1. Programm e Typ e

The typ es of Prog ramm e o ffered for the Ma ster of Comp uter Sc ience d eg ree a re:

(1) a prog ram me whic h shall c onsist of c oursew ork and resea rc h lead ing to the

submission of a d issertation in the c and ida te s a rea of stud y whe reb y thirty perce nt

(30%) or mo re o f the tota l numb er of c red it hours sha ll be for resea rc h; and

(2) a p rog ra m me w hich sha ll c onsist of one hund red perce nt (100%) resea rc h worklead ing to the sub mission o f a d isserta tion.

2. Ad mission Req uireme nts

(1) Throug h Disserta tion Prog ram me

(a ) Qua lifica tions for Ad mission

(i) Bac helor s d eg ree w ith Hono urs or a c om pa rab le de gree in the field of

Co mp uter Sc ience or Informa tion Tec hnology o r in a field relate d to the

study;

o r

(ii) Ba c helors de gree with Hono urs or a c om pa rab le de gree in a programm e

c onsisting of C om puter Sc ience o r Informa tion Tec hnolog y relate d c ourses

or its equivalent;

o r

(iii) Bac helors deg ree in Co mp uter Sc ience or Informa tion Tec hnolog y and :

(A) have w orking expe rience o f at least three ye ars in a p rofession relate dto the f ield;

o r

(B) p roo f of pub lica tions relate d to the field.

o r

(iv) Dip loma in Com puter Sc ience o f University Malaya or a p ost -de gree

d iplom a in the field o f Com pute r Sc ienc e o r Informa tion Tec hnology o f

a nothe r a c c red ited institution;

(3) Eng lish Lang ua ge Profic ienc y

(a ) Foreign c and ida tes a re req uired to:

(i) ha ve a t lea st IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 550 if the ir first degree is from a unive rsity

where Eng lish is no t the me d ium o f instruct ion;

(ii) pass an Eng lish proficienc y test ap p roved by the University.

(b) The Ma ster of Comp uter Sc ienc e Prog ramm e throug h coursew ork and

dissertation shall have a total of thirty-six (36) credit hours comprising of two

parts:

(i) Pa rt I invo lves:

(A) four c ore co urses, eac h three c red it hours; and

(B) four elec tive co urses, ea c h three c red it hou rs.

(ii) Ca nd id ate s ma y be imp osed to enroll in other co urses and ob tain

sa tisfac tory results deeme d nec essa ry b y the Faculty.

(iii) Pa rt II sha ll c onsist o f tw elve (12) cred it hou rs and sha ll invo lve resea rch

lea d ing to the sub mission of a d isserta tion.

(c) Deta ils of c ourses offered sha ll be of those app rove d b y the Sena te from time

to t ime on the recommendation of the Faculty and shall be made known tothe c and ida tes a t the sta rt of ea c h session.

(d ) The list of Sena te a pproved c ourses for the Ma ster of Co mp uter Sc ience

Prog ramm e sha ll be a s indica ted in List 1. Ca nd ida tes sha ll be informe d o f

the prescribed combination of courses for this programme prior to registration

a t the start of the ir st udy p rog ram me.


(a ) This p rogramm e sha ll c onsist of one hund red p ercen t (100 %) resea rch work

lea d ing to the sub mission o f a d isserta tion w hose fo rma t sha ll b e a s stipula ted

1. Course Reg istration


(a ) Reg istra tion for c ourses sha ll be in the w ee k p rior to the c om me nc em ent o f

ea ch sem ester.

(b) A c and ida te sha ll reg ister for a t least six c red it hours of c oursew ork for eac hsemester except for:

(i) the final sem ester of his/ her stud y p rogramme whereby reg istration for less

tha n the stipulated numb er is pe rmitted ;

o r

(ii) c ases where his/ her withd rawa l from a p a rticula r sem ester is app rove d .

(c) Registration for dissertation research work can only be done upon the

c om pletion o f a t lea st tw elve (12) c red it ho urs of c oursew ork.


Unless withdrawal from a particular semester has been granted, a candidate

under the fully resea rc h p rog ramm e w ho is req uired to pass any p resc ribed c ourses,

sha ll registe r for the c ourses in the sem ester the c ourses are o ffered .

2. Supervision

(1) Throug h C ou rsew ork and Disserta tion Prog ra mm e a nd throug h Disserta tion

Programme

(a) The ap po intment of a supe rvisor shall be d one a t the point a ca nd ida te sarea of resea rc h is ap proved .

(b) Where nec essary, the ap po intment of a c o -supe rvisor ma y be do ne.

3. Determination of Research Area

(1) Throug h Coursew ork a nd Disserta tion Prog ram me

The d etermination of resea rc h area shall be do ne p rior to a c and ida te s

em b arkation on resea rc h wo rk.

4. Submission


(a) A c a ndida te shall b e p ermitted to subm it his/ her d issertation upo n co mp leting

(b) A candidate shall submit his/her dissertation before the end of his/her

candidature.
