEven though LCA may have an open enrollment, it reserves the right to be more selective in accepting high school students. LCA expects a high standard of behavior and moral character. The Academy will welcome any student whose parents/guardians enroll their child in the Academy to obtain a Christian based education.

LCA reserves the right to accept or deny credits as the administration deems necessary. Generally, most, if not all, credits from the previous high school(s) are accepted and recorded on the student’s permanent transcript. LCA accepts transfer credits in no less than half-year increments. The student must then complete the minimum required course of study to receive a LCA diploma. LCA does not offer high school credit by examination.

All transfer students coming from curricula other than the A.C.E. curriculum are tested for academic placement. LCA diagnoses each student in math, English, and reading proficiency prior to placing the curriculum order. Diagnostic testing will detect any learning gaps a student may have acquired so that an accurate performance level can be prescribed.

D. Racial Nondiscrimination Liberty Christian Academy admits students of any race, color, and national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to the students at the Academy. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, athletics, and other school-administered programs.

E. Selection of Students Liberty Christian Academy is an educational ministry of Liberty Lighthouse Church. Liberty Christian Academy ultimately reserves the right to enroll or deny enrollment of any student.

F. Admissions Committee The admissions committee of LCA will review applications and determine which students are admitted to the school and which students will need to be reviewed by the school board prior to acceptance. Any student, returning, presently enrolled or new, that is arrested must be interviewed by the board of trustees for admission or re-admission to the school. All aspects of this student will be reviewed before a decision is made.

H. Re-Enrollment Liberty Christian Academy encourages parents/guardians to re-enroll their students earlier than general registration to guarantee acceptance. Re-enrollment for existing families begins in April. A re-enrollment form will be sent home to be completed and returned prior to May 1st. New enrollment begins in May. Registration fees must be paid for returning and new students. No student is automatically re-accepted but acceptance is based at the sole discretion of the school.

III. Withdrawal Policies

A. NoticeParents have the right to withdraw their student from LCA at any time and for any reason. Likewise, the Academy also has the right, for any reason, to ask the parents to withdraw the student. LCA will give parents prior notice before requiring withdrawal of their student.

IV. Financial Policies The parent or guardian is responsible for all fees incurred by enrolling in LCA, whether in the form of the registration fee, tuition fee, or any other fees that may apply. These fees must be paid in full to receive requested services from LCA.

Pre-Paid tuition, registration fees, and testing fees, are non-refundable for any reason. The full registration fee is due upon acceptance into Liberty Christian Academy,

regardless of what time in the school year the student enters Liberty Christian Academy. Tuition and Fees can be made by cash, check, or money order made payable to Liberty

Christian Academy. Returned checks will be charged a $25.00 fee. Ten month installment plan payments are due on the 1st of each month (Aug-May). A

$10.00 late fee will be assessed if payment is not received by the 10th of each month. Two equal installment plan payments are due on Aug 1st and Jan 1st. A $25.00 late fee

will be assessed if payment is not received by the 10th of those months. A student is not considered enrolled until all fees are paid and paperwork is turned in to

the office. A student's learning center space cannot be held until the registration fee is paid. Only registration and tuition payments may be combined into the same check. All other

incidental fees must be paid separately (field trips, convention fees, fund raisers, etc.). Any student with outstanding tuition at 60 days will be withdrawn unless an

arrangement has been made with the business office. Any student withdrawn for non-payment of tuition will be required to reapply, pay a new re-enrollment fee of $50.00, and must pay one month in advance for the remainder of that school term.

C. After School Care Liberty Christian Academy provides after school care Monday through Friday 3:00pm-5:45pm except on half days. The fee for this program is $800 for the school year. This is based on 32 full weeks of school at $25.00 per week. If you choose this program the fee will be added to the tuition and paid according to the payment option you chose for tuition (10 installments or two installments).

The students in this program will be provided with an after school snack and a staff member of LCA will be on duty until all students are picked up. All students must be picked up no later than 6:00pm.

V. General Policies

A. Church Attendance It is the desire of the staff, faculty, and administration of Liberty Lighthouse Church to have each student travel in the direction that God would lead them. There are two important ways in which we encourage our students to live for the Lord Jesus Christ. The first way is to challenge them through personal contact with other believers who are serving God (Hebrews 10:25). Secondly, we can build their faith, confidence, and trust in God by requiring them to be under the teaching and preaching of God's Word during weekly services (Romans 10:17). It is encouraged that all students attend services of Liberty Lighthouse Church, or their home church. Additionally, we strongly recommend that our students become actively involved in various youth ministries of their church such as teen soul-winning, bus ministry, Jr. Church, and rescue mission services. Students and parents/guardians are expected to belong to, and attend regularly Liberty Lighthouse Church of Sherman; or another Bible-believing, Bible-practicing church.

