August 1994 Additives .for Poiymers

In view of the current interest in non-halogen flame retardant systems, these compounds merit further evaluation, alone and in combination with other flame retardant components.

Combinations of the melamine phosphates with other flame retardants, even such closely related compounds as ammonium polyphosphates or other melamine salts, may be advantageous. Synergism may sometimes be encountered, though it is poorly understood and difficult to predict.

This overview approaches the subject of melamine phosphates and pyrophosphates from both empirical and theoretical viewpoints. (57 refs). Plastics Compounding, 1994, (May/June), 31-39

Influence of minerat fillers on stabilizer consumption in rubbers

This work studied the influence of mineral impurities of monocrystalline graphite on the consumption of industrial stabilizer naphtham- 2 (N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine) in rubbers.

As a result of the investigations, it was established that replacement of some of the carbon black with finely cornminuted monocrystalline graphite ore or other mineral fillers of lamellar structure makes it possible to reduce substantially the unproductive consumption of antioxidants in the preparation of rubber mixes, and consequently to increase the durability of rubber goods.

The data obtained are consistent with existing PIas rubber and plastics show, 29 August-2 concepts concerning the key in~uence of the September 1995, Taipeii, Taiwan. activity and content of fillers on the Contact: Taiwan Products Pro~tion (UK)). consumption of stabilizers in rubbers. Seminar on polymer modifiers

Polymer modifiers for improved performance of asphalt mixtures is the title of a 3-day seminar to be held 23-25 November 1994 at the Base1 Hilton Hotel, Basel, Switzerland. Key topics to be discussed include: chemistry of polymer modi~ers, chemical test methods, asphalt properties, blending recycled plastics with asphalts, reducing stress and deformation, SHRP test and specifications, rheology and viscoelastic behaviours, life cycle cost analysis, and optimizing performance through selection of proper modifiers.
