Mission Statement

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai, formerly known as
the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in
July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of
India, and the United Nations. The Institute is under the administrative control of the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
The Institute serves as a regional centre for Training and Research in Population
Studies for the ESCAP region. The Institute was re-designated to its present title in
1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a
'Deemed University' in August 19, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The recognition has
facilitated the award of recognized degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way
for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. The faculty members
and the supporting staff belong to diverse interdisciplinary background with
specialisation in some core areas of population sciences, trained in India and abroad.
The Institute is the hub of population and health related teaching and research in
India, playing a vital role for planning and development of the country. During the
past years, students from different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and
North America have been trained at the Institute. The alumni of the institute are
occupying prestigious positions at reputed national and international organisations,
universities, research institutes and non-governmental organisations.
The Institute offers seven different Post-Graduate, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral
courses, admission to which for the academic session 2019-20 is announced hereby.
After completing the course, students of all programmes are well prepared for: (i)
admission to higher degree programmes in the best universities of the world; (ii) a
good career in teaching & research; (iii) multi-disciplinary professional career; or (iv)
independent consultant and specialist in health and development sectors.

Instructions
1. All foreign students with sponsorship on their own/ from any other source will be selected on merit
basis, subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Admission test will not be conducted for the foreign
candidates. Processing fee will not be charged to the foreign candidates while submitting the
application form.
2. Duration of Ph.D. programme is specified for thesis submission and not for fellowship.
3. Number of seats with Government of India (GOI) fellowship for M.Phil. and Integrated
M.Phil./Ph.D. programme are 50.
4. Government of India Fellowships @ Rs. 25,000/- per month for 1st and 2nd year and Rs.28,000/-
per month for 3rd and 4th years available for the Indian students who have qualified NET for
Lectureship in population studies or its inter-disciplinary subjects conducted by the UGC. Such
Ph.D. fellowship also carries a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per year for the first two years and
Rs. 20,500/- for the third year. However the candidates without NET qualification shall be awarded
fellowship @ Rs.12,000/- per month for 1st and 2nd years, and Rs.14,000/- per month for 3rd and 4th
years, with a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per year. In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship
holders will also be considered for admission as per availability of seats.
5. Post-doctoral applicants need not apply online. They are required to send their application along
with supporting documents and comprehensive research proposal to “The Assistant Registrar
(Academic), International Institute for Population Sciences, Govandi Station Road, Deonar,
Mumbai-400088” on or before 1st July 2019.
6. Candidates who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already
appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However,
admission will be cancelled if he/she fails to furnish the final examination results by 30th September,
2019.
7. Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD and female candidates may be considered as per the
Government of India norms.

8. The non-refundable processing fees are Rs. 1000/- for General category, Rs. 500/- for OBC (Non-
Creamy Layer) category and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PWD category.
9. Eligible in-service candidates (with M.Phil. or Pre-Doctoral coursework in Population
Studies/Demography) with financial support from UGC /ICSSR or any other equivalent government
sponsored fellowship need to apply online and appear for entrance test for PhD admission.
10. Foreign candidates with financial support may be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program
without entrance test.
11. Last date for submission of online application is 4th January 2019.
12. All candidates are required to send hard copy of the online application form along with all

16. Five percent relaxation in marks is applicable for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy
layer) and people with differently abled category applying to various courses.
17. Candidates having master degree other than the subjects specified in the list for MPS admission and
having at least two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible for MPS
course.
18. Canvassing in any form for securing admission will disqualify the candidature.

1. MASTER OF ARTS/SCIENCE (M.A./M.Sc.) IN POPULATION STUDIES
Applications are invited for admission to M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies during the academic
session 2019-2021 to commence from 3rd July, 2019.
No. of Seats: 50 Seats with Government of India Fellowship.
Eligibility: Admission to this course is open to all candidates having B.A./B.Sc.. Degree
(passed/appearing) in Anthropology, Development Studies, Economics, Geography, Health Statistics,
Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, Rural Development, Social Work, Sociology and
Statistics from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum of 55% of aggregate
marks/equivalent grade. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided if they
secure financial support from any outside agency.
Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have
already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply.
However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if he/she fails to furnish final result by 30th
September, 2019.
The upper age limit is 25 years as on 30th June, 2019. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates
belonging to reserved categories and female candidates as per Government of India rules only.

Online Entrance Test will comprise objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of
Entrance Test will consist of basic general knowledge, logical reasoning, english grammar, basic
mathematics, population, health, and social science issues. The test venue will be notified in the
Admit Card. Admission test will not be conducted for the foreign candidates and admission will be
offered directly if foreign candidates fulfill the eligibility criteria of the Institute.
Reservation: Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD & female candidates will be considered as per the
Government of India norms only.
Date of Online Test: 10th February, 2019.

Applications are invited for admission to Master of Population Studies (M.P.S.) during the academic
session 2019-2020 to commence from 3rd July, 2019.

Eligibility: Admission to this course is open to all candidates having MA/MSc. degree
(passed/appearing) in Anthropology, Bio-statistics, Development Studies, Economics, Geography,
Health Statistics, Mathematics, Political Science, Population Education, Psychology, Rural
Development, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics from a recognized university in India or abroad
with a minimum of 55% of aggregate marks/equivalent grade. Candidates having Master degree,

will be called for personal interview at IIPS. Final selection will be based on the weighted average of
scores of Online Test and personal interview.
Shortlisted candidates appearing for admission test are entitled to claim sleeper class train fare by the
shortest route on production of original tickets and in case of road journey normal fare will be paid
only for travel by public transport run by a Government body.

