Working with Photoshop Tools

Photoshop has an abundance of tools thatgive a Photoshop designer tremendous con- -trol over any creative designing problems thatmay crop up. For example, the Photoshoptool box contains 11selection tools (you cannever have enough selection tools), 13 paint-ing or shape tools, 4 type tools, and 14toolsdedicated to restoring and retouching images.Add to that collection, slicing, sampling, andviewing tools and you have almost 70 tools. When you work on a document, it's importantto know what tools are available, and howthey can help in achieving your design goals.Photoshop likes to save space, so it consoli-dates similar tools under one button. Toaccess multiple tools, click and hold on anytoolbox button that contains a small black tri-angle, located in the lower right corner of thetool button. Take a moment to explore thePhotoshop tool box and get to know the tools.

The Photoshop toolbox contains the toolsneeded to work through any Photoshop job,but it's not necessary to click on a tool toaccess it. Simply using a letter of the alphabetcan access all of Photoshop's tools. For exam-ple, pressing the V key switches to the Movetool, and pressing the W key switches to theMagic Wand tool. In addition, if a button hasmore than one tool available, such as theGradient and Paint Bucket buttons, pressingthe Shift key along with the tool's shortcutlets you cycle through the tool's otheroptions. You can quickly move between toolsusing Spring-loaded keys. Rather than goback to the tool box when you want to switchtools, just hold down the shortcut letter keyfor the new tool, use the tool, and then let goof the shortcut key and you'll be back usingthe first tool.

You can refer to Adobe Photoshop CCKeyboard Shortcuts (available for down loadon the web at www.perspection.com) formore information on all the letter assign-ments for the various tools. It helps to useboth hands. Use one hand for your mouse ordrawing tablet, and the other on the keyboardto make quick changes of tools and options.

Using the Options BarThe Options bar displays the options for thecurrently selected tool. If you are workingwith the Shape Marquee tools, your optionsinclude Feather, Style, Width, and Height. When working with the Brush tools, available

tool options include Size, Mode, Opacity, andTolerance. The important thing to rememberis that the Options bar is customized basedon the tool you have selected.

To quickly set options on the Options barand panels, you can use scrubby sliders. When you point to a text label of a numericsetting (cursor changes to a finger with adouble arrow), and then drag left or right, thesetting adjusts down or up. If you press Alt(Win) or Option (Mac) while scrubbing, val-ues change more slowly; if you press Shift, values change more quickly. If an optiondoesn't have a text label, press Ctrl (Win) or~ (Mac) while you drag over the setting.

• Width and Height. Select fromvarious measurements, such aspoints, centimeters, or inches.

• Resolution. Select a resolution, such as 72 ppi (pixels/inch) foronline and 300 ppi for print.

• Color Mode. Select a colormode, such as RGB for colorand Grayscale for black/white.

• Background Contents. Select abackground color or atransparent background .

• Click OK.

Did You Know?Youcan create a custom preset docu-ment. If you use the same new docu-ment size over and over again, you cansave the settings as a preset. In theNew dialog box, change the variousoptions to customize your new docu-ment, and then click Save Preset. Typea name, select additional options, andthen click OK. To use the preset, clickthe Preset list arrow, and then select it.

12 Chapter 1

Creating a new Photoshop document requires more thought than creat-ing a new word processing document. For example, there are resolu-tion and color mode considerations to keep in mind. You can create asmany new documents as you need for your current project. However, since operrinq more than one document takes more processing power,it's probably best to work on only one new document at a time. Once anew document is created, you have access to all of Photoshop's designand manipulation tools to create anything you can imagine.

