Adult Summer Reading 2009 - There's Still Time to Sign Up! Last summer we tried two levels of reading; it was a success, so we are going to do it again this year. For those patrons who are unable to read ten books, we will be offering a second level prize for reading five books. Patrons comfortable with reading ten books will receive the first level prize. Learn How to Create an Edible Fruit Arrangement Saturday, July 18 at 1 p.m. Chef Michael Niksic will create an edible fruit display. Using a multitude of fruits, the chef will turn them into a work of art.

Elements of Personal Safety and Self Defense for Women - Saturday, July 11 at 2 p.m. Former Chicago police officer Pat Collins will provide an interactive presentation that emphasizes awareness, avoidance, and verbal skills to avoid becoming a victim, along with a demonstration of self-defense tactics and use of personal protection devices such as pepper spray. Refreshments will be served.

Get into Golf - Tuesday, July 7 at 7 p.m. Get into golf with TopGolf’s PGA trained professional. Learn or improve your grip, stance, and putting skills plus general rules and etiquette of the game.

Author Visit - Wesley Adamczyk: Don’t Miss Your Chance to Meet this Local Author! Wednesday, July 8 at 7 p.m. Wesley Adamczyk will be at the Wood Dale Library to tell his incredible life story as written in his memoir: “When God Looked the Other Way: an Odyssey of War, Exile, and Redemption.” Come in and experience what life was like for a boy living in exile, wandering from country to country and surviving unimaginable conditions. After all of this, imagine how difficult it must have been for him to forgive his perpetrators and finally find peace. You will also get a chance to learn shocking historical facts that were hidden from the public for several decades. Refreshments will be served.

New Series of “Love and Forgiveness” Book Discussions Due to the “Love and Forgiveness” book discussion’s success and patron demand, the Wood Dale Library will host another scholar led book discussion series. The theme of “Love and Forgiveness” will continue and Dr. Linda Burke will be back to lead the discussions. New, as well as current discussion participants are warmly welcomed to attend, so come in and discover what all the buzz is about! The

readings for upcoming programs were chosen by participants of previous discussions in collaboration with the scholar. The titles and Tuesday evening dates are as follows:

1. August 11 at 7 p.m. – Selected stories: The Book of Jonah, The Sermon on the Mount, and Parable of the Prodigal Son

2. September 8 at 7 p.m. – Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte 3. October 13 at 7 p.m. - The Razor’s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham 4. November 10 at 7 p.m. - Atonement by Ian McEwan 5. December 8 at 7 p.m. – Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust

Bookventure Biography and Memoir - Tuesday, August 4 at 7 p.m. Join the Wood Dale Public Library on Tuesday, August 4 at 7 p.m. for the Bookventure Series and discover interesting biographies and memoirs written by people from around the world. Get to know people you admire, such as famous leaders, celebrities, sport champions, everyday heroes, and more. Experience what it is like to grow up in a different country, live through a variety of life obstacles, survive deadly illness, and much more. There will be surprise giveaways, and refreshments will be served.

Iran : From Ancient Persia to Modern Iran - Thursday, August 27 at 7 p.m. Iran has a long proud history that predates the seventh century Islamic invasion. Its ancient kings preceded the Greeks in promoting human rights and religious tolerance. Now Iran is an Islamic Shiite theocracy, a nation in turmoil. As we catch the pictures of Bill Helmuth's one thousand mile overland trip, Bill will give an eyewitness account of Iran’s realities.

Ice Cream Social With Suzette, Balloon Artist Thursday, August 13, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Celebrate the completion of the summer reading program and your reading accomplishments with Ice Cream from Uncle Harry’s Ice Cream shop. If that weren’t enough excitement, Suzette will be creating fantastic balloon characters for children who have met their summer reading program goals. Be sure to register for this program!!! Arrive early to sign up for your child’s time with Suzette. While you are waiting for your turn, socialize with other summer readers. Ice cream will be served starting at 7 p.m. Children can bring their favorite book to book talk with the microphone! We will have the prize cart available for those who want to turn in reading logs.

