Our Karate Programfollows a systemized belt ranking for all participants. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before rst-degree black belt (shodan). A new studentis assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). One must fulll certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test

    environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels.     M E E T O U R K A R A T E I N S T R U C T O R S

    Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trainedin Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articlesin the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs.

    Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981 and is a third degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. His karate experience extendsto Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. Hiskarate teaching experience includes The University of Chicago, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the United StatesMarine Corps in Tokyo. He has been with Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

    P e e W e e K a r a t eStudents learn how to control their energy levels and concentration through study of fundamental Karate principles. Participants willlearn how to follow instructions and exercise self control in a fun and exciting environment.

    T A E K W O N D OTaekwondo, one of the newest Olympic sports, is a 2000-year-old martial art, offering a variety of benets for people of all ages andphysical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self-esteem, achieve lifelong physical tness and learnself-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G.Master Ki Hong Kim* (Eighth Dan World Taekwondo Federation.) A $45uniform fee is required at the rst class. Belt testing is offered through The KH Kim Taekwondo at an additional fee and is held twice a

    year. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gears.

    Greg Schultz received his BFA from Wash-ington University in St. Louis in 1990. He

    has studied at the graduate level at SAIC.Greg has been studying ceramics at Lill-street Art Center since 2002 and has alsobeen a studio member there since 2009.Currently, he sells his work online and athis own studio, Schultz Studio Arts.

    Gabriella Verbovszky holds a BFA fromthe Cleveland Institute of Art and MFAfrom the New York State College of Ce-ramics at Alfred University. Gabriella iscurrently studying nutrition at the Insti-tute of Integrative Nutrition (NYC). She

    is a KUSHI Institute Certied Macrobi-otic Instructor who has focused attentionon the dietary needs of both woman andchildren after her mother became ill. Priorto the change in diet, Gabriella was a som-melier and received her training in Europeacquiring the highest form of certicationincluding WSET-Wine and Spirit Educa-tions Advisor of Wine Certicate.

    D O G O B E D I E N C EPuppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment forsocialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as toeach other. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce theincidence of both human-directed aggression and dog-dog aggression,as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Additionaltopics will be discussed such as addressing the common puppy issuesof house training, mouthing, leadership and preventing behaviorproblems. Puppies will also learn sit and begin recall training (coming

    when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages 24 monthsold. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinationsprior to attending. If your dog has not yet received the second round,please plan to attend class without your pGruppy until the secondround of vaccination has been administered.

    Obedience 101teaches the basics of obedience: sit, down, stand,recall (coming when called), stay, and heeleverything yourcompanion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and handsignals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positivereinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewardsor a small toy with you to class.

    Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101.Additional levels of difculty and distractions will be added. Dogsof any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basicobedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called), stay,and heel.

    Canine Good Citizen (CGC) class covers the 10 aspects of theAKC CGC test, the only AKC certicate available to all dogspure-and mix-breed. The CGC program is designed to encourage dogowners to train their dogs to be Canine Good Citizens and includesthe following: accepting a friendly stranger; walking on a loose lead;sitting politely for petting; allowing basic grooming procedures;walking through a crowd; sitting and lying down on commandand staying in place; coming when called; reacting appropriately to

    another dog; reacting appropriately to distractions; calmly enduringsupervised separation from the owner. The CGC test is administeredon the last night of class. Children training dogs must be at least 12years old. Dogs must wear a at buckle collar for the test, no trainingcollars, head halters or body harnesses are permitted during the test.

    Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog andthe handler. Rally is a sport in which ALL dogs are encouragedto participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn thefundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills totake this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tailare as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowedto, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the

    competition with verbal praise, petting, and even food rewards!Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work andeach others company.

    Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter,BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons

    for dog obedience training and behavior problems. She has beenrecognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluatorby the American Kennel Club and a Certied Pet Dog Trainer(CPDT-KA) by the Certication Council for Pet Dog Trainers.

    Ashlee and her staff use positive reinforcement training methodsto improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing

    M e m b e r s h i p I n f o r m a t i o nEarly registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week

    prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done

    Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a

    spot in a class.

    Who is eligible for benets? All family members in your household are

    eligible for membership benets. When registering for membership, just list

    your family members, and they will be included for the program registra-

    tion benets automatically when registering for classes.

    Membership renewal: Members receive a notice about one month prior

    to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.

    Refunds for memberships will not be available.

    R e l i g i o u s H o l i d a y sWinnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid schedulingprograms or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offeredthe option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as amake-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed. Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision

    of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the establishedprogram times.

    Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our

    Executive Director. Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by

    our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations. Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no

    accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs oractivities on Community House property. It is advisable to review yourown personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family

    have proper and sufcient insurance coverage.

    Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participanparents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House contstrives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants safety. Please recognize that Winnetka Community Housnot carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive. Therefore, each person registering himself\herself or a family member

    recreation program/activity should review his/her own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make Winnetka Community House automresponsible for payment of medical expenses. Due to the difficulty and high cost of obtaining liability insurance, the agency providing liability coverage for Winnetka Community House requires the executhe following Waiver and Release. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
