The LIA, my co-chairs, all the committee members and I are looking forward to see you at the 34th International

Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®) in Atlanta, the most important laser material processing

conference in the world. While Atlanta is more known for Coca Cola and as the birthplace of Martin Luther King, the

southern United States have evolved into the center of international car manufacturers, with Mercedes-Benz USA

headquarters moving to Atlanta in 2017.

With over 200 presentations and posters on the latest in laser research, strengthened by the peer review process

introduced last year, ICALEO will provide another outstanding opportunity to learn about advances in laser material

processing. As every year, it will also be an outstanding way to network with scientists, engineers and researchers from

all over the world, to meet old friends and to make new friends.

Added to the program this year is a focus on lasers used in biomedical and life science applications. I hope that it will

not just expand your horizons, but I’m certain that there will be ideas that come out of looking just at what’s on your

plate every day.

I am looking forward to seeing y’all in the beautiful South, and hope that we will all have the best ICALEO yet.

Student Paper Award Contest

Future generations of laser industry experts have been

contributing papers at ICALEO for 16 years. LIA once again will

recognize the importance of student contributions with the

17th Annual ICALEO Student Paper Award. Not only does the

student paper contest illuminate the great work of up-and-

coming researchers, but cash awards will be presented to the

first-, second- and third-place winners. Winning papers may be

submitted to LIA's Journal of Laser Applications® for publication

(papers will undergo a peer-review process). Student papers

accepted for competition will be judged by an international

panel based on originality of topic/material presented, scientific

and technical merit and presentation quality. Professors will

not judge their own students’ papers. Prize winners will be

announced during the Closing Plenary Session of ICALEO on

One of LIA’s most prestigious honors, the Arthur L. Schawlow

Award recognizes the recipient’s longstanding record of laser-

industry innovation. The Schawlow honoree is acknowledged

at the traditional LIA awards luncheon, during which the recipient

gives an address that is always a memorable, must-see ICALEO®

moment.

More specifically, the Schawlow Award recognizes outstanding,

career-long contributions to basic and applied research in laser

science and engineering leading to fundamental understanding

of laser materials interaction and/or transfer of laser technology

for increased application in industry, medicine and daily life.

Areas of contribution include:

• Laser spectroscopy and its application in materials processing

and diagnostics

• Laser-aided materials processing

• Laser interaction with biological tissues

• Development of new lasers

Past recipients have included Reinhart Poprawe (2014),

managing director of Fraunhofer ILT and LIA president for

2012, and Ursula Keller (2013), inventor of the semiconductor

saturable absorber mirror, or SESAM. For her pioneering work in

ultrafast laser research, Keller became the first female recipient

To close out ICALEO, we offer you a plenary session that will

hopefully broaden your horizon a bit and give you something

to think about on your way home. Two of the talks will touch

on lasers that may impact your work in years to come, one at

a wavelength that we have not had as an industrial laser, one

a new type of diode lasers that may revolutionize our world

just like broad area diode lasers did in the last 20 years. We

will then hear about lasers that aren’t built to cut or weld

or microstructure, but that are built for other applications,

applications that help us see the world differently. We hope to

see you there, for an exciting session.

LASER MATERIALS PROCESSING CONFERENCE

Industrial uses of lasers are ever expanding, powered by robust

research activity. Every year, ICALEO®’s Laser Material Processing

(LMP) conference showcases the best research and development

results worldwide. Over the years it has matured as a vibrant forum for new ideas, collaboration

and education. This year, we can all look forward to presentations that expand the boundaries

of laser processing with more powerful lasers, innovative hybrid processes, and laser applications

that push the boundaries of what has been done and what can be done. Welding takes up a large

share of the conference followed by surface modification including cladding and coating. 3D printing or laser

assisted machining is strongly represented, as are traditional, well established processes like cutting and drilling. Rounding out the

conference are contributions simulating all these processes, to strengthen and support the results of more experimental papers.

LMP contributors are coming from 39 countries and 6 continents, many of those peer reviewed – a new feature raising the quality

of ICALEO further.