B. Arrival and Dismissal The Academy doors officially open at 7:30 a.m. Students are not allowed into the building before 7:30am. Please plan for your student not to arrive earlier this time. All students must to report to the church building upon arrival. A staff member will be there at 7:30 to receive students. Students are not allowed in the learning center without a teacher present. Unless arrangements have been made in advance with the Academy office, Liberty Christian Academy will not be held responsible for students whose parents drop them off for school before 7:30 a.m.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

The Academy day starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. At 3:10, those students still on the campus go to the Learning Center for Study Hall. The Academy office hours are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. During these hours, a parent may drop off the tuition payment or schedule an appointment to meet with school staff.

At dismissal, vehicles may approach around the east side of the school building. Academy staff will carefully move students as rapidly as possible so that drivers will not have to wait any longer than necessary. Students will wait under the breezeway until a staff member sees their ride; they will then be called to the attending staff member and loaded into the parent’s vehicle. This keeps students from running to cars randomly and risk being hit. Please remain in your vehicle at all times. 3 rd – 12th grades will be dismissed from the Learning Center no sooner than 3:00 p.m. 3rd - 12th grade parents must use the designated pick up line closest to the main red building. K-2 nd will be dismissed from the main church building at 2:50 p.m. K- 2nd parent vehicles should still approach on the east side of the school building and enter the church parking lot and pull to a designated area. Please remember that students can only be picked up at the designated pick up area.

If a student changes the way they are going home, we must have a note from the parent or a phone call to the school office by 2:30 p.m.

C. Attendance School attendance is a crucial element in a student’s education. Excessive absences will inhibit the student's academic progress. Every effort should be made by each student to be in the Academy every day they are able to attend. All appointments should be scheduled after school hours, if at all possible. Absence for reasons other than sickness, doctor's appointments, funerals, and emergencies should be arranged in advance with the child's supervisor. A prior arrangement form must be filled out if you know in advance that your child will miss more than 2 days of school. These forms can be picked up in the school office. To miss school to go to work is unacceptable, unless a student is in their senior year of high school. If your child is absent for any reason please call the school by 8:30am and leave a voicemail letting staff know your child will be out that day. A written excuse must be presented to the supervisor when a student returns to the Academy after an absence. This excuse must include the date(s) of the absence, the specific reason for the absence, and the parent's signature. If the absence is due to a doctor’s visit please bring a note from the doctor’s office.

Students leaving before the official attendance time of 10:00 a.m. will be counted absent, unless they are going to a doctor’s appointment. The student must bring a valid doctor’s note to the school office the next day to have that absence removed.

A student who has not been present during a school day will not be permitted to participate in athletic functions or activities that evening.

10

Page 11: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

If a student accumulates seventeen (17) unexcused absences in one school year, they may be withdrawn from school.

College Days will not count against perfect attendance.

D. Tardiness Regular, prompt attendance is extremely important. Late means a student is not present in the Learning Center by 8:00 a.m. When a student arrives late, a note written by a parent or guardian should be accompanied with the student. The note should state the date and reason for which the student is late. All tardies are considered unexcused unless for a doctor’s appointment. Some exceptions may occur, however, any exceptions will be at the sole discretion of the school administration. Five (5) late arrivals will equal one (1) day of absence.

E. Contacting Students in the Learning Center Because of the importance of the learning process, and to keep distractions to a minimum, contact with students during school hours is not allowed via phone. Students desiring to place emergency calls (to parents or guardians only) will do so in either the principal’s office or the school office. If PACEs are left at home, a parent will be called to have PACEs brought to school. Students who bring cellular phones or other electronic devices to school must check them in at the Academy office upon arrival.

F. Early Dismissal from Class When early dismissal is deemed to be necessary, parents will be notified by the school office either by phone call or written notice in advance. If a parent needs to pick their child up early please come to the main office and a member of the staff will call the student to the office at that time. Please allow yourself plenty of time for this process. All students must be signed out through the main school office.

G. Health Service and First Aid1. The Academy desires to maintain a healthful school environment by instituting controls designed to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. The term “communicable disease” shall mean an illness that arises because of a specific infectious agent that may be transmitted either directly or indirectly from a susceptible host or infected person or animal to other persons. A supervisor or administration official that reasonably suspects that a student or employee has a communicable disease shall immediately notify the administrator. Any student or employee with a communicable disease for which immunization is required by law or is available shall be temporarily excluded from school while ill and during recognized periods of communicability.