For Your Information

Knowing Your Purpose and AudienceBefore you create an image, you need to identify the purpose of theimage and the needs of your audience. The key here is communicat-ing with your audience or client and peers about the design purposeand plans before you get started, so you don't have to re-do theimage again later. The main uses for images are online, print, mobile, and video. During the planning process, you need to determine thesize, resolution, color mode, background, color profile, and pixelaspect ratio you need for the type of image you want. For online, youneed 72 ppi for resolution, RGB for color mode, Working RGB forcolor profile, and Square Pixels for pixel aspect ratio. For print, youneed 300 ppi for resolution and CMYK for color mode; check withyour commercial printer for other settings. For video and mobile, settings vary, so use the appropriate presets; they are a great placeto start. See page 14, "Creating New Documents Using Presets," forspecific instructions.

Page 7: Adobe photoshop cc on demand 2

Selecting Color Modes and Resolution

Selecting a Color ModeA color mode, also known as color space, determines how Photoshop displays andprints an image. You choose a different colormode (based on models used in publishing)for different tasks. You can choose a colormode when you create a new document orchange a color mode for an existing docu-ment. The common color modes include:

Grayscale. Best for printing black-and-whiteand duotone images. This mode uses onechannel and has a maximum of 256 shades ofgray.

RGB (Red, Green, and Blue). Best for onlineand multimedia color images. Red, green, andblue are also the primary colors on a monitor.

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black).Best for commercial printing of color images.

LAB (Luminosity, A and B channels). Best forperforming image correction. This mode putsall grayscale information on the L channel andsplits the colors to the A and B channels.

For more information on color, see Chapter 8,"Understanding Colors and Channels."

Selecting Image ResolutionPhotoshop works primarily with raster docu-ments. Raster documents are images com-posed of pixels.A pixel is a unit ofinformation that holds the color and detailinformation of the image. Think of aPhotoshop document as a brick wall, with theindividual bricks in the wall representing theindividual pixels in the image. Documentsopened in Photoshop have a specific resolu-tion. The resolution of the image, along withits width and height, represents how manypixels the image contains. Since pixels (thebricks in the wall) represent information, the

more pixels a document contains, the moreinformation Photoshop has to manipulate orenhance the image.

A typical 17-inch monitor displays pixels ata resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels per inch. Youcan figure out how many pixels are presenton a 17-inch monitor by multiplying 1,024 x768, which equals 786,432 pixels on thescreen. The resolution is equal to how manypixels fit into each monitor inch, otherwiseknown as ppi (pixels per inch). A typical moni-tor displays pixels at 72 pixels per inch.

To determine the size of an image ininches, we divide the pixels by the ppi. Forexample, an image 1,024 pixels wide at 72 ppiwould be 14.2 inches wide (1,024172 = 14.2).To determine the pixels present in an image, you multiple the size by the ppi. For example,a 3 inch image at 72 ppi would have a total of216 pixels (3 x 72 = 216). As the image resolu-tion drops, so does the output quality of theimage. Pixelization occurs when the resolu-tion is so low that the edges of the pixelbegin to appear. The higher the resolution(more plxels), the sharper your image will be.However, the higher the resolution, the largerthe file size will become. To optimize yourimage file size, you need to use the correctresolution for the specific task. Use 72 ppi forweb pages, CD/DVDs, and multimedia; use150 ppi for inkjet printers, 200 ppi for photoprinters, and 300 ppi for commercial printing.

When working with images, it's always agood idea to start with a larger image size. You can always reduce the size of the image(subtract pixels) without losing any quality. Ifyou need to enlarge an image, you run therisk of losing image quality. When you enlargean image, the number of pixels doesn'tincrease as the image does, so the pixelsbecome larger, which results in a rougher, ormore pixelated, image.

14 Chapter 1

When you create documents for specific purposes, such as, web, film, video, or for use on a mobile device, you know the importance of creat-ing documents that will perfectly match the output requirements of theintended file destination. The preset file sizes available in the Presetmenu let·you create images at a size and pixel aspect ratio that com-pensate for scaling when you incorporate them into various outputmodes. When you work with the Preset menu, the guesswork involvedin creating compatible photo, web, mobile device, film and video docu-ments in Photoshop is a thing of the past.