Selection Criteria: The admission to M.Phil. course is through a two-stage process; on line test and

5. INTEGRATED M.Phil./Ph.D. IN POPULATION STUDIES/BIO-
STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHY
Applications are invited for admission to Integrated Master of Philosophy (M.PHIL.)/Ph.D. in
Population Studies/Bio-statistics and Demography during the academic session 2019-20 to
commence from 3rd July, 2019. The Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme shall consists of two
academic degree programmes that can be pursued with a single admission procedure taken at the
entry level for M.Phil. degree. Successful completion of M.Phil. degree would facilitate shifting to the
Ph.D. programme. A mid-stream option is available where students can move into Ph.D. programme
after completion of one-semester/six-months coursework and fulfilment of other criteria set by the
Institute.
Eligibility: Admission to this course is open to all candidates having Master’s degree in Population
Studies/Demography/Bio-statistics and Demography/ Bio-statistics and Epidemiology
(passed/appearing) with at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade. Students who have qualified
UGC/CSIR-JRF or any other national level fellowship are encouraged to apply for this programme.
Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from any
outside agency.
Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already appeared/
shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, admission of the
candidate will be cancelled if he/she fails to furnish the final examination result by 30th September
2019.
The upper age limit is 30 years as on 30th June, 2019. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates

Guidelines: The following guidelines are applicable for the Integrated programme with different
options and fellowships:
A. UGC-JRF and other equivalent External Fellowships
i) All students enrolled for the Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes shall undergo fulltime one-
semester coursework for six months.
ii) Only those students who have cleared M.Phil. coursework with A Only and above grade (equivalent
of 65% and above for general students) or B Plus and above grade (equivalent of 55% and above for
SC/ST/OBC/PWD students) are eligible for opting mid-stream option.
iii) Students who have been successful in course work (A Only and above grade for general students
and B-Plus and above grade for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students), but are desirous of completing M.Phil.
can continue and submit the dissertation for the award of M.Phil. degree. Such students desiring to
complete M.Phil. degree are required to submit a formal application.

iv) All other students will continue M.Phil. and submit their dissertation. These students will be allowed
to continue Ph.D. programme, provided they have secured B-Plus and above (equivalent 55%) of
General candidate and B-Only or a b o v e (equivalent of 50% and above for SC/ST/OBC/PWD
students) in M.Phil. degree. However, those external fellowship holders after successfully completing
M.Phil degree (fulfilling eligibility criteria ) need to register for Ph.D program within 15 days of
declaration of M.Phil results.
B. Government of India Fellowship
i) All those who got admission in the Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programme with Government of
India fellowship but subsequently passed JRF or got funding from any other sources and secured A
only and above grade (equivalent of 65% and above for general students) or B Plus and above grade
(equivalent of 55% and above for SC/ST/OBC/PWD students) in course work are eligible for opting
mid-stream option. Such students desiring to move into the Ph.D. programme are required to submit a
formal application.
ii) The students enrolled in Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programme with Government of India
fellowship and not cleared UGC/CSIR-JRF or any other national level fellowship for Ph.D. programme
have to complete the M.Phil. degree and seek fresh admission for Ph.D. programme.

7. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP (P.D.F.)
Applications are invited for admission to the full-time P.D.F. programme of the Institute with Government
of India fellowship for the academic session 2019-2020.
Duration: One year full-time .

Eligibility: Candidates having Ph.D. degree in Population Studies or subjects related with Population,
Health, Gender, and Development are eligible to apply. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for
admission, provided they secure financial support from any outside agency. Female candidates are
encouraged to apply for the P.D.F.
Desirable: Publication in peer reviewed journal, publication of books, and research reports. The upper
age limit is 40 years as on 30th June, 2019.
Fellowship: The selected Indian candidates will be awarded a Government of India fellowship Rs.
50,000/- per month for one year.
Selection Criteria: Candidates are required to send a hard copy of CV, copies of academic qualification
and work experience, publication reprints, comprehensive research proposal along with a covering letter
to “The Assistant Registrar (Academic), International Institute for Population Sciences, Govandi
Station Road, Deonar, Mumbai-400088” on or before 1st July 2019. The non-refundable processing

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) has started the need-based distance course with the recommendation of UGC in the field of population and inter-relationship between population and development namely; M.A. in Population Studies. The deadline for submission of application for this course for academic session 2019-2023 (3rd Batch) is 1st July 2019.
Eligibility criteria for admission: Admission to this course is open to all those with a Bachelor’s degree in any social science subject/Health Sciences/Mathematics/ Statistics or any similar degree recognized by Indian/Foreign universities with 50 percentage marks for general candidates and 45 percentage marks for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and PWD category. Candidates having master’s degree and also those who are having work experience will be given due weightage. Dispatch of self instruction course materials to the students by post: The self-instructional course study materials are sent to the students in four lots by post/courier services. The materials include instructions for self-study and self-assessment exercises (assignments).
Contact programmes in the Institute: Contact programme of one-week duration is organized at the Institute in June and December every year. During the contact programme a thorough feedback on the course material sent is given in addition to the laboratory exercises related to technical papers, computer applications and preparation of term paper.
Evaluation & Examinations: Written examination is conducted twice in a year (June and December) at the Institute. The written examination is followed by preparation of a Term Paper and Viva-Voce examination. The evaluation is done by direct grading system. In order to qualify the degree, a student is required to write examinations for 68 credits apart from the non-credited papers. Overall there are 17 papers designed for this course.
