The Dangers of Censorship: BannedBooks Week Wrap-Up—Oct. 2, 2 p.m. Libraries stand against censorship and promote the right toread. But some books are hard to defend. When a book usesracist language, demeans people with disabilities or promotessocial ideas that no longer suit the times, it’s easy to see whysomeone would want that book taken off the shelf. But it’smore important to learn how to think critically about thesebooks and talk about the ways society has changed insteadof trying to remove them. This interactive discussion will wrap

up a week of focusing on books that have been challenged. Participants will be invitedto think more deeply about difficult books and the value they still have for readers.

Ray Miller: The Journey of a Closeted PastorOctober 12, 2 p.m. Ray Miller lived with the possibility of disaster for 79 years. If he hadbeen publicly outed as a gay man, his ordination in the UnitedMethodist Church would have been revoked, his marriage endedand his family devastated. Despite all that, his story has hope andhumor. Join this local author to hear about his journey as a Christiangay man before gay rights were recognized or protected.

A Musical Journey to Japan October 14, 2 p.m. Classically trained musician Yoko Hiraoka will perform onthe koto (Japanese 13-stringed zither) and sing beautifulmelodies of Japan while sharing poems, images and storieswith each song in this introduction to Japanese culture andhistory.

Native Americans of Colorado with Active MindsOctober 18, 2 p.m. Active Minds will recount stories of the original inhabitants of Colorado. Learnabout the civilizations of the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Pueblo tribes as we seek tounderstand Colorado’s Native American history and legacy.

Plexiglass Layer Cake Craft ProgramOctober 23, 2–3:30 p.m.*Bring new depth to a special image with layers of plexiglass and lots of creativity.Participants will use multiple copies of an image and several sheets of plexiglass tocreate interesting new perspectives, add collaged details and transform a two-dimensional picture into 3D art.