Around the World: Africa’s Great Game Preserves - Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. You are right there amidst the world's greatest and grandest land animals, the BIG FIVE: elephants, hippos, cape buffalo, leopards, and lions in their natural habitats. You are there as traveler Bill Helmuth personally takes you to the Serengeti Plains and Ngorngoro Crater deep in Tanzania, East Africa. See the remarkable supporting cast of zebras, giraffes, vultures, hyenas, and

swarms of pink flamingos. Meet the colorful Masai Warriors in their ancient thatched, mud- hut villages as they defy assimilation into the 21st Century. Since timing is everything, you have a ringside seat to see a live volcano the instant it erupts, shooting miles of black smoke and ash into the overhead sky. Families are welcome to attend.

“Love and Forgiveness” Book Discussion - Tuesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. Join the Wood Dale Public Library to discuss three biblical stories: The Book of Jonah, The Sermon on the Mount, and Parable of the Prodigal Son. These stories were chosen by participants of previous discussions in collaboration with the scholar as foundational to the concept of love and forgiveness in the western

tradition. The Sermon on the Mount gives us a closer look at the golden rules of the Christian doctrine. In Parable of the Prodigal Son and The Book of Jonah we meet two characters who ask for forgiveness and are given more than they hope for. Refreshments will be served.

Self Registration is now open! Get ready for this summer’s reading program “READ on the Wild Side” @ the Wood Dale Public Library. Materials to register are available on the tables in the youth department. Please register for individual programs online at www.wooddalelibrary.org. Readers will keep track of the time they spend reading by coloring in a box on their reading log for every 15 minutes that they read, are read to, or that they read to anyone else.

Many special programs are scheduled for summer readers and their families at the library. Thursday nights are Family Entertainment Nights at the library.

Click on the programs you are interested in and fill in the required information. Registration is limited for most of the programs, so be sure to reg-ister early! All of the summer reading programs are F-R-E-E for summer reading program participants and their families.

Wood Dale Public Library staff will be staffing the school library at Westview during summer school again this year. On Tuesday and Friday afternoons, programs featuring favorite books will be presented in the school library.

YOUTH SERVICES IN THE WOOD DALE PUBLIC LIBRARY

STORY TIMES The library storytellers use books, flannel board stories, finger plays, songs, movement and puppets to enhance reading and listening skills for young book lovers. Little Cubs is for babies 12—24 months and an accompanying adult.

Storytime Gone Wild is for children, aged 3-7 years. Occasionally crafts will be included in these programs. Nocturnal Storytime is for children aged 3-7 years.

Children are welcome to wear their pajamas and snuggly slippers, bring a favorite stuffed animal and even a blanket. Wild Toddler Time is for children 24-36 months and an accompanying adult. Migration Storytime is for children, aged 3-7 and will include more movement activities and games. Spanish and Polish programs are for children 3-7 years and are presented with limited English.

Plan to arrive early or stay after the

ONE DRUM: AROUND THE WORLD IN 50 MINUTES Thursday, July 23 6-8 p.m.

One Drum is an eclectic multi-cultural ensemble which performs songs, stories and dances rooted in the cultures of Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, the Middle East and the Americas. David Stocker will also lead participants in a drum circle, which is why this is a two-hour event!

RAPTORS 101 Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m. The Illinois Raptor Center will bring a hawk, owl, falcon, vulture and an eagle to the library. The Illinois Raptor center specializes in rescuing injured raptors and rehabilitating

them. If the birds cannot be released back into the wild, they can often be used to edu-cate the public about these amazing animals and the dangers they face in modern America.

DISC DOGS Thursday, August, 6 at 7 p.m.

I’ll bet you didn’t know that dogs

can fly. Prepare to be amazed at the Disc Dog’s amazing flights as they catch flying discs and perform awesome tricks here at the library.
