WELCOMEI’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to South Devon College, and thank you for considering us as the people to help you achieve your goals. Everything we do is centred on giving you the best possible experience as a student, inside and outside of the classroom. Our passion for learning never stops and is why the delivery of programmes at all levels is consistently recognised as being excellent.
Developing skills has never been so important in keeping us in employment, progressing our careers, achieving our ambitions and supporting the recovery of our local economy. In November 2020, the Government launched its Lifetime Skills Guarantee meaning that from April 2021, adults without a full Level 3 (A Level equivalent qualification) can take a Government funded college course to help get one. This provides a fantastic opportunity to get back into education, but there are plenty of other options too, including other courses which are already fully or partly funded, subject to your personal circumstances.
At South Devon College, we offer a broad mix of study programmes and qualifications. From recreational courses that give you the opportunity to try something new and meet new people, right through to professional qualifications and degree programmes at our highly regarded University Centre (UCSD). Our courses are designed with employability, personal development, and enrichment in mind. There’s a focus on the sectors where we know there’s a shortfall of skilled workers or where opportunities lie locally, such as in health and care, education, digital or marine programmes (amongst a variety of other exciting sectors), with many courses delivered at our new state-of-the-art Hi Tech & Digital Centre.
I speak from experience when I say that our tutors and lecturers find no greater satisfaction than seeing students go on to achieve great things year after year. But being at South Devon College isn’t just about gaining qualifications. It’s also about the lively and friendly community here. As a result of our values, you can be confident that you’ll feel included and receive the support you need to progress as part of this aspirational community.
We hope you find the information in this guide a useful outline of the courses on offer here at the College. Please remember our Helpzone team are here to guide you in selecting the right course for your needs, and of course you’ll find more information on the courses listed here on our website. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to study in person or online or a blend of both.
Thank you for considering us as the people to support you with such an important decision in your life. I look forward to welcoming you to South Devon College very soon.

OUR STUDENTS
“I’ve studied Level 2 Gym Instructor, Level 3 Personal Trainer, Indoor Cycling Instructor, Water Based Fitness Instructor, Circuit Instructor, and First Aid here at the College.
“I spoke to a friend about what I wanted to do after the lease of my business was up. She said I have such a love of fitness that maybe I should enquire about the courses at South Devon College, and here I am.
“From the point of first contact via email, to the face-to-face meeting with Simon Holden and Gary Stephens, the whole experience has been a pleasure. The fitness team are a great support and the quality of teaching I received from Simon was outstanding, motivational, and inspirational. Classes are fun and you always feel involved and that your opinions are heard and taken into account. I made great friends along the way and there was never a day that I felt I didn’t want to be here.
“I’ve just signed up to further my knowledge and level up in the education department by doing my degree in Sports Coaching and Fitness.
“Since becoming qualified, I’ve worked in a number of gyms and leisure centres around Devon. I regularly teach spinning as I’ve found a real passion for it and it’s incredibly rewarding.
“If you want my advice: do it! Just take that step. It’s something you most definitely won’t regret. I’m so glad I made that initial contact. My life is fuller and I’m surrounded by the best support. The tutors here are great and nothing is too much trouble.
“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”: Martin Luther King Jr.”