11

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

Students and employees with communicable diseases for which immunization is not available shall be excluded from school while ill. If the nature of the disease and circumstances warrant, the Academy may require an independent physician’s examination of the student or employee to verify the diagnosis of communicable disease. The Academy reserves the right to make all final decisions necessary to enforce its communicable disease policy and to take all necessary action to control the spread of communicable diseases within the school.2. Students are not to come to school if they are running a fever. A fever is considered 100.3∘. Students who become ill while at school will be sent to the nurse’s office. Students must be fever free (without fever-reducing medicine) for 24 hours before returning to school. Parents will be called to come and pick up a sick student. If a student is vomiting, they will be sent home. Students must not have vomited in 24 hours in order to return to school. Students with head lice will also be sent home immediately from school. Students will be rechecked the next day in the nurse’s clinic. If any live lice are found, the student will be sent home again. Nits will hatch out in most cases within 24 hours. Please remove ALL live lice and nits from your child’s hair before having them return to school. 3. If a student suffers a serious injury at school, the Academy will call for immediate medical assistance and then attempt to notify the parents. For minor injuries, an attempt will be made to reach the parent but will be handled by school officials. Minor scraps, bumps and bruises will be handled in the school clinic. A note from the nurse may or may not come home depending on the severity of the situation. 4. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil) may be administered by the staff with written permission from the parent/guardian. Any other medical needs should be discussed with child’s supervisor. In the event a student becomes ill or injured during the school hours and cannot function normally in the Learning Center, the Academy office will notify the parent or guardian to take the student home until they are fully recovered.

H. Student Vehicles 1. Only licensed drivers are permitted to drive automobiles to the Academy. All students must stay out of and off of vehicles from arrival time until departure. Vehicles should be parked in the parking lot on the west side of the school. Parked vehicles and the parking lot are off limits. Vehicles should be locked.2. Student drivers may not leave the Academy grounds during school hours without permission. Students must have written permission from their parents to go home with another student driver. If an emergency arises during the day in which the parent needs their child to go home with someone else, the parent should contact the school office to let the staff know. Student drivers may not

5. Student driver must provide a copy of a valid drivers license before being given permission to drive on Academy property.

I. Visitors Visitors are welcome to Liberty Christian Academy. Parents, grandparents, etc. are welcome to have lunch with their child. Only individuals listed on the child’s contact list will be allowed to have lunch with a child. Visitors must check in at the school office with their driver’s licenses or state identification, sign in and receive a visitor badge. We do this for the safety of your child. M. Lunch and Birthdays1. Lunch boxes, sacks, and lunch containers must be labeled with the student's first and last name. Please make sure all lunch boxes are appropriate. 2. Limited refrigerator space will be provided for student lunches. Insulated lunch boxes or ice packs are recommended.3. There is to be no sharing of food at lunch among all students. This is done for the protection of your child. As children do not know what another child may or may not be allergic to. Please remind your child that sharing of school lunches or snacks is strictly prohibited.

4. If your child wishes to distribute birthday invitations at school every student in his/her classroom must be included. Balloons, flowers, etc. that are sent to the school will be given to the student at the end of the day to avoid distractions.5. Cupcakes are allowed for a student’s birthday, but only at lunchtime. 1. Upper Learning Center: Students with at least an “A” privilege level will take a break time from 9:45 – 10:00 a.m. Students without privilege may have a short break for restroom and drinking fountain, then return back to the Learning Center. They will break for lunch at 11:30 a.m.

2. HS Students with at least an “A” privilege will take a break time from 10:00 – 10:15 a.m. Students without privilege may have a short break for the restroom and drinking fountain, then return back to the Learning Center. HS lunch is from 12:00 – 12:30.

3. Early learning center students K-2 breaks – see teacher. Lunch is from 11:00 – 11:30.

4. All Early Learning center students have at least 20 minutes of recess time per day.

O. Parental Involvement The Bible clearly teaches that parents/guardians are ultimately responsible for the training of their children (Deuteronomy 6:7, Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:1-4, and Hebrews 12:9). The staff of LCA will never replace a parent/guardian or intentionally imply that a parent’s word or judgment is inferior; however, LCA staff will only maintain students at the Academy whose parents/guardians willingly agree and support the Academy’s policies. Unless parents/guardians and educators cooperate, the student cannot progress to their fullest potential. In short, LCA staff will work with a child to the best of their ability as long as parents/guardians work in good faith with them. If you wish to schedule a Parent/Teacher conference please call or email the teacher to do so. Good discipline originates in the home. The parent/guardian is the first teacher of their child and should develop in the child good behavior habits and proper attitudes toward school. Motivation is the positive element initiated to inspire achievement. Consistency, love, and interest build the student’s self-image and confidence and inspire the student to further success. A child who is told the parent has confidence in them will tend to act accordingly. Praise, compliment, and encourage your child in order to build character. In order to foster good parent/school involvement, a parent/guardian should:

1. Recognize that the teacher represents the parent/guardian while the child is in school.2. Teach the child respect for the law, authority, the rights of others, and for private and public property.3. Arrange for prompt and regular school attendance and comply with attendance rules and procedures.4. Work with the Academy in carrying out recommendations made in the best interest of the child.

