News & Notes Fayette County

Fayette County SPOKES students create collages representing their short and long term goals.

Nicholas County Spokes August 2016 Project Bug-out Bag

For the Friday Fun Day activities for August, I elected to work each week on a larger project for the students, to be completed by the end of the month. For this, I

had the class make individual Bug-Out bags, a mini emergency kit. Our kit contained the following items: water, kool-aid pouch, protein bar, glow

sticks, mini sewing kit, mini first aid kit, rain poncho, compass, whistle, flashlight/lighter combo, paracord, signal mirror, fork/spoon/knife combo, emergency mylar blanket, long-burning candle, firestarter brick and handout. The total cost for all the items per student was approximately $11.67, a relatively inexpensive cost when you consider the potential benefits. Students can also add to the kit to further customize it to suit their individual needs, using information from the handout. Of course, we also

threw in a few hands-on activities as well, by creating homemade GAK, more salt body scrub, harvest snack mix, etc.

Webster County

The Webster County Adult Education and SPOKES Class helped the local FRN with the Back to School Splash Bags at the beginning of the month. Over 1200 bags were assembled by the group. Each bag contained pencils, notebooks, binders, erasers, markers, scissors, pens, loose leaf paper,

composition book, highlighter, toothbrush, ruler, post-its, ect. It took the class and FRN volunteers two complete days to finish all the bags from Pre-K to 12th grade. Although it was hard work, the class had a good time and felt a sense of accomplishment.

Collaboration with 14 high schools for scheduling leadership team meetings.

RESA 1 high schools – administration and leadership team

Communication and collaboration with all 14 high schools has resulted in a plan for ensuring attendance at each school’s leadership team meeting at least one time per month.

Collaboration with other RESA RS3s

Regional School Support Specialists from the other seven RESAs in WV

I hosted a meeting of all RS3s during which we all shared information, comments, and concerns regarding the Graduation 20/20 program. As a result of this meeting, we are requesting more training on Zoom and Zoom for educators, as well as other specific trainings that will enable us to better serve our schools.

Leadership Team meetings with four high schools; brief visits with the principal at other schools

Graduation 20/20 school leadership teams

I attended the leadership team meeting for four of our fourteen high schools in RESA 1. The meeting was to provide an overview of the expectations for the school this year with Graduation 20/20. Also in each school, we looked at some of the school data via WVZoom. Since all of the data for 2015-16 is not yet posted to the site, we will revisit the data site in October to complete the Core Data Tool for each school. I was able to have a brief impromptu meeting with two principals when delivering books to the schools for their Professional Learning Communities. In each school I had time to briefly review some of the highlights for Graduation 20/20 for the current school year – including, but not limited to –revising the school action plan, looking at measurable results with the action plan, and placing a graduation coach in the schools.

Presentation to the West Virginia Board of Education

WVBE and WVDE personnel attending the meeting

With the guidance and support of the Office of Special Education at WVDE, a Graduation 20/20 team consisting of the executive director, special education director, coordinator of community schools, RS3, and three graduation coaches gave a presentation to the WVBE. We gave an overview of Graduation 20/20 and each coach told about the work they do with students. The presentation was well received.

A meeting with Solution Tree representative to plan for more professional learning on classroom formative assessment

Students and teacher in all 14 high schools were the ultimate population that will be served.

A meeting with Lisa Williams from Solution Tree resulted in scheduling two days (at separate times) for Eric Twadell to come back for more on professional learning communities and formative assessment practices.

Transition Conference DRS personnel and RS3s for Graduation 20/20

I attended a Transition Conference at Glade Springs. The topics included Creating Creative and Resilient Young Leaders; Transitioning from School to Work; Understanding Post High School Education and Training; and Best Practices for Transitioning. It was a very informative conference

Meeting of Graduation 20/20 RS3s All RESA RS3s for Graduation

Our monthly meeting for RS3s held at RESA 3 was very informative. We heard from two coordinators with the WVDE who provided us with a lot of good information, links, apps, etc. for using technology with students with disabilities. I am very excited to share this information with my schools.

COMMENTS

Kevin Anglin McDowell County Cloned the HDD’s of several mobile labs for MVHS and WES. I have troubleshot and repaired network issues at RVHS and KES. I have updated and upgraded various software and installed testing software for the year 2016-2017.

Jeremy Ball Summers County I responded to work orders that include imaging of computers; access controls settings, camera issues, access control issues and wireless issues. At Summers Middle Schools, I responded to work orders that include computer imaging, repair and access controls settings. Hinton Area Elementary School, I responded to work orders that include computer imaging and access controls. At Jumping Branch Elementary, I responded to work orders that include access controls imaging of computers. At Talcott Elementary School, I responded to work orders that include computer imaging and access controls settings. At Summers County Board Office, I have worked on day to day issues for the users; access control issues, imaging computers and sorting thru equipment. The big project is imaging the 1 to 1 computer for SCHS students.

Ryan Blankenship McDowell County I started the month out imaging machines updating them and getting ready for the new school year and testing. Last week I spent getting ready for school to start plugging up

classrooms that needed to be plugged up trying to figure out what people needed before school started.

