ATS receives Eaton Premier Supplier Award again!

Jeff Owens, President of ATS

Global manufacturer Eaton recently

rewarded an elite group of 43 of its

suppliers with the company’s prestigious

Premier Supplier Award. Eaton contracts

over 40,000 suppliers worldwide so

this recognition is high praise for those

receiving it. Amongst this select group of

companies were Advanced Technology

Services (ATS) which supplies Eaton with

outsourced production maintenance

industrial parts service and innovative IT

solutions. ATS were amongst the award

winners in the indirect materials and

services category.

This is the eighth year that Eaton has

recognised a select group of its global

suppliers with this award.

“It is an honour to recognise such

a significant group of suppliers for

their commitment to excellence and

service. The Premier Supplier awards

are reserved for Eaton’s best suppliers

across the enterprise,” said Pavan

Pattada, Eaton Senior Vice President,

Supply Chain Management.

“We appreciate each of our suppliers

for their efforts in establishing Eaton as

a leading global power management

company and look forward to their

continuing contributions.”

The award winners fell within one of two

supplier categories: Direct or Indirect

Materials and Services. Direct Materials

suppliers are those which provide goods

used directly in the making of products

(e.g. steel, bearings, seals, castings);

Indirect Materials and Services suppliers

provide goods or services to support plant

production and maintenance or office

services (e.g. cutting fluid, maintenance

repair, office supplies, travel services).

“Out of the thousands of

Eaton suppliers, it is truly a great

honour to be recognised as a

member of this very elite group

of suppliers.”

“ Earning the Premier Supplier

Award for the fourth time, is proof

of our unwavering commitment to

provide Eaton with the highest level

of service possible.”

Jeff Owens, President of ATS.

Stefan Korn – Supply Cable

Congratulations to Stefan Korn –

Technician at Eaton Havant. He noticed a

supply cable on a Burr Bench in 4V3 was

too long and had been placed in a narrow

and restricting arrangement inside a uni-

strut. It was also damaged in several areas

due to cable bends and sharp edges of

the uni-strut. The appliance was PAT tested;

but upon further investigation the 13A fuse

was overrated for the cable size, which

could have caused a fire on an overload

condition. Rectifying this, Stefan cut the

cable to length, removed the damaged

parts, and replaced the insufficient 3A fuse.

Stefan for dentified the problem using a 5S

approach, and using a mini-RCA to rectify

the problem.

Ross Tolliday – Turmat Machine

Congratulations to Ross Tolliday – Planner

Scheduler at Eaton Havant. Ross noticed

a contractor entering the ‘cage’ part of

the Turmat machine that holds the robot

without removing the key from the door.

There is a potential for someone to close

the door and start the machine with the

contractor still inside the cage. The robot

could then move and strike the individual.

Ross spoke to a senior Engineer at Eaton

and it was decided the best course of

action was to place a padlock through

the door when entering the cage and

LOTO it. The machine could no longer

start unexpectedly. An excellent review

of contractor activity and identifying real

danger. Well done Ross!

Critical findsFaulty tap box Eaton Havant

Whilst in the workshop, Julian Burrows

– Technician at Havant noticed a

distinct burning smell. In order to find the

root cause of the smell, Julian quickly

investigated using the Thermal camera.

He discovered that the source was a

faulty tap box in the overhead bus bar –

measuring at a temperature of around

60ºC at its hottest point. Julian quickly

rectified the problem and eliminated the

risk of a potential fire within the workshop.

Well done Julian.

Panel Board Transporters Reddings Lane

It was reported at Reddings Lane that

the brakes on many of the panel board

transporters did not work. With the brakes

not working, users would become at risk

when moving them, causing a Health

& Safety risk. An ATS job request was

submitted, and as the transporters became

available Steve Sale – Technician at

Eaton Reddings Lane moved them to ATS

department for Repair. In order to maintain

this work, each trolley has been given an ID

number so a register of repairs can be kept.

Great work Steve.

Significant cost savings from Proactive Maintenance

The Hobhead in the Hurth machine at

Caterpillar Wolverhampton, was failing due

to the bearings , shafts, and seals being

badly worn inside, requiring reconditioning.

The timescale for the removal, strip down,

repair/re-conditioning, external machining,

re-build and re-installment of the Hobhead

would be up to 7 weeks. In order to prevent

this downtime, Kevin Barrow – Technician

at Wolverhampton salvaged an old hob

head from the Red Tag area at Caterpillar,

and reconditioned it between his work

orders. The head was then fitted to the

machine during planned downtime. Kevin

demonstrated leadership, and eliminated

two weeks’ worth of downtime through the

work he carried out.

Beach Point Capital management Beach Point Capital is an existing ATS

customer in the USA based in Santa

Monica, California they’re business is

responsible for financial investments in

credit markets.

They operate offices within LA, NYC and

now a fully refurbished and relocated

office in Mayfair London.

Our UK involvement was established by

extending the relationship from the US

through Beth Bromley who has been the

account manager for BPC.

Over the past month Mark Deveney

and Billy Whiting have been working to

setup and relocate Beach Point’s current

equipment and team to their new offices.

This involved the procurement, installation

and setup of printers, routers, servers and

firewalls into the London office.

Jez Whitehouse delights Caterpillar Wolverhampton

Jez Whitehouse delighted our Customer

at Caterpillar Wolverhampton this month

through the design, manufacture, and

installation of a new safety barrier. The

wood crusher located in the yard of

building 2 had been reported as a hazard

due to the overspill of wood out onto the

pedestrian walkway, putting any passers-

by at risk of injury. In order to eliminate

this risk, Caterpillar required a protective

barrier to be installed by ATS as soon

as possible. It took a total of one week

from design to installation to complete

the desired solution, all of which Jez was

able to do using his own initiative, whilst

ensuring the voice of the customer was

fully captured. The customer is extremely

satisfied with the results and the cost

saving delivered by ATS. An excellent

suggestion for resolution.