15

5. Talk with the child about school activities; show an active interest in his report cards and progress: a) Do you encourage your child to be enthusiastic about their school work? b) Does your child schedule sufficient time for home study/review? c) Is there a suitable, quiet place to study at home at a regularly scheduled time?d) Are pencils, pens, paper, books, dictionary, ruler, etc., readily available?e) Do you have family agreements that are kept regarding the use of telephone and TV?f) What do you suggest as a substitute when you are told there is no homework?Consider: - Reading - a continuous assignment for everyone, including the Bible, appropriate magazines,

newspapers, and books chosen for enjoyment. - Reviewing - class notes, arithmetic processes, grammar usage, and spelling. - Research - Science or other long- term projects that have been assigned. Parents’/guardians’ interest and support at home are important to the student and greatly appreciated by their supervisor. Parents/guardians should assist their student in reviewing for any tests to be taken the following day. Students should be ready to test shortly after the morning Opening/Devotions.

P. Fire, Tornado and Lockdown Drills For the safety of students, fire, tornado and lockdown drills will be held during the school year. Each supervisor will be with their group. In the event of an actual lockdown, visitors, including parents/guardians, will NOT be allowed into the building. All doors to the building will be locked and the children will be escorted to an area out of harm’s way. When the lockdown is over, students will be released. For your peace of mind, we will send out a message on REMIND to let you know what is happening. We strongly encourage you to opt into this system as soon as school starts.

Emergency Evacuation of Building In the event that Liberty Christian Academy must be evacuated, the students will be taken to the City Hall parking lot on Crockett Street. Students will NOT be released to parents from an evacuation scenario without permission from a teacher. This is also done for the safety of your child.

Q. Search for Suspicion of Illegal or Unauthorized Materials LCA staff reserve the right to check a student’s personal belongings in the event the Academy suspects the student possesses an unapproved item. A search may be conducted without the student’s or the parents’/guardians’ permission. Registration of the student in the Academy constitutes parental consent to such search. This includes the following areas:

1. Automobiles on the school property 2. Backpacks, purses, pockets, duffle bags, notebooks, binders, etc. 3. Lockers, desks, offices, etc.

VI. Standard of Conduct Each Upper Learning Center student must sign a Standard of Conduct Form, agreeing to strive toward unquestionable character in the areas of conduct, speech and attitude. We expect them to cooperate with and assist the school staff in maintaining safety, order and discipline.

Any student observing questionable activities or overhearing conversations which are contrary to the policies of this Academy should immediately discuss the matter with the administration. This is not tattling.

A. Courtesy Students of the Academy are expected to treat everyone with the proper respect and show proper deference to those in authority. LCA students are expected to act in an orderly and respectful manner, always careful to maintain good Christian standards of courtesy and kindness even when others do not. They are to behave in a responsible manner, always exercising self-discipline.

B. Cheating Students are expected to uphold the standard of honesty and genuine Christian character. Scoring violations, writing down answers from the score key, bringing answers to the testing table, and sharing PACEs or PACE reviews with another student will cause a student to be subject to immediate disciplinary action.

C. Disregard for AuthorityStudents shall not fail to comply with directives given by school personnel (insubordination). They may not leave the school grounds or school-sponsored events without permission. This standard of conduct also applies to behavior in school vehicles and school-sponsored events. Talking back, sarcasm addressed to those in authority, complaining, gossiping, etc., are subject to immediate disciplinary action. The students must not refuse to accept disciplinary management techniques assigned by a supervisor or principal without repercussions as outlined in the Disciplinary Policies.

D. Stealing At LCA students are taught the proper respect for one another’s property. Taking any item that belongs to another student or borrowing without permission or as a practical joke will constitute stealing. Stealing will not be tolerated.

E. Vandalism The facilities of Liberty Lighthouse Church and Liberty Christian Academy belong to God; therefore, any damage or defacing of items on the property will result in immediate

20

Page 21: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

disciplinary action. Any cost for repair or replacement will be the responsibility of the offending student’s parent.

F. Language LCA students are expected to be careful to maintain good Christian standards of clean language. Students are to refrain from swearing, cursing and using the Lord’s name in vain, but also from vulgar and slang expressions including obscene gestures which are offensive. They are not to threaten a student, employee, or volunteer, including off school property. Any student who participates in or talks about such activities is subject to immediate disciplinary action.

