RESOLUTION
LOS ANGELES MUSEUM OF THE HOLOCAUST
50th Anniversary
Whereas, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust is the oldest Holocaust museum in the United States; and
Whereas, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust dedicates itself as a primary source institution, one that commemorates those who perished and those who survived by housing the precious artifacts that miracu lously weathered the Holocaust era; and
Whereas, with a small and dedicated staff, the Museum fulfills its mission to commemorate and ed ucate ; and
Whereas, in 1961 at Hollywood High School, a group of Survivors taking English as a Second Language classes found one another and shared their experiences. They discovered that each of them had a photograph, concentration cam p uniform, or other precious primary source object from the Holoca ust era; and
Whereas, this group of survivors decided that these artifacts needed a permanent home where they could be displayed safe ly and in perpetuity. They also wanted a place to memorialize their dead and help to educate the world so that no one would ever forget; and
WH EREAS, Today, some of these founding Survivors remain active on the Los Angeles Museum Board of Directors; and
Whereas, on October 14, 2010 the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust opened the doors to its new building in Pan Pacific Park; and
Whereas, Mayor Antonio Villara igosa , City Counci l President Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Tom LaBonge opened the new museum through a Ceremony, with Museum representatives and Holocaust Survivors; and
Whereas, the museum is always free because the founding Survivors insist ed that no vi sitors ever be turned away from lea rning about t he Holoca ust for lack of an entry fee:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this Resolution the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby The Los Ange les Museum of the Holocaust on the occasion of their soth Anniversa ry. For encourag ing and providing ed ucation of the Holocaust at no cost to all who enter your doors.

DION NEUTRA DAY In LOS ANGELES
Whereas, October 8, 2011 marks the 85th birthday of Dion Neutra, and the continuation of his efforts to save and preserve the works of his firm; and
Whereas, Dion Neutra, son and partner of the late Richard Neutra, has continued the practice now for 41 years since his father's passing, having participated in projects in 20 states, and on four continents, now also celebrates the firm's 85th Anniversary; and
Whereas, Dion Neutra has recently concluded the nation's first internet outreach to save a National Icon, the Kronish Residence in Beverly Hills, only the most recent of many such efforts; and
Whereas, Dion Neutra is now the longest living resident of Silver lake, the community where the practice was founded; and
Whereas, Dion has tirelessly advocated for good planning solutions in and around his native Silver Lake:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOlVED, by the adoption of this resolution, the City Counci l of the City of Los Angeles does hereby proclaim October 8, 2011 as 'Dion Neutra Day', recognizing his contributions to the architectural world and wish him many happy returns and continued success in his ventures.

JASON MRAZ
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ is an icon among the music industry as a Grammy® awardwinning artist, and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has been an instrumental advocate on behalf of young people affected by spinal cord injury through his personal and professional support of Life Rolls On (LRO ), a subsidiary of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has helped young people with spinal cord injury push the bounds of possibility through his selfless volunteerism at They Will Surf Again; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has raised awareness about spinal cord injury to millions of people by promoting this cause to his fans through social media, attending Life Rolls On events, and appearing on Jesse Billauer and Life Rolls On film and television projects such as "Jesse's Story" and "Everyday Health"; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has raised thousands of dollars for spinal cord injury awareness and LRO's programs by performing at Night by the Ocean and creating "Cord Progression: A Night of Music to Support Jesse Billauer's Motivational Speaking Tour and Life Rolls On Foundation"; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ is a world-renowned humanitarian supporting countless charities, including Free the Slaves, True Colors Fund, VH I Save the Music, SPARC, Free the Children, Surfrider, Natural Resources Defense Council, and MusiCares, among others; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has recently created the Jason Mraz Foundation where he will continue to create brighter tomorrows for the children and communities of today; and
WHEREAS, JASON MRAZ has been a dear friend and inspiration to Life Rolls On founder Jesse Billauer:
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, by adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles, does hereby commend JASON MRAZ for his Leadership and commitment to improving the quality of Life for young people with spinal cord injury, and salutes his efforts as the 20 I I Reeve Foundation Leadership Award Honoree at the 8th

WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN has been an instrumental advocate on behalf of young people affected by spinal cord injury through his personal and steadfast support of Life RoLLs On (LRO ), a subsidiary of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation; and

WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN has raised awareness about spinal cord injury to miLLions of people by introducing this cause to his fans through his participation in Life RoLLs On events and Lending his celebrity to several LRO activities; and
WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN has helped raise thousands of doLLars for Life RoLLs On Foundation through his integral and hands-on support of the organization's signature gala, Night by the Ocean; and ·
WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN has been instrumental in the making of "Floating: The Nathan Gocke Story," where he helped Nathan, a quadriplegic, surf for the first time since his inju ry; and
WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN is a compassionate humanitarian whose efforts have also benefited Surfers Healing, The Art of Elysium, and Make-A-Wish Foundation, among others; and
WHEREAS, SCOTT CAAN has generously used his rare days off to quietly take para lyzed surfers into the ocean to ride waves, sacrificing his own time to surf for their enjoyment:
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, by adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles, does hereby commend SCOTT CAAN for his Leadership and commitment to improving the quality of Life for young people with spinal cord injury, and salutes his efforts as the 20 I I Champion of Hope Honoree at the 8th Annual Night by the Ocean Gala.

WALKTOBER
WHEREAS, By issuing a Proclamation of Walktober, the leadership in the City of Los Angeles is working to support efforts to inspire city agencies, staff, families and community members to make walking, instead of driving, a priority in and encourage widespread participation in International Walk to School Day October 5, 2011 throughout the entire city, as well as during the entire month; and
WHEREAS, 11 °/o of all the trips made in southern California are done via walking; and
WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles is demonstrating its commitment to improve walking and bicycling conditions around the schools in the City of Los Angeles when in April 2011, $1.2Million was allocated to create a citywide Safe Routes to School strategic plan; and
WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles will celebrate it's 3rd CicLAvia on October 9, 2011, an exciting event of 7.5 miles of car-free city streets for all Angelenos, promoting public health, walking, bicycling, open space, economic development and community building; and
WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems among children, where being able to walk or bicycle to school offers an opportunity to build activity into daily routine; and
WHEREAS, driving students to school by private vehicle contributes to traffic congestion (as much as up to 14°/o of all morning congestion) and air pollution; and
WHEREAS, walking is an environmentally safe transportation alternative and one of the easiest and least expensive ways to stay active; and
WHEREAS, an important role for parents, caregivers and communities is to teach children about pedestrian safety, about the health and environmental risks re lated to physical inactivity, air pollution, and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that students face on their trip to school each day; and
WHEREAS, elected officials, parents, educators, community members and other leaders can support Safe Routes to School programs which enable students and their family members to safely walk and bicycle in our communities:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this Resolution the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby proclaim the month of October 2011, as "WALKTOBER" International Walk-to-School Month and encourages everyone to consider the safety and health of children this month and throughout the year.

Rick Wall
Whereas, Rick Wall joined the Los Angeles Police Department on May, 26, 1981; and upon graduation from the Police Academy, was assigned as a Police Officer to West Los Angeles Area, Communications Division, Rampart Division, Pacific Division, The Olympic Crime Task Force during the 1984 Olympic Games, and Training Division, where he was a member of the team that developed the Department's Human Relations Program and co-authored the Human Relations Manual; and
Whereas, after recovering from a serious injury that resulted in permanent hearing loss in one ear and permanent severe nerve damage to his hand, Rick was promoted to the rank of Detective and assigned to the Inspection and Control Section, Southwest Detectives, and Narcotics Group; and
Whereas, Rick was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to Rampart Patrol, Pacific Patrol, the Pacific Beach Detail, Narcotics Division, Employee Relations Group, and Internal Affairs Group; and
Whereas, Rick was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to Pacific Patrol Division, where he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and attended the National Police Staff College in the United Kingdom where he completed the International Command Course; and
Whereas, upon returning the Los Angeles, Rick was assigned as the Department's Mental Illness Project Coordinator, responsible for developing "Best Practices" for handling calls for service for law enforcement responses to persons with mental illnesses; and
Whereas, in 2008, Rick was promoted to the rank of Captain and served as the Commanding Officer at Central Patrol Division, Harbor Patrol Division, and Real-time Analysis and Critical Response Division, while completing his Master's Degree in History, and retiring on July 16, 2011; and
Whereas, it should be noted that during his 30 year career, Captain Wall was awarded the Police Meritorious Service Medal, the Police Medal (twice), the Police Star, the Police Meritorious Unit Citation (three times), and the Human Relations Medal, and upon his retirement became the Director of Corporate Security for CBS Corporation:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council along with the Mayor, City Attorney and City Controller do hereby commend and congratulate Captain Rick Wall for upholding the finest and highest traditions and standar os Angeles Police Department; extends best wishes for continued success and happiness u the occasio of his retirement.
