GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERNUNIVERSITY

Beginning this fall, GeorgiaSouthwestern State University willgive academic credit to non-tradi-tional students based on their priorlearning from work or other expe-riences. In fact, GSW was recentlyrecognized as an Adult LearningFocused Institution (ALFI).Charles Huffman, Ph.D., associ-

ate professor of psychology, is thedirector of Georgia Southwestern’snew Prior Learning AssessmentProgram (PLA). In the fall, he willlead this program’s inauguralcourse, PLA 2000.“Research shows that experi-

ence, when compared to direct

instruction, often produces superi-or learning,” Huffman said. “Manyadults are fearful about returningto school. Through the new PLA2000 course, non-traditional stu-dents will gain confidence in theirability to perform at the collegelevel, and may earn credit for theskills, knowledge, and abilitiesthey have learned outside the tra-ditional college classroom. It canshorten the time and costs to com-plete a college degree.”The ALFI Initiative was created

in 1999 by the Council on AdultExperiential Learning (CAEL) tohelp colleges and universitiesimprove learning opportunities foradults. The Coalition was devel-oped to aid in research and to

allow schools to learn from oneanother. To qualify as an ALFI Coalition

member, institutions must offerdegree programs to adults, beaccredited by regional accreditingagencies, be a current institutionalmember of CAEL, and have admin-istered the ALFI tools within thepast three years.Georgia Southwestern began

developing its Prior LearningAssessment Program in 2009 afterreceiving a $25,000 College AccessGrant from the University Systemof Georgia. Southwestern is one offour schools within the System thatcomprises the Adult LearningConsortium. Faculty members ChuChu Wu, Tom Wheeler, Leisa