G. Mistreatment of OthersOur students are not to engage in bullying, harassment, or making hit lists. Any conduct that constitutes sexual or gender-based harassment or sexual abuse, whether by word, gesture, or any other conduct, directed toward another person, including a student, employee or volunteer will not be tolerated. This includes dating violence and indecent exposure of any kind of immodesty. They will not participate in hazing or cause an individual to act through the use of or threat of force (coercion). They are not to commit extortion or blackmail (obtaining money or an object of value from an unwilling person). Our students will not engage in inappropriate verbal, physical, or sexual conduct directed toward another person. The privacy of others will be respected.

I. Worldly Pursuits Students of the Academy are expected to refrain from talking about or engaging in: drinking alcohol beverages, use of illegal drugs and misuse of legal drugs, reading and/or watching pornography, homosexuality, and fornication. Any student who participates in or talks about any such activities is subject to immediate disciplinary action.

21

Page 22: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

Students of LCA pledge to uphold the Academy's standards against cheating, swearing, using tobacco, gambling, drinking alcoholic beverages, using narcotics, or using indecent language and will act in a very orderly and respectful manner. They also pledge to strive to be of unquestionable character in dress, conduct, and other areas of life.

Students of the Academy agree to abide by the standards of conduct and other regulations expected of each student enrolled in Liberty Christian Academy while they are a student of the Academy, and will not give the impression to students, parents, or faculty that they are not in harmony with the goals, aims, and standards of Liberty Christian Academy.

K. Fighting Fighting will result in the discipline of both parties, not just the initiator. If a student is pushed or hit by another student, then the appropriate response is not to retaliate but to immediately come to an authority figure.

L. Racist BehaviorRecognizing that God creates all humans of every race, color, and nationality equal, LCA demands that all students be treated with dignity, kindness, grace, and respect. No racist jokes, comments, slang terms, or name-calling will be tolerated.

M. Possession of Prohibited ItemsStudents shall not possess or use: fireworks of any kind, smoke or stink bombs or any other pyrotechnic device. Do not bring pocketknives or any other small knife. Also prohibited are tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, and vapor inhalation products of any kind (including but not limited to electronic cigarettes, vaporizer pens, inhalation material and substances, support devices, etc.). Do not bring matches or a lighter. A laser pointer is not allowed for other than approved use. They must respect the opinion of the pastor or principal if they determine a danger exists regarding any article not generally considered to be a weapon.

N. Technology Resources and the InternetLCA students shall not attempt to access or circumvent passwords or other security related information of the school, students, or employees. They are not to upload or create computer viruses, including off school property. They shall not attempt to alter, destroy, or disable Liberty Christian Academy technology resources including, but not limited to computers and related equipment, school data, the data of others, or other networks connected to the school’s system, including off school property. employees, or volunteers, including off school property. They will maintain a high code of ethics and not send, post or possess electronic messages that are abusive, obscene, sexually oriented, threatening, harassing, damaging to another’s reputation, or illegal, including cyber bullying and “sexting,” either on or off school property.

O. Cell Phones and other Electronic devices.Student drivers may keep a cell phone in the vehicle or checked in at the Academy office upon arrival. All cell phones, iPod, iPad, tablets and other electronic devices must be checked in at the Academy office upon arrival. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action which may include not only demerits, but also having the device taken by the Principal for a period up to 10 days.

VII. Disciplinary Policies Liberty Christian Academy is not meant to be a correctional institution. It is designed to work with the home, but not take the place of parents who have experienced difficulty in fulfilling their God-given roles.

A. Home and Academy Cooperation Liberty Christian Academy expects full cooperation from both student and parent in the educational process. If at any time the Academy feels that this cooperation is lacking the parent may be asked to withdraw their child. Attendance at Liberty Christian Academy is a privilege, not a right. Even though a student has not broken any specific rule or regulation, we expect them to abide by the spirit of the law as well as to abide by the letter of the law.

Complaining will not be tolerated! If your child does come home complaining about a policy, rule, or discipline - please follow this procedure:

1. Give the staff the benefit of the doubt. 2. Realize that all children report from an emotional bias and usually do not include

all of the information. 3. Understand that the Academy has reasons for every rule; that the rules are

enforced without partiality or favor; and that when there is no longer need for a certain rule, that rule will cease to exist.

4. Fully support the administration, and PLEASE call the Academy office for all the facts.

B. Demerits

23

Page 24: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

LCA’s strategy for discipline is the demerit system which is designed to give students and parents another objective picture of the student's general attitude and behavior.

C. Detention The paramount rule is Do Right! Demerits are earned for disturbances or broken rules. Three demerits in one day result in after school detention from 3:00 to 3:45 the following day. Students who earn more than three demerits in one day will be taken to the Principals office where a parent will be contacted. Students serve detentions by doing PACE work (homework or extra--not counting for the next day’s goals). For behavioral detention, students will receive a written assignment from staff. If written assignment is insufficiently completed due to not being busy, students will repeat detention. Lunch detentions may also be served for less serious infractions that result in more than one demerit. A disciplinary referral form will be issued for a parent signature for any infraction resulting in an after-school detention.

