ADVANCED FIBRE OPTIC NETWORK FOR AUTOMATED TRENCHING

BORDERS RAILWAY, BORDERS, SCOTLAND

When Network Rail Scotland needed an innovative solution to installing and providing the signalling and communication network for the new Borders Railway line, they chose local company Emtelle to provide ground breaking fibre and connectivity solutions.

Project Background

The Borders Railway connects Edinburgh Waverly train station

with Galashiels and Tweedbank – partly following the old Waverly

Route that used to run between Edinburgh and Carlisle.

Building work on the line, which restores rail services to the area

after a near 5-decade hiatus, began in 2012 after being given the

go ahead in 2008.

The project had building costs of £294 million, and is the longest

domestic railway to be built in Britain in over 100 years.

Demanding and Challenging

Emtelle worked closely with Network Rail Scotland to design and deliver an innovative fibre optic

network for the line, which is expected to carry almost 650,000 passengers annually and represent

£33m of benefits for the local economy. Emtelle, renowned globally for their industry shaping

products and solutions, is immensely proud to have been involved with such a historic project so

close to home.

“At Emtelle we are delighted to have been chosen for this prestigious local project, which included all

elements of Emtelle supply including fibre cables, multitube assemblies and associated connectivity.

Normally, our projects are worldwide, but it is great to see the products used in the local area. We are

excited about the new train line and the opportunities it will bring to the area.”

Simon Wade, Sales Manager FTTx / Rail Emtelle UK & Ireland

Emtelle designed and delivered a highly innovative fibre optic network for deployment trackside that

had been specially adapted to make use of automated trenching technologies. The end result is a

flexible, upgradeable and cost effective system that will serve passengers of the Borders Railway for

decades to come.