Before After

All scheduled and coordinated with ATS’

infrastructure team based in the US.

By working this way ATS were able to

deliver Beach Point a flexible solution to

meet the install goals, and utilise the remote/

distributed/online team to achieve a more

cost effective and responsive solution.

ATS were also able to help when Beach

Point were let down by a not to be named

well known telecoms provider in the UK (with

a 2 letter acronym) by fulfilling the equipment

order and present a one-stop-solution.

The solution implemented utilises

Enterprise Watch to monitor the health

and performance of all onsite critical IT

equipment. In the event of equipment or

service downtime, an alert is generated

and immediately escalated to ATS’ Service

Desk. The incident is routed to the correct

team who diagnose and remedy the

situation online, providing the end user with

the most cost effective resource utilisation,

the right skill set at the right time delivered

the most cost effective way.

Ross Tolliday – Planner Scheduler at Eaton

Havant, led a 3 day joint collaboration kaizen

event between ATS and our customer Eaton,

to review and update the criticality of all

machines on site. Criticality ratings had not

been reviewed since the start up process in

February 2012, and many assets have since

been moved, been installed or were simply

redundant. The team used the 3 days to

rate the machines based on their Capacity,

Uniqueness, Utilisation, Maintenance

criticality, and Complexity of repair, in order

to generate a total Priority rating between

1 – 4 (1 – Critical, 2 – Important, 3 – Required,

and 4 – Routine). These ratings now allow

breakdowns to be prioritised accordingly

and risks to the business to be minimised.

Eaton are delighted with the results of this

event, and intend to use the new Criticality

list to develop contingencies plans for the

future. This event has also been used as a

benchmark model for other ATS sites, most

notably, Eaton Brierley Hill, and we plan to roll

this out on to all sites by the end of 2013.

Innovation in Action

This year our teams across

the UK have been seeking

inspiration for continuous

improvement by visiting the

UK’s best manufacturing sites.

In September and October,

ATS team members visited

Nissan Motor Manufacturing,

Happy and Mars Drinks.

Each of these visits stimulates

innovation by providing new

and fresh approaches to our

key business challenges.

13

Nissan

Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK has been the UK’s biggest

car manufacturer for the past 14 years, and the UK’s

biggest car exporter. The Sunderland factory has been

operational since 1986 and currently employs around

5,800 people. The visit covered Nissan’s approach to

Lean and continuous improvement, visual management

and strategy deployment. The visit was attended by Emily

Matthews and Andy Cartwright.

Happy

Happy is a multi-award winning computer training

company based in London which has been voted one

of the best companyies to work for in the UK. The core

principle at Happy is that people work best when they

feel good about themselves. The visit covered how Happy

creates a great place to work. The visit was attended by

Gemma Turner.

Mars Drinks

Part of the global Mars Group of companies the

Mars Drink division manufactures the drinks machines Klix

and Flavia. At their site in Basingstoke this award-winning

company makes over 1 billion drinks a year. The visit to

Mars Drinks covered how the company has implemented

and sustained lean techniques across the organisaiton

and how they create great teams through using the

Mission Directed Work Team approach. The visit was

attended by Andy Plant and Emily Matthews.

The Employee Engagement Survey that ATS

completed in July 2013 identified that the

way UK employees felt about our Brand was

something that ATS UK needs to work on.

One of our lowest rating responses across

the whole survey was “ ATS has an excellent

reputation among the community”

We have addressed this by creating a CSR

(Corporate and Social Responsibility) plan.

One of the key elements of this is supporting

local and national charities enabling us to

give something back as a team.

On the 25th October 2013 ATS employees

got involved in the first charity event - raising

money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in

the UK, with Around 55,000 people diagnosed

each year. Of these about 400 are men.

Earlier detection and better treatments mean

that survival rates after a diagnosis of breast

cancer are improving and now more than

8 out of 10 people survive breast cancer

beyond five years. The results show that early

diagnosis saves lives.

On the 25th October, ATS employees

and customers wore pink t-shirts to show

their support raising £1671 for the charity.

Congratulations and thanks go out to all

those involved.

Demonstrate leadership

ATS goes Pink and raises £1675

A 2 day 5S event was held at Eaton

Titchfield in week 39, to improve the

productivity, quality, and safety of the

calibration stores area. Obsolete items

were removed from the area and

standards were implemented to ensure

sustainability. The over-all 5S score

improved in all areas by 90%, and plans

were made to further improve this score.

The 2 days were also used to develop, in

conjunction with the customer, a Gauge

Management Process. The Process

encompasses a 6 month plan that will be

used to remove waste from the current

calibration process, drive continuous

improvement activities, and reduce

monthly outsourcings costs. Five phases

have been planned with a final reflection

to be held in February 2014. Well done to

all involved.

Andy Plant delivers significant cost savings for Caterpillar WolverhamptonAndy Plant – Supply Chain Specialist at

Wolverhampton eliminated potential

downtime which would have been caused

due to a motor issue on the wash and

paint burners. A gas leak was reported,

and an external heating company was

called in to identify the faults. It was found

the main problem with the machine was

the fan motor burning out. The heating

engineers removed the motor and took it

away with a view to getting it sent

for repair several days later. To avoid

downtime, Andy contacted a different

supplier and arranged for the motor to be

collected from the Heating Engineers, and

have the work done over the weekend

ready for production on Monday morning.

Andy’s commitment and dedication to

getting this work done, saved our customer

Caterpillar a significant sum.