D. Corporal Discipline Liberty Christian Academy will NOT administer any form of corporal punishment.

E. Disciplinary Probation Multiple detentions in one week will result in a conference with the parents, Principal, and supervisor. The student may be placed on probation. If the administration believes that the situation is not changing, the parents may be asked to withdraw the child from Liberty Christian Academy.

F. Out of School Suspension The following behavior will result in a three day out of school suspension.

1. Breaking into, vandalizing, or damaging the campus or property on campus including technology and electronic resources, offices, furniture, and other equipment – with graffiti or by other means. (Students are required to pay for repairs.)

2. Bringing or threatening to bring weapons to school – such as knives, martial arts paraphernalia, or fireworks.

3. Possessing pornographic, lewd, immodest, or inappropriate material on campus.4. Possessing or using any alcoholic beverages on campus or off campus.5. Possessing or using tobacco products.

6. Stealing. 7. Fighting or bullying.

The following behavior will result in in-school suspension.24

Page 25: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

1. Physical contact (other than fighting) that the Principal deems inappropriate.2. Second offense in using curse words.3. Continuing disrespect and or disobedience to any staff member.4. Forging parent or staff signature or initials.

5. Cheating (repeated cheating will result in an out of school suspension)

G. Expulsion A destructive, critical, and cynical attitude grieves the Holy Spirit and is destructive to Christian growth and Christian fellowship. If at any time a student manifests a detrimental influence or spirit of controversy at the Academy or displays a spirit contrary to the purpose and principles for which the Academy stands, they are subject to expulsion. The following behavior will result in the student coming under review by the administration and school board for immediate expulsion:

1. Bringing a gun to school.2. Striking a teacher, staff member, or volunteer.3. Arrest or involvement in crimes other than minor traffic tickets. 4. Underage drinking. 5. Use of mind altering substances including but not limited to narcotics.

VIII. Academic Policies

A. Grading Scale Liberty Christian Academy endeavors to train young people to maximize their God-given potential academic abilities. LCA is committed to uphold an academic standard of excellence. Primary students in PACE levels Kg-2nd grade must make a passing score of 90% on each PACE test in order to advance to the next PACE. Students from PACE level 3 and up must make a passing score of 80% on each PACE test in order to advance to the next PACE. Word Building and Etymology require a 90% for passing grade. The grading scale is as follows:

% Letter

Grade

% Letter

Grade

% LetterGrade

% LetterGrade

97-100 A+ 87-89 B+ 77-79 C+ 67-69 D+

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

For high school students earning high school credits, LCA uses a 4.0 GPA (grade point average) scale. This is the standard scale at most colleges and high schools per The College Board with weight as follows:

Scale %4.0 97-1004.0 93-963.7 90-923.3 87-893.0 83-862.7 80-822.3 77-792.0 73-761.7 70-721.3 67-691.0 65-660.0 Below 65

B. Standardized Achievement Tests Liberty Christian Academy uses standardized achievement tests. This assessment is given in April of each year and is administered in a controlled environment by an academic supervisor. These assessments are required for all LCA students in grade levels KG–12 (including seniors who have completed their course of studies before the testing date).

C. Curriculum In the 1960s, many students were not performing at their grade levels. This fact compelled many parents to question the very structure of the conventional educational system. To address these concerns, Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) designed a Biblically based educational program geared to meet the learning needs of the individual child. This program consists of self-instructional, Godly character-building, individually prescribed, mastery-based curriculum and material. The pioneering work of A.C.E. features a curriculum assuring parents of:

A solid, back-to-basics education for their children. A course of study individualized to meet a child’s specific needs and learning

capabilities. A program incorporating Godly character-building and wisdom principles.

26

Page 27: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

The educational concept of A.C.E. was built on five basic laws of learning:

The student must be placed on a level of curriculum where they can best perform. The student must set reasonable and appropriate goals that can be achieved in a

reasonable and prescribed period of time. The student must receive motivation through encouragement and support, and

achieve control through guidance and discipline, in order to assimilate, use, and experience the educational material.

The student’s learning must have appropriate measurement applied to the results.

The student’s learning must receive recognition and reward for its value, effort, and significance.

The Accelerated Christian Education program is individualized. It is designed to allow each student to work at his own level of achievement, which may vary from subject to subject.

The core curriculum is intended to provide a quick start for beginning students; however, it can do much more than that. The A.C.E. curriculum enables the student to progress through high school, adequately preparing him for college, or for performance in the working world.

