Review Digital image: made up of dots called pixels
Use Photoshop to add, modify, or delete individual pixels or groups of pixels
Image Resolution
Spacing of pixels in an image, measured in ppi (pixels per inch) or dpi (dots per inch)
Image Size
Physical dimensions of an image, measured in pixels (width x height)

Review Most Photoshop images are composite:
Multiple images or visual elements from
different sources combined into one
Images can be saved in various file formats
Default file format is .psd
Photoshop’s native raw format, similar to .tiff
Preserves layers
Typical image formats: .jpg, .gif, .png

Review Selection Tools: used to select a section of an image
A selection is enclosed by a marquee
Fixed-area tools Used to select rectangular or elliptical objects
Rectangular/elliptical marquee tool
Single row/column marquee tool
Freeform tools Used to select objects with irregular shapes
Lasso tool
Polygonal lasso tool
Magnetic lasso tool

Review Selections can be made via colors instead of shapes
Color Range command (Select Menu) Identify common colors to use for selection Exclude colors if necessary
Magic Wand tool Tolerance: to specify whether similar pixels are included Anti-aliased checkbox: to soften appearance of
selection Contiguous checkbox: to select pixels that are next to
one another
Sample All Layers checkbox: select pixels from all layers

Review Vignette Effect: uses feathering to fade from a
marquee, blurring surrounding area
1. Create marquee (marquee or lasso tool)
2. Modify feather setting (increase blur)
3. Layer Add Layer Mask Reveal

Paints using a defined sample 1. Hold down Alt/Option key & click to define stamp
2. Click to apply stamp
Healing Brush & Spot Healing Brush tools Healing Brush: same as above, but blends results Spot Healing Brush: does not required defined sample More intelligent than Clone Stamp
Burn & Dodge tools Burn: lightens selected area Doge: darkens selected area
Eyedropper & Brush combo technique Eyedropper: changes Foreground color to selected spot Use shortcut keys: “I” and “B” to switch back/forth

Pick from presets
Customize gradients
Add color/opacity stops

Review Hue: color transmitted/reflected
Identified by the color name (i.e. blue)
Saturation: chroma, strength of the color
Represents the amount of gray in proportion to
the hue
Brightness: lightness/darkness of the color
Contrast: difference in luminance & color

1. Right-click layer Blending Options Check style Set options
If grayed out, convert Background to normal layer first:

1. Filter Filter Gallery Choose & Preview
2. -or- Filter Choose category Choose filter

4. OK to save, or Restore All to revert to original