Vince Estepp McDowell County Work orders included updating/imaging laptop carts for the new school year in all schools. Coordinate printer warranty fulfillment. Assembly of tables for new high school lab. Install new lab for high school. Debug no connectivity on laptops. Set up labs where they were disassembled for the summer throughout all schools. Set up new networked Xerox copier/scanner/printers for all schools. Installed new drops for BOE. Install new wireless drops in schools. Assemble new laptop cart. Install new printers. Set up new iPads. Set up replacement s PC’s for classes.

Kenneth Lester Monroe County We have prepared and imaged two new Mobile Classrooms, one at PMS and the other at MVS. Infrastructure changes at all schools have been tested and vetted for issues. MVS now has controller based wifi access points in all classrooms. All other locations have been updated to Extreme Networks Wireless in all classrooms. New servers have been setup for LanSchool and CloudPrint. Much of the time has been dedicated to ChomeBook distribution and management. The next month will be dedicated to LanSchool support, getting staff devices reconnected to our new wireless networks, and general support of the One to One initiative.

Walter Newcomb McDowell County In the last several weeks I have completed mobile lab upgrades at several of our facilities, as well as the beginning phase of a WiFi upgrade project for our Central Office. My team and I are diligently working on several ,“Last Second”, projects that we were informed of. I’m happy to report that these projects are being completed with

little to no impact on our Student and Staff.

Lucy Pack Mercer County I was at PVMS helping break down the three labs to install new workstations, and I helped with setting up the teacher laptops that had been re-imaged over the summer. I pulled all of the old workstations out of the classrooms at PVHS and replaced them with the terminals we pulled out of the PVMS labs I also re-imaged all the better workstations (HP6000, 6200, and 6300) in the school added memory and placed a desktop in each room for the teachers to use. Worked on my work orders in the Oz system, for BHS, MHS, MES, PSHS PVHS and the Vo Tech.

Nathanial Perry Raleigh County Employment began on August 18th. I have completed my on boarding process and am re-acclimating myself within Raleigh County. I anticipate spending the remainder of August learning about my new schools, meeting the staff and students and assisting the RCS Technology department wherever possible.

Joshua Prudich Mercer County I have replaced a few labs and imaged those labs. Took those labs machines and put them in to the classrooms. I have replaced a projector and a few bulbs. I have also clean of viruses and malware. I have replaced a printer and given a few teachers updated laptops. I have installed a printer to classroom machines. I have corrected issues with calibration and pens not working on a few smartboards. I have also shown teachers how to use the new viewsonic televisions

Justin Prudich Mercer County I have been busy with the start of school. We have been given a new work schedule were we will be visiting schools on a specific day. I have been getting printers installed, smartboards and interactive tvs working, and making sure everyone

can log in. This is in addition to my everyday routine of maintenance and repair of the computers and network.

Aaron Reed Mercer County The System Center server has had some setbacks. Joel had showed me how to get the System Center boot image to recognize the USB network adapter used for imaging the ASUS T100 Transformer books right before my summer vacation, but the rest of the team was unable to develop a Windows 10 image while I was gone, so the previous server was reconnected and the Transformer books were sent out with the older Windows 8.1 image that Brad had created. Upon returning from vacation, my focus has been on finishing the image for the homebound student laptops. I was able to load Windows 10 x64 Education. I secured the installation with software restriction policies, allowing only Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and the browsers’ standard plugins to run. I attempted to create the image through System Center, but sysprep altered the local account security identifiers which rendered the security settings useless. I repaired the reference computer and then created an image using Microsoft System Image Recovery, then one at a time recovered the image onto the remaining laptops. We have deployed 20 of these laptops to home bound students. Before the next batch goes out, I will refine the image further and attempt to make the image compatible with a more efficient distribution method. Work on converting Pikeview High to the Mercer domain is mostly completed. I still have to copy over data from the previous servers to the new server. Terminals have been installed in classrooms, and I’ve been able to rename over half of them and enter them into the

Teradici management database. We have been considering a change in student and teacher account policies, and that is the next project I will undertake. Brent and I are going to replace the Student WVEIS ID accounts and the teacher T1xx accounts with one student account and one teacher account. Users will then save their work to their OneDrive account. Instead of using the previous “CL” I will create a new account based on each schools’ initials. This will give each school two accounts to manage, and allow for different schools to have different configurations (login scripts, group policies, etc.) with their public accounts.

Aiden Vrenna Mercer County I've moved new machines into four labs at PVMS and configured those, and moved the middle school's VM terminals to PVHS. I've moved new desktops into PVHS to update an aging lab. I've redeployed teacher laptops at PVMS after upgrading RAM and re-imaging. Worked with issues related to previously created imaged. I've received school assignments. As of today I've been able to assess and introduce myself to each site. I've had at least some experience with each, so the familiarity is welcome. Several machines at BMS do not have any of our standard local admin accounts enabled, so I'll return with a reset tool. But other than the exciting action at PVMS, none of my sites is in especially bad shape. Installation of printers, wifi setup, and a few SMART projector replacements.

John Watson RESA 1 August has been busy with the start of classes in all our counties. Troubleshooting Distance Learning, finding solutions to bandwidth problems, imaging, and general support issues have rounded out my month.

Joel Weiss Mercer County I have been working on security badge changes for the county. I

assisted with getting the labs at Pikeview Middle School changed from virtual to desktop machines. I ran two drops at Pikeview High School. I have been working at my new elementary assignments to clean up classroom desktops and get teacher laptops up and running for the new year. I assisted with a new kiosk program to log attendees to the start of the year employee training sessions.