The term “core” is used to distinguish the foundational courses from the enhancement courses in Accelerated Christian Education's expanded curriculum. The core curriculum provides the student with academics, skill building, reading practice, character and wisdom training, and knowledge of God and His Word.

The core curriculum includes basic academic disciplines that provide a student's essential educational needs: Math, English, Literature and Creative Writing, Social Studies, and Science are our core curriculum. Each curriculum course level consists of 12 PACEs. Normally a student will complete a minimum of 60 PACEs in one academic year in their core subjects; 72 PACES would include 12 PACES in Word Building. This amount may vary depending on a student's academic ability.

D. Homework The responsibility for scholastic achievement is placed on the student. A common goal for the staff is that no student should need to take academic work home. The goals set each day by the student and reviewed by the supervisor are no more than the student is capable of completing during the normal academic day. However, should the student not complete his or her goals for the day, they will usually be required to complete the work at home. Should the student have homework, a green homework slip will come home with the student. This homework slip must be signed by the parent/guardian.

27

Page 28: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

E. Graduation Requirements Graduation from LCA is determined by achievement, not chronology. The A.C.E. curriculum is designed to enable a student to complete the graduation requirements on a schedule commensurate with ability. Some students may complete the requirements earlier than others. Time is not the deciding factor; learning is; therefore, students will not receive a diploma until they have met all requirements and all necessary fees. All tests must be taken and processed under supervision of LCA staff. Texas State History is a requirement for graduation. Once enrolled in LCA all high school students are required to earn all their credits through LCA. The purpose of this policy is to protect the integrity of our academic program.

Each student enrolled in 9th grade or higher will receive an Academic Projection each year. The Academic Projection will be based upon one of the four courses of study offered by LCA and will determine what type of diploma the student will ultimately earn. The decision regarding the course of study will be established by the parent and student in conjunction with the supervisor.

The supervisor will produce the Academic Projection after the course of study is agreed upon, listing all courses required for completion before a diploma may be issued. The parent will receive two copies of the Academic Projection. One copy must be signed by the parent and returned to LCA. Each year after re-enrollment the supervisor will update the projection to reflect the student’s ongoing progress and completion of academic requirements. The signed Academic Projection is considered a contract between the parent and the Academy concerning all academic requirements. Completion of a course of study will be based upon completion of the most recently signed Academic Projection. The Academic Projection will contain all credits accepted by LCA that were previously earned along with the Academy’s additional academic requirements. Students are encouraged to attain the highest possible course of study even if it may take an additional year.

F. BibleFor consistency in preaching and teaching LCA has determined to use the King James Version (KJV), New International Version(NIV) or New Living Translation (NLT)

of the Bible and they shall be the only translations used by the students. The Bible must be in book form and not an electronic device.

G. Scripture MemoryLCA intentionally integrates Scripture memorization as a part of the students’ educational process. Students are to memorize God’s Word weekly to be qualified for privileges and quarterly Honor Roll. Memorizing God’s Word does take time and

28

Page 29: Administration - libertychristiansherman.com Handbook …  · Web viewis to train Christian youth in the principles of God's Word, stressing such vital areas as ... All immunizations

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Student Handbook

discipline, but like any spiritual discipline, the reward of growing closer to God is beyond measure.

H. ChapelIn order to provide every student the opportunity to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and to encourage every student to dedicate their life to Christ in Christian service LCA starts each morning with Chapel. High School students are also required to attend Bible Class which is taught by Pastor Stan McNutt.

I. Report Cards and Other Reports

1. Congratulations Slips Every time a student completes a PACE they receive a star and they are given a Congratulations Slip. These slips will be sent home in the weekly Parent/Teacher communicator folder. Completed PACES will also be sent home so parents are able to better see their child’s progress.

2. Report Cards The Academy's grading system is designed to give parents an accurate indication of the student's progress. Progress Reports are sent home to the parents at the end of the quarter (9 weeks). See school calendar for dates report cards will come home.

J. Awards Program Ribbons, certificates, plaques, letters, and trophies are presented at the annual Awards Program held at the close of each regular Academy year. Students strive during the year to attain awards in the following categories: Academics, Athletics, Music, Speech, and Character.

K. Field Trips Periodic field trips will be taken to enrich learning. They are a fun way to provide students with interactive learning experience and to spark their love for learning. A natural outgrowth of such trips, which are conducted under the supervision of adults on every occasion, is that students are disciplined in the art of self-control and gracious deportment in various social conditions.

IX. XIV. Miscellaneous

A. School Photographs School photos are taken once during the school year, usually in the fall. Parents may purchase school photos for an additional fee. The school photos taken will be in the yearbook.