APPRENTICESHIPS
Apprenticeships combine paid employment, valuable work skills, and practical training. There are higher levels too, so now you can go even further with an apprenticeship.
How does it work?Apprenticeships are available in almost every industry and they usually last two years. You’ll be employed in your workplace and attend college one day a week. You’ll also have a dedicated partnership coordinator who will help you gain the relevant skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to complete your apprenticeship.
What are the benefits? Not only will you be paid a wage during your training, but you’ll also develop real working experience which is highly valued by employers. Apprenticeships help you get your foot in the door and often lead to a full-time job once completed. You’ll also gain transferable skills that are relevant across various industries, so your progression opportunities are endless.
What if I’m not ready? If you don’t feel quite ready to start an apprenticeship, we offer courses including traineeships that will help you prepare for one. These courses are available in almost every area of study, and help you develop the essential skills you’ll need to succeed on an apprenticeship programme.
How do I get started? Our apprenticeship vacancy page is a great place to start looking for existing opportunities. If there’s nothing there that’s quite right, think about which apprenticeship programme you’d like to study - you can find more information in our course listings or search ‘sdc apprenticeships’ online. Once you’ve applied, we’ll invite you into the College to discuss your suitability and help you in finding the perfect employer for your apprenticeship. Whether you have a job already or not, apprenticeships are a great way to upskill in your current workplace or get into employment while studying.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION DIPLOMAS
Access to Higher Education Diplomas are intensive one year (full-time) or two year (part-time) programmes designed to prepare students who may not have the necessary qualifications (e.g. A Levels) for progression to university. We have a broad range of quality pathways which will help your progression into a variety of different career options. These are listed under the different subject area pages further on in this guide.
How does it work?An Access to HE Diploma consists of three core subjects (which are equivalent to three A Levels) as well as a Study Skills module. The Study Skills Module will support your academic essay writing skills as well as guide you through the UCAS application process. Full-time, part-time, and online study options are available. If you need to complete your GCSEs prior to starting the Access to HE course, we have a range of daytime and evening options available. You’re advised to look at the GCSEs required by the universities of your choice when planning your progression. The entry requirements to allow enrolment onto the Access to HE Diploma are GCSE maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above.
What are the benefits?Access to HE is a fantastic alternative option to A Levels as there are a variety of assessment methods (e.g. essays, reports, presentations, brochures). As it’s based on coursework completion as opposed to linear exams, many of our students continue to work part-time while they study. Feedback from both past students and university staff shows that the study skills we teach, along with the comprehensive core subject content, have helped Access to HE students to be well placed in a university setting. They’re also often positive peer mentors to others, thanks to their organisational skills and academic prowess.
How do I afford the course? You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay for your studies (see page 6 for more details). It’s easy to apply for, doesn’t take your household income into account, and doesn’t involve a credit check. If you complete both your Access course and a Foundation or Level 6 degree course, you won’t need to repay your course fees.
What can I do after the Access to HE Diploma? All of our Access to HE courses are designed to prepare you for Higher Education and studying at university. On completion of the course, you’ll have achieved the academic entry requirements for our foundation degrees and full honours degrees at University Centre South Devon, as well as a wide range of courses at institutions all over the country. Some courses will have additional entry requirements.

What qualifications can I study at University Centre South Devon?
Higher National Certificate (HNC) – Level 4Higher National Certificates (HNC) are vocational qualifications designed to develop practical as well as theoretical skills and knowledge. They focus on equipping you with a practical understanding of your chosen subject and can lead directly to employment in specific industries; they may also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. Upon successful completion of the HNC you can progress onto the related Foundation Degree at University Centre South Devon.
Foundation Degree (FdA and FdSc) – Level 5A Foundation Degree is a degree-level qualification that takes 2 years to complete, and is equivalent to the first 2 years of a traditional Honours Degree. Foundation Degrees focus on relevant, work-based skills within a particular career route or profession. Foundation Degrees are one of the quickest and most direct routes to the high-level vocational skills required in the working world, because employers are involved in the development of the programmes. They ensure you are ready to transition into employment.
Bachelor’s Degrees (BA [Hons] and BSc [Hons]) – Level 6At the end of a Foundation Degree you have the option to ‘top-up’ your qualification with an additional third year of study to convert it into a Full Honours Degree. We offer a range of Bachelor’s top-up courses for you to consider, or you could progress to the University of Plymouth where you are guaranteed an interview for an associated top-up course.

Can I study English and maths at South Devon College?Absolutely! Refreshing or developing your skills in English and maths can have a significant, positive impact that lasts a lifetime. The ability to read and write confidently is essential in a variety of careers, but can also benefit you greatly in your day-to-day life, opening up possibilities you hadn’t previously considered.
Will people on my course be a similar age to me?Don’t worry, we don’t have an upper age limit on our adult courses, and groups tend to be varied. If you’re coming to study on a full time vocational course it’s likely you’ll be learning alongside some of our 16-18 year old students. Studying among students with a varied age range is a great way to diversify your social circle and enrich your learning experience.
What facilities do you have onsite? As a student, you’ll be able to access our fantastic resources including the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) which provides a quiet place for study, and access to IT and support with lots of study resources.
Currently, the LRC will be open with a limited service from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.00pm. We can help you every step of the way giving you the right information and advice so you can choose a course that suits your ability, interests, and long term goals. We know going back into education or employment can be a big step to make and we want to make sure you’re fully supported so it’s a positive experience.
Can I undertake an apprenticeship if I’m over 19?Of course! It’s an assumption that apprenticeships are only for people under 18, however we find that most employers value the experience and dedication of older students. The biggest barrier tends to be the wage however some companies are willing to pay more than the national living wage for the right candidate. With an apprenticeship, you’re also more likely to progress within the company once your apprenticeship has finished.
