Everyday driving, especially in the city with frequent stops, puts a considerable strain on a Start-Stop battery. In fact, it’s not uncommon to start and stop four times every kilometre. This means that the battery must cycle on and off constantly, and often needs to start the vehicle with only a partial charge. A Start-Stop battery will often use energy from the alternator or regenerative braking to quickly restore energy.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES For tHe WorKsHoP

There’s a lot more to replacing a Start-Stop battery than simply removing the old one and installing a new one. Connected to the on-board electronics by a battery management system (BMS) or intelligent battery sensor (IBS), the battery is the heart of the Start-Stop system and key to maximising the environmental benefits.

In order to maintain comfort and keep con-sumption down, many vehicle manufactur-ers link the installation of a new battery in a Start-Stop vehicle to a memory reset. To do so, it’s vital to have the right diagnostic tool.

But that’s not all. Selecting the right battery and the various installation processes (see photo) present further challenges. So it’s es-sential to have up-to-the-minute installation instructions to prevent damage to the vehi-cle’s electronics or mechanical components and to ensure quick, reliable starts.

So how many independent workshops are properly equipped to replace Start-Stop batteries? We asked 1,200 top European workshops if they felt ready. And because almost 60 % said ‘no’, we developed a unique service program to support both workshops and wholesalers.
