ADVANCED MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Time : Three hours Full Marks : 100
Answer any fivequestions taking at least twofrom any group.
Assume suitable data if necessary.
GROUP A
1. a) What are the different types of sampling plans? Explain
them.
b) What is OC curve? Explain its use in inspection indicating
the salient features on it.
c) Give necessary block diagrams of three inspection
alternatives. Label the diagrams.
d) An inspector has inspected a batch of 100 parts, reporting a
total of 12 defective parts in the batch. On careful re-
examination, it was found that four of these reported defects
were in fact good pieces, whereas a total of six defective
units in the batch were undetected by the inspector. What is
the inspectors accuracy in this instance? 5+5+5+5
2. a) State and explain about the different types of contact probe
configurations in CMM. Give necessary sketches. With an
example, explain how is the compensation for probe tip
made.

b) Sketch to show the gantry type and cantilever type
mechanical structure of CMM.
c) The coordinates at the two ends of a certain length
dimension of a mechanical component have been measured
by a CMM. The coordinates of the first end are (2347,
4811, 025) and those of the opposite end are (7352, 2170,
6038). All dimensions are in mm. The given coordinates
have been corrected for probe tip radius. Determine the
length dimension that would be computed by the CMM
software. 6+4+10
3. a) What is meant by machine vision? With the help of a sketch
the basic functions of a machine vision system.
b) A video camera has 512512 pixel matrix. Each pixel must
be converted from an analog signal to the corresponding
digital signal by an ADC. The analog-to-digital conversion
process takes 01s to complete, including the time to move
between pixels. How long will it take to collect the image
data from one frame, and is this time compatible with
processing a t the rate of 30 frames per second?
c) With necessary sketches, explain scanning laser device and
linear array device for measurement purpose. 7+4+9
4. a) With the help of necessary sketches explain the basic
principle of the generative manufacturing processes. With
an example show the necessary steps involved in rapid
prototyping.
b) What is selective laser sintering process? Discuss the
process with il lustrative sketch(es) . 5+5+10

5. Write down at least two manufacturing techniques with process
parameters of making metal matrix composites in detail. 20
6. a) What are the parameters used to design the organic
structures of plastics? What are the factors affecting the
properties of polymer? Discuss briefly.
b) What is casting of plastics? Discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of this process. (4+8)+(2+6)
7. a) What are the basic principles for the design of plastic
components? Discuss in detail.
b) What are the types of cutting tools used for machining of
plastics? Which types of machining are recommended for
precision machine of plastics? Discuss in detail. 10+10
8. What are the ceramic materials used in Bio-medicals? What are
the advantages of such materials in Bio-medical field?

Name the different types of ceramic materials and its industrial
application in detail. 20