B. Transcripts LCA is pleased to offer accredited transcripts for enrolled students. A parent may obtain an unofficial copy at any time by calling the Academy office. To protect the academic integrity of the transcript, LCA prefers to send official transcripts directly to colleges and universities. However, if a parent needs an official transcript sent to the home, it will be sent in a sealed envelope, with a stamp stating that this is an official transcript. Once sealed, a transcript envelope must only be opened by a college or university staff member. Most colleges will NOT accept any transcript that is not presented to them in this fashion. LCA will provide 2 official transcripts per student at no charge. After this, there will be a $5 charge per official transcript. This charge must be paid before the transcript is sent. Transcript requests may be made by emailing [email protected] or faxing 903-617-5483. To expedite the request, please provide the name of the student at the time of enrollment, the student’s birth date, type of transcript needed (official or unofficial), the institute’s address, and a contact number should there be any questions.

C. Pledges to the U.S. Flag, Christian Flag, and the Bible 1. Pledge to the U. S. Flag “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” 2. Pledge to the Christian Flag “I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen and coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe.” 3. Pledge to the Bible “I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.”

X. Philosophy and Objectives Students from kindergarten through twelfth grade receive superior education from qualified, spiritually minded Christian teachers and administrators at LCA. A distinctively Christian philosophy of knowledge and learning combines with serious academics and home reinforcement to produce responsible young people with outstanding character.

A. Every child is unique with vast potential, but dependent on others for spiritual, physical, mental, and behavioral development. Therefore, a student who enrolls in LCA will be educated as a whole child and that education will be based upon a Biblical worldview.

B. LCA holds to the principle that education should be available to all children. The Academy will therefore endeavor to expand its educational opportunities to parents and children of all abilities and all racial, economic, and cultural backgrounds who desire this educational base and are willing to accept the Academy’s standards.

C. Every child develops at a unique, individual pace based upon their developmental level, learning patterns, motivation, and academic potential. The LCA curriculum is designed and to assist each student achieve a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, develop a Christ-like character, lay a strong academic foundation, and to realize his optimum potential for maturation physically, spiritually, and mentally.

XI. Statement of Faith

A. Our MissionBy pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, by the word of truth, (2 Corinthians 6:6-7) we preach the Gospel of Christ (Romans 1:15-16) and set our students in the way of wisdom. (Proverbs 4:11-13)

B. Our MotiveOur motive is to see parents add Bible based academic instruction to Godly parenting and church fellowship.  Ephesians 6:4 tells Christian fathers to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We believe that the educational opportunities provided by the government no longer meet this Biblical mandate. We seek to be an extension of the Godly home and model our learning experience after the family. We encourage everyone involved to accept Jesus Christ as personal Savior and serve Him faithfully.

C. Our MottoOur Motto, “Mentoring In Truth,” reminds us of our goal to continually teach and preach the truths of God’s Word. The Scriptures this motto is based upon are Deuteronomy 6:6-7, John 17:17, and III John 4.

D. Our MethodOur method is very different from that of the most schools. Instead of employing dynamic lecturers to achieve our high academic standard, we instruct our students to labor according to the principles of God's Word. (Proverbs 14:23).  We instill in them a personal responsibility toward God, for the task at hand. (Romans 14:12) In time, our students come to understand that it is their individual responsibility to study, work and learn. (I Thessalonians 4:11)

We love the Bible. (Psalm 119:165) We put a verse of Scripture with everything we do. (Matthew 4:4). The staff sets an example of Godly characteristics such as honesty (II Corinthians 8:21), diligence (Colossians 3:23), and perseverance. (Galatians 6:9) We encourage and expect the students to follow that example. (Hebrews 13:7)

Children who realize the importance of God's perfect Word become successful academically (Psalm 119:99). We realize our duty to the parents and God to protect our students from any and all offenses. (Matthew 18:6) We give students an environment that is safe, quiet, orderly, helpful and encouraging. (Psalm 107:30). If they love it here, they will learn here.

ARRIVAL TIME Students are not admitted into the building before 7:30 am. Please plan for your student(s) to arrive no earlier than that time. All students arriving before 7:50 am. must report to the church building. Students are not allowed into the learning center without their teacher. Classes start promptly at 8:00. Please see Tardy Policy below.

MORNING DROP-OFF PROCEDUREIf you drop your student off in the morning by car, we are requesting that you drop them at the church front door. A staff member will be on duty at 7:30 a.m.

AFTERNOON PICK-UP PROCEDUREK-4th grade students will be picked up at the church building located beside the main building. A staff member will load your child into the vehicle. Please remain in your vehicle at all times. For K-4 pickup, please do NOT pull through the pickup line closest to the building, but rather pull through the pickup line in main parking lot of the church. Please remember that students can only be picked up at the designated pick up area. Students will wait under the breezeway until a staff member sees their ride; they will then be called to that attending staff member and loaded into a parent’s vehicle. This will keep students from running to cars randomly and risk being hit.
