NAME: A2 Media Studies – Self Evaluation task
In preparation for the assessment of the practical, I would like you to complete a very structured self-evaluation exercise. There are two main benefits of this:
1) By interrogating the mark scheme properly, you can identify the weaknesses in your blogs and can therefore rectify issues before the deadline of next Wednesday.
2) The examiner will want evidence of what YOU have done for research/planning, construction and evaluation. By noting this down in a structured way, it gives me the evidence to share with the examiner.
Please fill in the information on the next sheet. You will need to provide some evidence in the form of referencing particular blog posts.
After completing the assessment, fill in the final data table below.

Research into similar products and a potential target audience
19 I carried out all of my own research.
However we did put out our survey to audiences as a group.
Work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding
20 Rory wrote up the character profiles for the 3 main male characters (Ross, Jordon and Alex).
Alice wrote up the character profiles for the two female characters (Lila and Stacey)
As a group we distributed roles in order to produce our animatic; therefore I had the role of producing the script, written storyboard, full plot, titles and soundscape. Whereas Alice also had the role of producing the script and titles with me. Rory and Josh produced the drawn storyboard and Josh then put the animatic together in Premiere.
The rest of the planning I produced myself.
Organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props
2 Alice produced the production management form which organized all of our actors and locations.

I produced the props list which organized the costumes and props.
Time management
Skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the presentation
22 I used the following skills:
Incorporation of photos
Slideshare
Prezi
Youtube
Premiere skills
After Effects skills
Word documents
Log sheets
Communication skills 1 We all communicated via Facebook and iMessage.
Care in the presentation of the research and planning

Trailer: Shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot sizes and close attention to mise en scene
1 I had the role of camera man several times in our trailer:
I filmed the majority of shots with Ross and James (father and son).
I filmed the shot of Ross talking to his chief police officer.
I assisted in the filming of Jordon outside receiving money for a drug exchange (directed the cinematography).
I filmed all of the shots with Ross getting into his car, talking to Alex and then driving off.
I filmed all of the shots of the Femme Fetale.
I filmed the shots of the drug group together.
I filmed the shots with the red lighting when Max has been stabbed.
I filmed the shots of Alex in his office and then the shots of him getting into his car and driving off.
I filmed the shadow shot
I filmed the phone shot (where Ross is looking at a photo of his son, James.
![Page 6: Advanced portfolio in media self evaluation](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082908/5871b3c11a28abda6a8b71df/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
I also filmed the ending shots of Lila and Ross.
Trailer: Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions, captions and other effects
1 As a group we all individualy put our own version of the opening together and then drew in ideas from all.
Josh then went on to put the rest of the trailer in order with our input, whilst I worked on the titles in Aftereffects.
Once Josh had put all the shots in order I went over an fine-tuned everything:
I made shots shorter, I broke up shots (E.g. I used the two different angles of when Ross and his chief are talking and when Ross is talking to Lila.), I also added in the titles. I also added in the post production recordings of the chief, Ross and Stacey and matched the audio up with the images.
After feedback from our first draft, I then looked at the shot order again and changed it around and deleted some clips and put in new ones to make the narrative clearer.
I then changed the wording from ‘calculating’ to ‘cryptic’ on the ‘George Falls’ title.
I also layered the sound for when Lila is talking to Ross.
Trailer: Recording and editing sound with images appropriately
1 We recorded the dialogue of Alex speaking to Ross and in his office with a Rode mic. We then went on to use a music studio with a microphone and Logic to record other

dialogue to make it sound more professional.
I layered all of the different music and created the sound bridges for the soundcape.
I also added in the sound effects.
I also matched up audio (post) with the images.
Poster: Awareness of conventions of layout and page design, fonts
1 I researched into poster conventions and then decided on what ones we should ignore and use. After a groups discussion and using ideas that we all created, Alice and I went on to produce the final piece. We decided on having the femme fetale as the focal image and later on configured having Ross and James in the poster. We also understood that the title had to be large and thought it would be most prominent in the centre of the poster. We used fonts that looked the most professional and fitted in with out genre.
Poster: Accurate use of language and register
1 I thought of the tag line ‘Can deception be the way to truth?’ as I thought it captured the essence of noir and the issues in our film.
Poster: Manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing.
1 During our final draft, after a group discussion, Alice and I layered in the other images of Ross and James and adjusted the size and opacity to be in proportion with the rest of the poster.
We also layered and blended the smoke effect.
![Page 8: Advanced portfolio in media self evaluation](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022082908/5871b3c11a28abda6a8b71df/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
We blended the whole poster so that the focal image blended into the background but her hand and cigarette were prominent.
Poster: set; selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
1 We selected the mise-en scene of a cigarette as that represented the noir genre as it is a known convention. We also selected the mise-en scene of the costumes and make up to represent the femme fetale. Moreover we decided on the prop of the gun to further emphasize the action in the film and the issues of violence.
In terms of color we decided on the contrast of black and white as again this created a link with our other two texts and represented the noir convention.
We placed the setting in an Urban city as this represented where the film was set and also the noir convention.
Front Cover: Awareness of conventions of layout and page design, fonts
1 I researched into magazine conventions and analyzed existing ones. I also then planned and drafted a version of the magazine incorporating those conventions.
Rory and Josh then went on to edit with us all experimenting with ideas of the layout and fonts.
Front Cover: Accurate use of language and register

Front Cover: Manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing.
1 We were all there to take photographs of our acting director and we each took a turn at taking the photo from different angles and lighting. We then came back and

looked at each photo and chose the final one based on its framing, lighting and the way it captured the smoke.
We each experimented with how large the image should be and the colouring of it – Rory and Josh created the final version.
Front Cover: set; selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
1 We all decided on including the mise-en scene of a cigarette to create that link between all three texts but also represent the convention of Noir. I thought that it would be an appropriate idea to have our acting director in a shirt and tie to represent the gender of male control/power/success but then juxtapose this. Moreover we all agreed on the colouring to emphasize the connection to the other texts but also it represented the contrast between light and dark and added an atmospheric mood to the front cover. We kept the setting simplistic as this is a convention of Sight and Sound.
