And the mountains

echoed

By

Khaled Hosseini

A new novel about how we love, how we take

care of one another, and how the choices we

make resonate through generations. In this

tale revolving around not just parents and

children but brothers and sisters, cousins and

caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways

in which families nurture, wound, betray,

honor, and sacrifice for one another; and

how often we are surprised by the actions of

those closest to us, at the times that matter

most. Following its characters and the

ramifications of their lives and choices and

loves around the globe--from Kabul to Paris

to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos-

-the story expands gradually outward,

becoming more emotionally complex and

powerful with each turning page.

Boys without names

By

Kathmira Sheth

For eleven-year-old Gopal and his family, life

in their rural Indian village is over: We stay,

we starve, his baba has warned. With the

darkness of night as cover, they flee to the

big city of Mumbai in hopes of finding work

and a brighter future. Gopal is eager to help

support his struggling family until school

starts, so when a stranger approaches him

with the promise of a factory job, he jumps

at the offer.

But Gopal has been deceived. There is no

factory, just a small, stuffy sweatshop where

he and five other boys are forced to make

beaded frames for no money and little food.

The boys are forbidden to talk or even to call

one another by their real names. In this

atmosphere of distrust and isolation, locked

in a rundown building in an unknown part of

the city, Gopal despairs of ever seeing his

family again.

But late one night, when Gopal decides to

share kahanis, or stories, he realizes that

storytelling might be the boys' key to holding

on to their sense of self and their hope for

any kind of future. If he can make them feel

more like brothers than enemies, their lives

will be more bearable in the shop—and they

might even find a way to escape. CURRICULUM RECOMMENDED: Suggested Use: English Language Arts Grade 10- The Challenges of Life (A10)

Mennonites don’t dance

By

Darcie Hossack

This vibrant collection of short fictions

explores how families work, how they are

torn apart, and, in spite of differences and

struggles, brought back together. Darcie

Friesen Hossack's stories in Mennonites Don't

Dance offer an honest, detailed look into the

experiences of children - both young and

adult - and their parents and grandparents,

exploring generational ties, sins, penance

and redemption.

Taking place primarily on the Canadian

prairies, the families in these stories are

confronted by the conflict between tradition

and change - one story sees a daughter-in-

law's urban ideals push and pull against a

mother's simple, rural ways, in another, a

daughter raised in the Mennonite tradition

tries to break free from her upbringing to

escape to the city in search of a better life.

Children learn the rules of farm life, and

parents learn that their decisions, in spite of

all good intentions, can carry dire

consequences. Suggested Use: ELA A30 Canadian Voices (First Nations, Metis, Saskatchewan and Canadian texts only)

D-Day to Berlin

From June 1944 to May 1945, US, British,

and Canadian troops fought an intense

campaign against the might of the battle-

hardened German Wehrmacht. The campaign

ultimately ended in victory, as German forces

in northern Europe surrendered, but the

fighting was hard and there were many

difficulties along the way and many problems

to solve. The first task of the Allies was to

land on a hostile shore in Normandy, where,

under the direction of Erwin Rommel, the

Germans had put up an array of obstacles to

trap the invaders on the beaches. Just

getting the troops ashore on D-Day was a

massive achievement in itself, but then

advancing from the beachheads against the

experienced Panzer formations of the

German Army Group West proved a

harrowing task. Eventually, Omar Bradley's

First Army fought its way out in Operation

Cobra, opening the way for George Patton's

Third Army to spearhead an advance to the

Seine and recapture Paris while the British

under Bernard Montgomery advanced up the

Channel coast.

The Allied advance stalled in autumn 1944,

partly because of logistics problems but also

because of the still redoubtable fighting

qualities of the German Army, which showed

at Arnhem that it was not to be treated

lightly. The Germans launched a massive

counterattack in the Ardennes in December

1944, an attack that for a time threatened to

cut the Allies in two. After the defeat of the

Ardennes offensive, the next great task for

the Allies was crossing the mighty Rhine,

which they did in a series of well planned and

expertly executed moves early in 1945. The

stage was now set for a general push into

Germany, which saw mass German surrender

as the western Allies linked up with Soviet

forces coming from the east.

Settling Saskatchewan

By

Alan B. Anderson

Includes bibliographical references (pages

411-443) and index.

Who knew that Blacks settled in

Saskatchewan before the First World War?

That people of Lebanese and Syrian origins

immigrated to the southern part of the

province in the early 1900s? That Welsh

settlers arrived following years of

misadventure in South America? That a small

band of Lakota Sioux, descendants of

refugees who fled the United States after the

Battle of Little Big Horn, remain in

Saskatchewan today? In Settling

Saskatchewan, author Alan Anderson

expertly identifies and explains the patterns

of immigration and settlement in the

province and further enlightens us on the

many peoples who now comprise its

extraordinarily diverse cultural mosaic. They

came from all parts of the world, from all

walks of life and they continue to come

today. Together with the indigenous

aboriginal population, they have made

Saskatchewan what it is. Combining

historical, sociological, and demographic

perspectives, Settling Saskatchewan offers

the most detailed and comprehensive
