Memorial Day is over, sun is shining once
again and it is always a pleasure to see so
many of the residents, in the community,
walking the grounds, sitting outdoors and
enjoying the pleasant weather.
As a community you did a fantastic job in
preparing for the Electrical Shut-off that
occurred when the new generators were
installed. Due to this prior preparation no
negative events occurred. Kudos to all
involved.
Please see your calendar for all upcoming
June 2016 events scheduled.
The Holiday of Shavuot will be celebrated
on Sunday June 12th and Monday June 13th
which is the 6th and 7th day of the month
of Sivan. The Torah was given by G‑d to
the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more
than 3300 years ago. Every year on the
Holiday of Shavuot we renew our
acceptance of G‑d’s gift, and G‑d
“re-gives” the Torah. The word Shavuot
means “weeks.” It marks the completion of
the seven-week counting period between
Passover and Shavuot.
Our yearly BBQ, which will be held on
Sunday June 26, 2016, will once again
have a patriotic theme so please wear your
red, white and blue accessories. Last
year’s event was a great success and so
much fun. Exciting activities are once
again being planned. The gazebo and area
around it has been refreshed and will be
ready for the party.
We are requesting that reservations for
yourselves and family members be made by
June 17th 2016. Reservations can be made
by contacting the Concierge, McKenzie
Walsh at 973 929-2736 or Community
Life Coordinator, Cheryl Fisch at
973 929-2731. Please see posted fliers for
more information.
There will be an Administrator’s Tea on
Wednesday, June 22nd 2016 at 3:15 PM. I
look forward to seeing many of you to discuss
all relevant issues.
My door is always open and I welcome any
discussion of concerns with residents, family
members and staff.
Enjoy the beautiful weather.

Naomi’s Rhyme Time
The Window
The bedroom window was misty,
Raindrops splattered the glass.
The wind was rustling swaying trees,
A sound that would not pass.
We were surely facing, another rainy day,
Important to be ready if rainstorms came our way.
A scurry for boots and umbrellas,
For raincoats and weather gear,
Be ready for the rainstorm,
We know is coming here.
Then to the shower and closet,
Appropriate clothes, a must.
When rainstorms are descending,
We need preparation, not just trust.
Then swing the front door open,
What is it that we see?
A sky aglow with sunlight,
Can that really be?
From blinding rain to sunlight,
So quickly and beautifully?
From bleak rain to sunshine, the day can take a turn,
Giving the light and blue sky for which we always yearn.
Life, just like the weather can sometimes be a threat.
But often life can bring you joy, as good as you can get.
So when raindrops sprinkle on your window pane,
Remember that soon, like life, there’ll be sunshine again.

. Lester Legacies by: Naomi Zaslow
A vigorous, determined, and robust resident in Weston Lester Senior Living, is Brooklyn born Ruth Muraskin. In the
almost a year she’s been here, she has participated in programs, presentations, brain games, the Lester Chorus, while lending
her beautiful voice and knowledge of lyrics whenever and wherever appropriate.
Her parents came to the United States from Russia as children in the 1900’s and she, her parents and brother lived in
Brooklyn. In elementary school she won recognition for singing “Oh Johnny” a la “Wee Bonnie Baker” to classmate John.
She attended New Utrecht High School and enjoyed English and Music while enrolled in the Commercial course. She was in
a co-op program where she attended school one week and worked one week at a NY law firm.
During World War II her brother joined the Army Air Force. Ruth was a member of the left wing group, Youth For
Democracy and collected papers and other items for the war effort at collection parties in their basement.
Her future husband was part of her father’s left wing group that met mornings for breakfast. Her father invited Marvin to
meet Ruth. When she turned down an invitation for a date, her mother interceded agreeing to pay the tab. It took time for
further convincing, but the date eventually led to marriage.
“Marvin was not always ‘nice’, “ Ruth says. “but he was honest, devoted, a good husband, and very active and devoted to
the political left”. He worked as an upholsterer and later in lumber firm office. Ruth became part of the Jewish Peoples
Philharmonic Chorus and performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
“The 1950’s were a very important part of my life” she says. Their two daughters and a son were born between 1950 and
1959, They were active in Synagogue affairs, and Marvin was a “Minyonaire” known for his dedicated attendance at
synagogue services. He was a member of Knights of Pythias and Jewish War Veterans. Marvin could not carry a tune, but
loved to hear her sing, and “kvelled” appropriately. He had open heart surgery twice and in 2001 he died.
Ruth returned home in time to see the World Trade Center, visible from her bedroom window, and the smoke and bombing
as it occurred. Ruth worked for Zim Lines American/Israeli Shipping Company. She has visited Building One of the World
Trade Center.
Her son, who makes excellent presentations at Lester, is a Negotiator for the NJ Teachers Union and has written books on
Jewish history and Jewish heroines. One daughter is a school bus driver, one a security guard in Washington, DC. They
have 3 grandchildren.
Ruth is very concerned about morality in today’s society and is
apprehensive about the future. “There is too much
selfishness, and too little concern about courtesy and decency” Ruth
says she is a moral person and tries to be fair and honest with herself and
others. She is grateful to be a t Lester, and we are grateful for her
interest, honesty and talent.

Chief Operating Officer
Beware of Scammers by E. Anne Lipman (Heller Resident)
From the internet. “Senior citizens all too often are seen by con artists, scammers, and unscrupulous businesses as tempting targets,” Acting Attorney General Hoffman said. “They recruit their victims by phone, letter, email, or even door-to-door solicitation. Their stories will vary, but the goal is the same: To fool their victims into giving away either their hard-earned money, or the personal information that is valuable to identity thieves.”
Yesterday my daughter received this email from the Summit Police Department
Thanks for your email on IRS Scam Alert.
“Dear Elizabeth Freeman, There is a common scam that is hitting our area today. A person will call saying they are from the IRS and you owe a tax payment that must be made immediately to avoid criminal prosecution. DO NOT FALL FOR IT. The IRS does not call. The IRS will never direct you to make a payment over the phone. The IRS does not ask you to confirm your Social Security number, date of birth or bank routing or account numbers over the phone.“
Coincidently, yesterday I received the following message on my answer machine. A female voice said {verbatim} “Hello, This call is officially a final notice from the IRS Internal Revenue Service. The reason for this call is that the IRS is filing a law suit against you. To get more Information on this case file call immediately our department number 413-644-5056 I repeat 413-644-5056 Thank You.”
Division of Consumer Affairs Acting Director Steve Lee said, “Fortunately, consumers and their loved ones can take control and protect themselves by watching for the various types of scams that are out there – and by resolving never to pay money, give away their personal information, or click on a link or attachment without being absolutely sure they know who they are dealing with.”
These Con artists can be friendly, persistent persuasive, intimidating and threatening. Just remember their goal is to separate you from your money. It’s a time for you to become tight fisted. Stay calm, when in doubt, shout for help. Call a trusted family member, call Cheryl, call Marlene,. Let’s hope given time these ruthless types will get tired of calling and leave us alone.
