While we usually associate herpes simplex virus with cold sores, herpes sim-plex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can also affect the eyes. Usually, only one eye is

affected, and the infection involves the cornea (the transparent dome at the front of the eye). How does this happen? It may help to know that the name “herpes” comes from the Greek word meaning “to creep.” In the majority of cases, expos-ure to herpes occurs during childhood. Then, after remaining dormant for many years, it may be reactivated and spread down the nerves to the face and/or eye due to reasons not completely understood. In order to treat superfi cial corneal infections, antiviral drops and antiviral ointments may be all that are needed.

P.S. Deeper, more severe corneal infections involving HSV-1 will likely require steroid drops to reduce infl ammation and prevent corneal scarring.

While vitamin D plays an important role in maintain-ing bone health, new research indicates that the “sunshine vitamin” also boosts seniors’ muscle strength. According to a study of 2,778 generally

healthy people with an average age of 75, two-thirds had insuf cient levels of vitamin D and 90% consumed less than the recommended amount of the vitamin. Researchers also found that those with the highest levels of the vitamin scored best on physical function tests. In addi-tion, while physical function declined overall during the four years of the study, those with the highest vitamin D levels saw their physical functioning remain signi cantly higher. Many now recommend that people over 70 get 1,000 International Units of vitamin D daily.
